Hope expansion will not be seperate.

Been thinking about this expansion, I dont think that everyone who plays the game online will buy it. So will this mean that the people without the expansion wont be able to play people with it.
Obviously if thats the case there will be 2 seperate groups looking for games. Which is bad cos I want more people playing.
I hope they release a patch, which will allow people without the expansion to play people with the expansion, just they wont be able to build the new units or play as guard. If they only allow people to play as guard with people who own the expansion then people who play as guard wont be able to compete on the ladder.
This will mean though that the races would have to be balanced so that someone who has doesn't have access to there races new units, due to not owning the expansion, will still be able to counter these new units.
What i'm saying is I really hope that the expansion and any new race(s) will be completly integrated into the current game. This is my current favorite game and Guard are my favorite army so hope it turns out well. :bandit:

why would they do that? I cant think of any other game where people with the expansion can play people without. And one of the previews explicitly said that the new units being added to the existing races are largely there to allow them to counter all the IGs toys...implicit in that is that if you allow someone with the expansion to play as the IG against someone who doesnt have it then the person without it will be at a major disadvantage. In fact, as the expansion is likely to make minor tweaks to all the units in the game (its unlikely that an entire new race and new units could be incorporated into the game balance without also changing a few stats on the existing units) it would be completely unfeasable for the two groups to play.

Hopefully the same kind of thing will happen with DoW:WA as happened with Brood War for Starcraft - everyone will buy it and the community wont suffer any significant fragmentation.

that would never happen. people with winter assault will have all new units/buildings for every race - winter assault isnt just including the Imperial Guard. theres all sorts of stuff they have planned for winter assault. however, i dont plan on buying it. simply because of this goddamn scroll bug which ruins my game...but, if relic/thq were to do something about it, then id definitely make an investment.

there is one game that was planning to do this, Soldner it is called basically everyone with the original game can play people using the expansion they just cant use the new vehicles or weapons, but they can still see them and be involved in games featuring them.
Think about it its a good idea, relic still get there money from the people who buy the expansion and people with the expansion, who want to play with the new units still get to choose from all the online games available. The alternative is to have a large group of people playing the normal game and people who want to use the new units having to find others with the expansion, which will be a smaller selection of games.
I hope they can do it this way, probably wont either way i'll still buy it. Just would be cool if they could do it this way, I cant see any down sides to it.

You are aware most people will get the expansion because everybody wants to see the Imperial Guard. Besides the IG, there are more features and additions that we are certainly (or we damn well better be!) unaware of.

If the guard are implemented in a way that only people with the expansion can play against them, then they wont be a proper race, unless the expansion really takes off and eveyone forgets about playing the vanilla game. Where as if you can at leat play against them with out having the expansion then, you got a bigger selection of games you can play and they can be part of the ladder.
I want to play as the guard and not have to struggle to find a game to use them in.
I hope everyone does buy the expansion then this wont be a problem but, not everyone who bought the original game will buy it though. Just how it is.

I don't see a way how this would be possible. It would only work of all the graphics of the new race were already in DoW classic. Since that is definitely not the case there is no chance playing classic vs expansion.
Imagine the download it would take before you could start. And relic won't give away all the stuff they programmed for WA for a free download.

They did with Impossible Creatures. "Insect Invasion" I think it was called. It's a free downloadeble expansion pack.

Chances are with Winter Assault though are pretty slim. :p
