"In this thread i will ask all question regarding my Pc. That way i won't have to start a new thread each time. Clever eh? Ok here goes..."

My computer:

Amd Athlon Xp 3000+ (2,1ghz)
Windows XP Pro SP2
1024mb ram
6600 256mb agp 4x/8x (that's all it sez on the box)
Asrock K7S8X mainboard
Audigy 2 24bit soundcard

I bought my new 3d card 3 days ago. Windows runs normally, games crash (any game). I never pressed reset button so many times. Today i started dawn of war skirmish, nothing happens, i want to play online... CRASH!!! Reset button again.

Wtf is wrong with this thing? Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it dont.

Btw this has nothing to do with warnings log or directx, my computer crashes with any game, and in dx dialog all tests were successful. But everything still crashes.

You've done the obvious? Scanned for Viruses and Adware and Spyware?

If you put your old card back in, do games still crash?

I recently had to return my GeForce 6800 GT because it'd gone bad. I got a new version yesterday and all is fixed. It could very well be that you've got a bumb card.

I sometimes run Ad-Aware. I don't have any firewall or virus-scanners. But in the 10 years or so since i have a pc, i only had a virus once or twice... So i don't think i have one now. But i just played DoW online for an hour or so, and nothing happened this time, again... but what about tommorrow? Oh and i don't have my old card anymore, that was also a problem. And i thought i had another one somewhere but it's gone as well...

Well i went to the shop and i now have a 6600GT 128mb.

Let's hope for the best.

Sounds more like a hardware problem might want to test your ram and hard drive for errors try memtest for the ram and hard drive regenerator for the hard drive would strongly advise putting a anti virus in AVG is good and free as well as spybot and adaware for spyware stuff
zonealarm has a free firewall

Giovanni

what is memtest?

I now get this message, along with the famous yellow exclamation sign:

~e5.0001 - Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please
run the Chkdsk utility.

So i did start-run-chkdsk
I see a black window showing some sort of scanning, then
it dissappears and nothing happens.

Sounds like your drive may be having issues.

Did you try doing a normal scandisk first?

Giovanni
28th Mar 05, 1:30 PM
Where can i do that?
You mean that blue screen you see when it boots up and say
"one of the disks..."

What if i just delete the folder C:\$Mft ?

ÜberJumper
28th Mar 05, 1:36 PM
Go into my computer, right click on the disk, go to properties, and one of the tabs should have scandisk on it.

If $MFT is what I think it is, you are in deep doodoo. If this is an NTFS partition, and I'm betting it is, all data on that drive is now suspect.

It might be a really good time to backup everything important on that drive. You may also want to find a SMART utility for that drive, learn how to use it, and see if your drive is recording lots of physical errors. (It may well be on it's last legs.)

Giovanni
28th Mar 05, 2:45 PM
Last legs? It's new ffs, i bought it 24-12-2004. It's a Maxtor 200gb 7200rpm 8mb cache.

Considering that you have been hitting reset so much it is possible that you have developed bad sectors on your drive hopefully not. However go here

http://www.tucows.com/preview/300158.html

And check out HDD regenerator or search for it with google there used to be a free version but I cant find the link to it. It should help you make a floppy that you can then boot from considering you have a 200gig HD it'll proably take a while but it's worth doing wont hurt anything and may fix problems you are having.
You should also run memtest as I said before to make sure your memory isnt suspect the link was provided by Uberjumper. It's not good to be having to hit reset all the time so do some diagnostic's on your system before it turns into a major disaster.

Giovanni
29th Mar 05, 11:56 AM
Not hit reset? The whole computer was stuck, its not me who crashes. Whaddya mean hopefully no bad sectors... Disaster? What kind of pandora's box have i opened for the love of god? AAAARGGGG!!!!!

Can't i just run disk defragment? Ugh... that'll take hours on 200gb... It's a new one by the way, i bought it in december. Maxtor 200gb 7200rpm 8mb cache.

