OK, this is drivin' me MAD! You guys are my LAST RESORT or I will go even more bonkers than I already am...

I'm running Windows XP. Now, when I try and execute a 16-bit app, the little hourglass hovers next to the mouse, then goes away. Nothin' happens, I check Task Manager, there's a bastard process called NTVDM.EXE eating all my CPU time. I kill NTVDM, my CPU time is back, my app doesn't run.

Same thing with a DOS app, except I just get a "Bad command or file name" message.

Now, I *think* I know the fix... it's contained in the XP Service Pack 1. Trouble is, I don't have the time/bandwidth (on my school's 56k connection) to d/l the 30MB of fixes in the Service Pack.

So, does someone know another fix? Please!!!

i have no idea what this NTVDM is, but if you are POSITIVE it is not nessescary, then delete the application, and it might fix for you. otherwise, youll have to download the service pack fix.

NTVDM = NT Virtual DOS Machine.

WinXP and Win2k are both fully 32-bit and thus can't run DOS/Win3.x 16-bit apps. The NTVDM (together with a program called WOWEXEC.EXE) emulates the 16-bit environment so that these older progs can successfully run.

My NTVDM doesn't seem to work properly, and that's the problem.

Thx Tbird, but I've already tried that... and of course, like typical m$ advice, it didn't work :p

Have you run this app on other operating systems? If so why don't you give compatability mode a try.

The apps in question (MS-DOS and 16-bit) run fine on Win2k. Compatability mode doesn't work, believe me, I've tried.
