Hey folks..

Just got the game last week (its awesome btw...already one of my favorite RTSs), and I am having troubles with setting the start location. I see the numbers on the maps....and I see in the options that you can set starting location to "Random" and "Fixed", but those words mean nothing to me. So far I am not seeing how to select which start location I want to start at....and same thing for my computer enemies. Every time I try to skirmish it seems like its randomly placing them.....most of the time it seems to drop their start location right freaking next to mine, which is a little frustrating. I am a little more laid back in my skirmishing....I like to have plenty of distance between myself and the computer enemies.

Could someone please help me with this? I have tried everything, I think.....I just don't see any possible selection on how to set where you start, and I just can't believe that they wouldn't offer that option. Its just such a basic feature to have....they didn't forget to put this feature in did they? If they did....could someone please at least explain to me what the hell "Fixed" and "Random" start location is all about?

Unfortunately, you can't pick your starting location. The game will set up every player, human or comp, from the first slot down, regardless which slot you picked. Say you put yourself into slot 2 and the comp into slot 5 on a 6 player map, you will start in slot 1, the comp in slot 2.
Random starting location is used to allocate team members not sitting in slots right next to each other when the game starts, it doesn't truly randomise the starting slots.
Hope that answers your question.

Wow.....

Well I appreciate the assistance, but I am seriously blown away that this is not in the game. Such a basic feature.....I don't think I have ever played an RTS that didn't allow you to select your location. How disappointing.

Still an awesome game....but damn....just astonishing.
I mean why in the world would I want a map that has two sides, but just happens to house a maximum of 4 players, and will not let me place the enemy on the opposite side?

I really hope they are considering adding this feature in a future patch....

However, Worf, didn't fixed locations work correctly in patch 1.2 version?

I am sure you could choose your location the for playing against the AI 1v1 on a 3v3 map for example.

Did I dream this or was it like that once?

It wouldnt surprise me to see the feature added in a future patch or in WA...a lot of people are disappointed about it.

CTQ: I admit, I almost never played against the AI but in multiplayer I'm pretty sure it happened as well in 1.2 (for example when a player left the game shortly before the countdown ends and the teams are not set to auto).
