Me and my freind cannot play in the same game - server side issue?

basically, we can play with or vs anyone - except each other! when one of use is in a game, the other cannot join. this is a bugger for clan games...we have configured the firewalls so dow is be able to use our internet freely. could this be a prob with gamespy servers?

EDIT: i cannot join his direct host games either...
