Before 1.4 and winter assault my Dawn of War install ran fine, now at the most random of times the game begins to stutter incredibly. Esspecially when using the minimap to look around.
I have found that the stuttering occures moreso on large numbers of models on screen, which isnt suprising, but also occurs when looking at small numbers of on screen models and animations.
The problem seems universal: I have tried different driver versions, and reinstalls of Dawn of war.
Not only this, but one can instantly dismiss an isolated case, as this problem seems to be quite wide spread, and at a recent Lan event in town, almost all players using 1.4 or Dawn of War experienced this problem, though after much deliberation amoung thos ehaving the problem, and much trouble shooting including game configurations and driver reinstalls, it was discovered that the problem prodominantly, but not exclusivly tragets those users with hyperthreaded or ATI systems.
I am suprised by the extent and impact of this problem.
We have found a temperary fix, which can eliminate the stuttering from any system suffering it, but it is tiresome, and require repitition when the problem reoccurs.
This fix includes simply looking at as many units or animations as possible, alt-tabing to windows then back in, this should remove the stutting until it randomly occurs again.
On mulitple Intel AMD ATI and Nvidia systems, our group has tried the following remidies, and they were indeed tiresome, extensive and fruitless.
1. New and Old drivers
2. Complete wipe and reinstall of drivers
3. Hyperthreading on, and off
4. Reinstalls and wiped of the game
All of this was done on multiple pc's.
I would like to clarify that this problem is not preformance related throught he following two reasons:
1. systems of incredible preformance stuttered even on the lowest of settings.
2. This problem did not occure before possibly 1.3 and definently not before 1.4 and WA.
POSSIBLY RELATED: We also discovered during our deliberations that the automatic graphics configuration utility provided by dawn of war provided estatic and random results across multiple systems when used multiple times on systems, many of which were far to low relative to actual system preformance.
The definition of the stuttering at hand is as follows:
At random points throughout the game, starting mostly imidietly after initial map load, the game will stutter when looking at any struture, unit or animation. The nature of the stuttering includes the game freezeing for roughly a second, then running brilliantly the next second, and repeating this cycle. The stutting does NOT appear to be related to FPS preformance, instead it seems as if the fram freezes, then continues, almost like watching a high bitrate video stream online
Hypothesis for the cause include a 1.4 graphical issue, an (most likely) Ati driver issue, but the bug was someone prelevelant on other nvidia systems, since the stutting does not appear to be FPS related, it is also hypothesised that it is a cache or loading error, possibly a optimization included with the latest versions of the game.
So to cap.
Stutting
Occurs on multiple and high end to low end systems
Occurs on all hardware, more prodominant on Intel HT and ATI setups.
Occurs often.
Game reinstall doesnt work.
Occurs on different levels of windows updatedness, including fresh install to fully updated.
Did not occur on older versions
Different driver versions help, but do not fix the problem
Total refresh of drivers does nothing to prevent the problem.
On a final now, i and many of m friends have seen many other posts on these wonderful forums sadly oftenly dismissed as being small and unconnected. We wish to bring to light this widespread problem. And given the massive amount of information given above implying the scope and depth of the problem, we hope that it will be realised, as it has for, us that the problem is beyond the leage of ordinary users, and must be atteneded to by either driver programers, or dawn of war developers.
On a happier note, between the random stuttering Winter Assault is a wonderful game with a short, but very rich set of story lines, and i and many others from the local scene hope to be playing it as well as 1.2 dawn of war ran very soon.
EDIT: emails to relic to recent for reply, response from ati to 2 emails sent by myself and a close friend gave both directions to reinstall drivers (ignoring the stated fact we had alreadt tried this on multiple systems) and another reply sending us to a useless page concerning troubleshooting preformance issues. We would have much prefered ATI so simply answer back stateing that the problem has now been relised and work is being arranged on fixing it.
