To avoid lagging people online with my awesome 4fps during battles (on Low settings), I'm going to need to upgrade.

Currently I have:
Intel Celeron 1.8GHz CPU
256MB RAM
48MB integrated graphics
A motherboard with only PCI slots

I have 1GB of RAM coming along, but I'll also need a new motherboard to get a decent graphics card. I'm not sure where to go or what to get here. I know my processor is a socket 478 thing, but I don't know what else I'll need on a new motherboard to make it compatible with what I've got.

All I really want is to be able to play at 20 or above fps (this is the recommended number, right?) on Low or maybe Medium settings, and I have about £200 to do it in. Can anyone help me out with what else to buy, apart from the RAM which is already ordered?

I would not recommend ordering RAM at this time, since it will not fit into a new mainboard IIRC.
You will also need a new CPU and a graphics card (this is the most vital thing since I think you're running an onboard chip atm, I'm amazed DoW actually works with that (the drivers are 3(!) years old)) if you get a new mainboard. What you are going to buy highly depends on your budget though.

The RAM can be cancelled, I've just found out it's out of stock anyway.

Obviously I definitely need a new graphics card anyway, and not having an AGP slot on my current motherboard is why I want a new MB too, since I've been told that PCI graphics cards are just not worth it. The MB itself doesn't have to be top-of-the-range or newly released - just compatible with my processor (preferably) and drives, have an AGP slot, and a few USB ports. I'll be very suprised if there are no existing MBs that have a 478 socket and an AGP slot.

My budget is about £250 once I cancel my RAM order. Call it £300 tops. And all I want with it is to be able to play DOW without lag, I'm not bothered about a fantastic full gaming system.

£300 ought to be a give away - sounds like he's in UK somewhere....

Compatibility with Drives (ATA) should not be a problem.

You ought to be able to pick up a MoBo, CPU AND Video card for £300 ... unless prices are just out-freaking-rageous over there.

$200 US gets an AMD Athlon 3000+ chip and a good Motherboard.... (that's about £100).

I'm in the UK. Confident in physically putting pieces together? Yes. Confident in picking out compatible things? Not entirely, which is why I'm asking for help. Wattage is 250W, I believe.

I concur with the others.

Could someone recommend a decent PCI Express motherboard? It wouldnt hurt him to jump into the next generation rather than just go to AGP.

One thing I would recommend even if you don't go with the above, go with socket 939 if you're worried about future upgrading potential. Should give you a lot more scope to change the CPU in years to come. Make sure it's a PCI Express board as TBS said.

You may be able to source some of those components at a lower cost from www.ebuyer.com (they are available in the UK) I have used them plenty of times before and never had a problem.

Check them out (and other sites) before you buy anything to make sure you are getting the best deals.
