I have been playing Dawn of War a few times a week, a few games at a time, and today, when my friend got it and we were going to play on the internet, it stopped working.
At first, when I bought the game, It ran every time I clicked on it.
However, soon after that (a week) I had to restart my computer whenever I wanted to play it. No biggie, most RTS games will do this at some point or another(at least on my computer).
But now, after only a month of owning this game, it has crapped out. I tried to start it, but it wouldnt work, restarted(like always) but this time, IT DIDNT START! I have tried almost every way to start the game but it refuses. It thinks, the process shows up, but then it never starts and the process goes away.
My computer is:
A few years old
Windows XP service pack 2
Brand new ATi 9600 with Catalyst drivers
512 megs of ram
1.8 Ghz Pentuim 4
welll.....I think thats all!
Please, do any of you guys know what could be wrong or how to fix it?
Thanks! You have helped me in the past, and I can only hope that you do so again!
most RTS games require you to reboot your computer before they will work? That suggests something fairly wrong with your PC.
anyway, can we have a dxdiag and a warnings.log (if it generated one) please. You might also want to reinstall the game, run some virus scans, spyware/adware scans and defrag your hard drive.

I dont have any virii and I will do an Ad-aware sweep and a defrag tonite.
But for almost every RTS game I have ever had, It goes through a stage where I must reboot and then click on it.
I have heard that it has something to do with Windows XP Service pack 2?
any other Ideas?

axxizzer i think i know the problem, you say you have a new graphics card, im going to assume you changed you antialising settings for your card?
i had the same problem with DoW when i got a new graphics card, set your card to "application preference anti-aliasing".
hopefully this should help you.

It worked fine after the new card, for weeks!
There is no reason for this, there cant be, nothing has changed!
Running a Defrag now!
I can keep doing things while defragging, right?
Gonna need that warnings.log and dxdiag.txt
yes you can, it'll just run a bit slowly.

looks as though you have renamed/deleted the "engine" folder.
make sure its unaltered and of course....still exists.

And how would I know if I modified the engine? I havent touched anything in the folder 'cept replays! I swear!
The CD spins up, the computer thinks, the process shows up
then
kaput!
Nothing, computer doesnt slow, it doesnt open later!?
Same thing happens with Homeworld 2!
Worked fine, then I had to restart to get the game working, then it never would!
I heard someone say it had something to do with XP servicepack 2
Thoughts?

from what ive heard XP has alot of issues with games, thats why i use windows 2000 Pro.
id suggest checking your folders because according to the information you posted the "engine" folder is incorrect.

OKay, checking out my engine file, I see this:
Locale(folder)-> English->Engine.ucs and Enginloc.sga
Movies(folder)-> just some movie and credit crap
Engine.sga
sga file
64154KB
Please, is there anything wrong with this folder?
This is the only damn game I play!

But wont I lose all my crap?
Also, can I do that same thing with Homeworld?????
Gawd I wanna play that game again
you can backup your save games and profiles before reinstalling. However, if this affects all RTS games then you might want to get your computer looked at (perhaps format it and install everything clean) - at best reinstalling the game will be a temporary solution.

I'm not seeing that, I wont be doing anything major to this comp, its also my dad's so that eliminates the more drastic measures.
When I re-install it, do i just hit the re-install button? Or do I delete it, all the folders with it, then put the disk back in?

i suggest fully uninstalling it, there should be an uninstall utility on winXP so use that.
once you've used to make sure theres no folders still lying around (common).
restart the computer, put the disk back in and reinstall.
make sure you save your profile before uninstalling it if you want to keep your campaign game saved.

WOOOOOT
I reinstalled it and now it works!
But the same isnt true for Homeworld 2...*sigh*
