View Full Version : painting and beer

On the weekends I have 3 hobbies. Since it's hard to find time for them all individually I just combine them all at once. They are painting models, smoking cigarettes, and drinking.
The first 2 don't really conflict with each other too much. But throw in the 3rd and things can get interesting. I can paint with some proficiency until about beer #7. 9 at the most but that's eliminating any fine detail work. I won't be scribing any purity seals after six cold ones in other words. As far as hand painting chapter badges goes, I better get that done by beer #3. Of course that all depends on how fast I toss em back and wether or not I had anything to eat before hand. I can still base coat by beer #11 tops but thats about it. Anyone else here drink and paint at the same time?

on the rare occasions that i drink, ive been known to paint when everyone else is asleep (insomnia, its a bitch). im good to paint anything other than fine detial/highlights up to about shot #8, anything apst 12 shots and i might as well just put away the paints...... and yes, im a big guy. i think beer kinda tastes lik ass strained through a dirty sweatsock, ill stick with hard alchohol, but then i only drink 2 maybe 3 times a year, so its not as much an issue :bandit:

Yes, whatever you do, dont do half a bottle of vodka before painting... Kind of funny realising you've just painted your Dark Angels totally boltgun metal..
Err.. Not that I would do that of course..;)
Either way, i dont make a habbit of drinking anyway, just when theres occasion.

I can't drink and paint; my fine motor control goes after a couple of pints. Besides, it would mean drinking on my own, and that's never a good idea.

I don't drink and paint. I find that painting is helpful at relieving stress and so is beer, but together they counteract each other. I end up getting frustrated or discouraged. If I feel the need to rush any of my painting, I stop. In the long run I end up appreciating my work more.
On a side note, I do love my Guinness.

I'd love to drink while painting but I'm legally underage by three years. :(
(This is assuming that the legal age for the purchase of alcohol is 18.)

You can drink at any age. You just can't buy alcohol before 18, at least in the UK.

Ehh, my parents would throw a fit anyway if I had a few beers at any time that isn't an evening meal.

Time heals all wounds, especially those that relate to being denied beer. ;)

I sometimes drink 'n paint....... just don't go over the top. A can of Carling whilst highlighting my Dark Angels, a shot of vodka whilst spraying my tanks, lol. I only drink lager.... well except last monday when there was that party......
Anyway, not mentioning anymore as I am only 15 so saying anything about drinking out and about could get people in trouble.......

I don't know where you live, Ionfish, but here in Florida it is quite illegal to be in possession of any alochol if under the age of 21. You can be arrested if the officer saw you holding it, or if you get caught near a cup that has "alcohol residue" in it. Or if you have it on your breath. Doesn't matter where you are either, even in your own home.
Being a student at the fine university of Florida State, I happen to drink quite a bit, and I don't let painting get in the way! Normally, I have pretty shaky hands, and I find that having a drink or two is perfect for calming my nerves down a bit. Painting itself is a great stress-reliever in itself, too.
Not that I'm advocating underage drinking or anything... oops...

Yes.. It seems alot of Uni students are heavy drinkers indeed.. Including in Australia.
I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so drinking and painting just doesnt work for me really, so i try to keep away from combining the two. *Try*.

Svedish: clearly, I live in a more civilised country than you... ;)
Here in the UK, one can drink at whatever age in the privacy of one's own home - I've been drinking beer et al since I was five or so, although obviously not in large quantities. It's only the purchasing of alcohol that is denied to minors.

I keep painting and drinking seperate, just not by choice.
The places where I can get alchohol are a a little different from where I paint...

How exactly are addictions to ultra-common chemical substances "hobbies"?
