Is the above possible ?.

I haven't tried it yet but was wondering if anyone here has tried it. The ISP I use in the U.K. is really poor so I doubt it will :(

you should be able to play DoW lag free over dialup - ping isnt such an important factor with RTS games as it is with FPS games: its far more important that your computer is fully capable of running the game.

DoW requires 300-500 Bytes per second and player, your standard 56k dialup modem can do 7000. Won't be a problem.

It isn't a problem at all. I'm dialup, and have seen broadband players disconnect and/or lag more than I have. Actually I've never lagged period. Had 3 or 4 disconnects out of all my games, not too bad if I say so myself. I frequently play 3v3 games as well, so don't let that keep you from playing the game.

btw, Moe, thanks for that info, I've been interrested in knowing that for a while now.

Yeah i use to be on dial up (changed recently) and the only problem i had was dropping.

Graphic settings and CPU effect the game online alot more then connection speed.

When you do it, make sure you disable all the players colors in the game lobby this can potentially help out a lot.

EDIT: oh and use common sense and play smaller games, but hopefully you know that already..

I use dialup, and all the above people are totally right, it's your computer that affects the gaem the most. However, don't play quickstart games or anything over 3v3 if you really want to be safe.

I've played quickstart on 3v3, 4v4, and ffa multiple times and haven't had problems, nor has anyone complained of lag. I think Moe's post pretty much tells you everything.

quickstart games wont generate any more data transfer, but they will have a lot more units out so a slower PC will be more likely to start lagging on quickstart than on a normal game. A powerful PC on dialup will be able to run quickstart quite happily (although Id recommend against it because it isnt as enjoyable...but then its a free world so if thats your thing go for it).

yeah this game works great with dial-up!!! i never have had any problems with my connection in 1on1 or 2on2.

Let me get this straight, so my rig settings @ 1600x1200 with everything maxed can have a negative impact on the multiplayer game?

I would blame my POS Linksys router before I blame my FX-53/X800XTPE/Raptor combo.

a router (particularly a wireless one) can cause problems. My wirelss router causes very occasional periods of lag...usually just a second every 5 minutes or so, its because I get a weak signal for some reason.

The easiest way to see if lag is being caused by your connection or your computer is to play a big skirmish game and see what happens.

Uhm Rob... of course you can play at high settings if your computer can support it. The point TBS was trying to make is that more often than not lag is caused because somebody has the settings cranked up too high for their particular computer.