Vertigo
29th Mar 05, 3:43 PM
That doesn't matter. HDDs often go bad either very early (manfacturing defects) or very late (wear). I gave up on Maxtors because I found them unreliable, but your mileage may vary.

Defragmentation, contrary to the party line, has ZERO to do with data corruption. It won't help you if data is being trashed. In fact, it can make things much worse. The last thing you want to do with a (potentially) dying drive is to move all the data around.

You need to use the proper tools. Get some disk scanners, get a S.M.A.R.T. utilty, check for errors.

I'll explain why I think you have a real problem. $MFT is your HDDs "table of contents," it is only manipulated by Windows directly. It's off-limits to normal programs. If the $MFT is corrupted, there are three likely causes I can think of:

1) A bug in the Windows filesystem code (extremely unlikely)
2) physical errors (i.e. HDD going bad)
3) "Low level" software causing problems (viris, malware, etc.)

I'd advise extreme vigilance.

(P.S.: off-topic: Defrag early, defrag often. Time is no big deal, do it while you sleep. Personally, I defrag my system more than twice a week, so defrag sessions never take more than 10 minutes. I'm big on Diskeeper myself, by Executive Software. Also, run disk scanners at least once a month.)

Giovanni

It only happens sometimes tho, what if i delete that folder?

Giovanni

Oh what now?
Sometimes the computer just resets... i see a blue screen, some text, then after half a second it reboots.

HFX
8th Apr 05, 5:27 PM
I would like to second about the drives. I'm having problems with my machine right now do to a possibly failing harddrive. I'm waiting for two new drives to arrive so I can redo the machine. You should enable SMART warnings in your bios and get a utility to read the smart warnings. Don't defrag your drive... it will only make things worse.

Giovanni

ok thanks

Open the side of your case, see if the crashes become less frequent. Take out one of your memory sticks, if that doesn't help put it back in and take out the other one. Your symptoms are consistent with faulty RAM or overheat (of course it could be something else, but you can try to rule out those two first).

Vertigo
9th Apr 05, 10:39 PM
To follow up on Moe's suggestions:

If you think memory might be faulty, memtest86 is a great util to test it.

If you think the case is overheating, your BIOS may or may not have a monitor screen that displays the temp inside the case. It's worth looking for.

(Disclaimer. Sometimes, depending on case config, opening the case can make the temps worse, rather than better, due to disrupted airflow. But that's usually only custom-built rigs with perfect fan placement and rounded cables. I'm going to guess that does not apply to your rig.)

(WOOT: Post 2000!) :bandit:

Giovanni
10th Apr 05, 5:07 AM
It only rarely resets itself, if it was overheating it would happen on a more regular basis right? It mostly happens if i change graphical options in for instance, Doom3.

But right now i have a new problem which is more important at the moment. If i boot up Dawn of War and i want to go online, i click on multiplayer, i get the screen with username and password, i click connect... nothing happens. It freezes for a few secs and then it sez i cannot connect to the lobby or something. Ofcourse my internet connection is working... I dont know what it is, it suddenly did that since yesterday.

Vertigo

Ignore what he just said, basically. I do NOT recommend just flashing your BIOS, it's about the most dangerous thing you can do to your PC. It's generally a last resort, and only if you KNOW what you are doing.

As far as resets, there's no way to know. Heat problems can be intermittent. Heat causes problems by introducing errors into the data. Sometimes the error will be harmless, sometimes it corrupts something, sometimes it causes a reset/freeze.

Backup your data, run a manufactuer's low level format utility, reinstall windows, if problem persists, RMA your harddrive and get a new one

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but don't you think you'd be better off asking this in a DC forum rather than a Dawn of War one?

Man this was weird, i lost my own thread, it didn't show in my list of subscription anymore... ow, a samurai smiley! :sam:

I thought i replied to your post Moe, am wondering where it went now. I think it included something like, i don't know if there's such a thing as a dc forum, maybe on the official page, but since this is my problems thread i'd thought i'd ask it here too. :tophat:
