This is probably what you guys are experiencing, it's a known issue and the workaround is complicated:

I'm certain this is not my problem. I do manage to connect, but only once out of three times and only with one person...
Any other ideas?

Not really, there's a NAT bug with direct connections. Relic is working on it but didn't get it done in time for the 1.2 patch, so we're hoping it will be adressed in the next one.

My problem is that when I set up direct connect, I am player 1, someone connects as player 2 and no one else can connect after that point.

There are times when three external people try to connect, one of the three will connect and not allow the other two. If the person who connected drops out, the other two people will connect! Unfortunately the person who dropped out cannot reconnect. :boohoo:

My internet IP address is lower than my LAN IP address.

Yep, that's the bug. Sorry, not a whole lot you can do but wait for 1.3...

Thanks Moe.

Does anyone else here find it ironic that GameSpy who helped the DOW team with it's network code, has had these issues?

Isn't this what Gamespy is supposed to be good at?

How many games have internal GAMESPY game browsers built in?

What could possibly be different from this one?

Seriously I know I am venting here, but I belong to a large gaming group and many of us love the game---but when it comes to recommending it, all of us give the mutiplayer low marks when speaking to our other members and we are upset.

So please...fix the damn code regardless of the measures that need to be taken. It's killing your game's success.

Gamespy online is no great alternative as well. It's way to lagged and most of the time someone drops in the middle of the game.

Here is another thing. Please allow us to run a stand-alone server---I don't care if I have to buy another copy to do it.

Thank you.

Signed,
A loyal but upset customer
