View Full Version : Radeon 9700 pro display error with wierd rectangles

I recently upgrades my brand new computer to a Radeon 9700 pro, and the card works fine in windows and elsewhere. The only place it messes up is when I am in Dawn of War in the opening menu, or in game. It dispays a random set of rectangles (kinda looking like a checker board)or some kind of prism. It looks like the mess up is a "layer - so to speak" on top of the real thing because in between the checker boxes it displays fine...

I know this may be cofusing because i don't have any idea what to call it... but i am sure someone else has the problem and will understand how to help me fix it.

Oh and yes i did install new drivers for the card and Direct X 9.0c

One more thing, sometimes the game works perfectly... usually the glitch occurs after a cold start of my machine or after the machine is on for a long time. This shouldn't help though, because the former would seem to be a power issue, and the latter being a possible overheating issue.

I wish i could be more help, but maybe you can be more helpful.

Thanks, yourself

Can you post a pic? It might be over heating.

And make sure that you have the additional power cable attached and the fan is running.

Also, post a dxdiag.txt and a warnings.log please.
Spammer: If you could use the "edit" button instead of double-posting, that'd be great, it reduces clutter in the threads. Thanks.

Yeah, sorry about the double thread... I couldn't find the first thread and so i thought i had forgotten to push "submit".

The power to the fan is also plugged in. And just now when i turned on my computer the problem was there, but then in about 3 minutes it dissapeared. The only reason i want to fix this problem is that yesterday the problem CAME BACK after playing for a couple of hours.

Here is the dxdiag post, and i don't know how to get a warnings.log :

Here is a pic... at the moment my computer is working fine... it booted up and i had the problem for about 5-10 minutes, then everything worked out just fine, so here is the screen shot.

Oh yeah, and one more thing, i don't know jack about video cards and how they work (such as anisotrophic filtering or Z buffer depth), but i did fiddle around with this thing called Full Scene Anti-Aliasing, just changing stuff under display properties... and the size of these rectangles changed. On 6xT3 (whatever that means) the rectanges were much smaller and only on the guy in the pic... wonder what that means... hahahah.

Here is the link:
http://trip.home.texas.net/images/untitled2.GIF

For some reason you have to capitalize all of the ".GIF" or it won't work, thanks for caring.

Update your drivers for the video card and your Direct x drivers.
Go to windows update, scan for updates and download them.

What your seeing is graphical glitches either due to the refresh rate being too high (probably not) or your Direct X or Video card drivers not too happy.

I have my video drivers updated with the latest Catalyst 4.10, and I have direct x 9.0c, also the latest version. No solution.

And i'll say it again, what i don't understand is that the card works fine 90% of the time, but it always glitches the first 5 minutes after a cold start, and then every now and then it flickers with glitches, none lasting more than a few seconds. If there was some pattern that would be cool, other than that i guess i have to live with it.

Maybe its your power supply. Things that are strange at one moment and normal to the next often lead back to your old psu. Can you tell us anything about yours? If the problem happens after a "cold start" maybe there is some low voltage going on...

It might not hurt to try power cycling your psu anyway. Shut down, after about 30 seconds to a minute unplug the power (and other cables for the sake of it) from the pc. wait about 10 seconds or something, plug it in again, wait 10 secs again, unplug, wait, plug everything back in, double check and whatever and power up. Likely nothing will have changed, but its pretty painless to try anyway. Its possible sometimes if a psu is plugged in for a long time that something unknown-to-me but bad happens in its innards, and power cycling in such a way refreshes it properly.

Esper, i will try that tonight when i get home...

And one more question, why does everything else work just fine, like microsoft office, movies, webpages?

apallohadas
10th Nov 04, 11:43 AM
Because games tend to stress all parts of your computer much more than the rest of those applications. Office isn't very intense unless you're working several large spreedsheets linked to databases, Movie just test your graphic's card a tad bit, not even very much still, and webpages are next to nothing unless it's loaded with flash nonsense.

Make sure your card is pushed in all the way and the monitor cable is attached good. Sounds stupid I know, but worth a try.

Here are my settings on mine. You can change these settings in the Catalyst control center. I am using version 4.10. Some of these problably don't matter but it might be a good place to start.

can't seem to find those options, currently i have the omega drivers installed (catalyst 4.10 didn't fix anything) but i will try the catalyst with those settings and let you know.
For the first time ever, i just turned on my computer after a cold start and there was no problem, so i will wait until i have the problem again... what is wierd is i did nothing to fix it.
Thanks guys, yourself
