View Full Version : [WA] Can't install - WA wants me to patch DoW first

When I try to install Winter Assault over an unpatched Dawn of War, I get the following message:

Error! You are attempting to patch the wrong version of Dawn of War. Please ensure you have installed all patches between version 1.0 and the current patch version.

Could this be because I bought DoW in America, and WA in Canada? I can't imagine there'd be two incompatible north american versions...

I've tried to install the patches, but patch 1.10 fails, telling me it's corrupted and I should redownload it (even though its MD5 checksum is correct). I've tried the solutions listed in the thread about corrupted patches (installing in safe mode, etc.) and they don't work. After several re-installs and failed attempts to patch or install WA, I'm desperate for help here.

Is one of the two an international version?

I don't think so. They're both in English. I got DoW off of amazon.com (here (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001X64WO/qid=1127546286/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_unbuck_2/103-1194067-8798239?v=glance&s=videogames&n=229534)), and WA from Futureshop in Burlington, Ontario. Neither of them seems to say anything about being an international version.

i'm sure thats not the case, i bought my DoW and WA in the same place, and i get this problem, it's completely stupid, you'd figure WA would install the correct patches for me prior to WA installing. THey definetly didn't think this one through.

OK, try patching DoW manually - to get past the 1.10 corruption issue look in the DoW directory for a file called "patch.err", it will tell you which file is corrupt. next, look on the DoW CDs in the archive files (you will need winrar - a free download) and find this file on the disks...extract the file and overwrite the version on your harddrive then try to patch again. Repeat the process until the patch completes successfully.

When you have DoW patched up to 1.4 try installing WA again.

There shouldnt be a difference between the US and Canadian versions unless the canadian version is french.

Ok if you can't get past that corruption error it might be a serious problem. Contact THQ official tech support.

Hey guys, I'm new here and I'm having the exact same problem as the topic creator. Furthermore, when I followed the instuctions given a few posts back, I found that my Patch.err file is 0 bytes and has nothing in it...

Any ideas? I love this game but haven't been able to play for a while because of this garbage with the patches and I was excited to hear the WA expansion came with them all so I thought I could bypass the problem, but alas, no such luck...

I have this same problem. I am installing the patches one by one.. But the 1.10 Patch is corrupted no matter where I get it from, even from the Reliable sources all the helpful forum people name.

I don't play online, so I've never had to patch before.
Is there any solution to this that doesn't involve me Modifying my game and having to manipulate the program's files?

I'm just not that good at modifying archives and editing files.
I guess I'll try and download it from more sources..
Please Help me

Thanks for the prompt replies. I tried the method you suggest, TBS. I made three failed attempts to patch from 1.01 to 1.1, and each time, PATCH.ERR said it was a different file to blame:

First try: W40kData-Sound-Speech.sga
Second try: W40kData-SharedTextures-Full.sga
Third try: Engine.sga

But at least we're making progress, right? Alas, no:

Fourth try: W40kData-Sound-Speech.sga

This, as you can see, was the very same file I had just replaced after my first failed attempt to patch. Having been at this for four hours today, I threw in the towel at this point.

I used to have DoW patched to 1.2, but I'd installed some minor mods, and so I uninstalled them and DoW in preparation for Winter Assault. I'm beginning to think it was sheer luck that I ever got as far as 1.2 in the first place. I've taken WA back to the store. Thanks for your help, folks, even though it didn't work out. I hope others have better results. :)

INTERESTING!!
Those files you listed,
First try: W40kData-Sound-Speech.sga
Second try: W40kData-SharedTextures-Full.sga
Third try: Engine.sga

But at least we're making progress, right? Alas, no:

Fourth try: W40kData-Sound-Speech.sga

Those same files seem to cause trouble for ME!
During the installation, those files always get stopped and analyzed in the Install progress indicator!
Maybe we're on to something?

Try disabling any anti-virus software etc.

Make sure you have plenty of free harddrive space.

Make sure your harddrive is fully defragged.

Make sure your TEMP directory isnt read only.

ellipsisjones: you gave up too easily :p

I don't have any anti-virus software.

I have sixty GB of free hard drive space.

I defragged more than once over the course of my many, many re-installs in an attempt to get this working.

My temp directory is not read only.

My paging file has 3000 MB reserved to it.

I tried several times both in normal mode and in safe mode.

I tried disabling all non-microsoft services when starting in safe mode.

I tried manually moving the files, as I detailed above.

I tried patching with the DoW disk in the drive, and I tried with the disk out of the drive.

I tried playing the game after installing it and after applying the 1.01 patch.

I tried turning the computer off and back on again.

I tried sacrificing a fatted calf to the Aztec sun-god, Quetzltapocl.

And, of course, I tried several times to let the expansion patch my game before installing, which I'm told it is supposed to be able to do as a matter of course. None of the aforementioned techniques helped with this attempt either.

I spent four hours attempting to patch the game on friday, and another four on saturday.

Explain to me how I gave up too easily?

That was an attempt at moderator humor, hence the ":p"

At this point, the only thing I can recommend is bugging the professionals about this - and that would be THQ tech support.
