Strange research ship problem (Homeworld)

I have 3 research ships, but ever since they took a little bit of damage during a battle, only 2 of them show up in the research manager, the first and the third...the second slot is blank. Tried everything short of blowing them up and rebuilding them...any ideas?

That happened to me in a MP Skirmish game the other day... only thing I could do was to rebuild the RV.

Think of it as an interesting strategy you can try on your opponents, you can force this to happen if you know what you are doing....

What exactly do you have to do to make this happen? If I know, then maybe I can keep it from happening again...it's not really a big deal, but it's kinda annoying...

i had this happen when i moved my RV in a strange direction and a the ion-cannons on a HVC fired on it
