Here lately, there's been almost nothing but negative posts in regard to WA and to a degree DoW as a whole. Yet, while there are flaws with the game, as in any other, most of us are still here.

Why?

There must be things you love about this game, even if you dislike WA, you still play it presumably, so what are the reasons?

What do you love most about DoW and WA that keeps you here and makes you play it over a year after the original game was released?

For me, I'd have to say what I love most about DoW and WA as a whole is the entire aspect of being drawn into the battlefield through the visual and especially the audio.

What other game, RTS or not, has audio on the quality of this one? What other game has soldiers screaming war cries, cursing their enemy as they kill them and issuing rallying cries to their allies.

The audio is the thing I love most about this game.

Of course there are numerous other things, I like about DoW, about how it isn't a typical RTS and moves more to the tactical, but that's another story.. so..

What do you love most about DoW/WA?

I will show you what i like most in DoW : :D

http://img381.imageshack.us/my.php?image=relic000214zo.jpg

And the imbalance isn't as big as it used to be in older DoW versions. There are some things that need to be changed, but nothing as dramatic as the Seer Council in early versions or the Defiler/Sorcerer in 1.3.

What else do i like:
-The maps
-The mods
-The skirmishes
-The community always coming up with new strategies
-Kasyr Lutien

The audio is some top notch stuff. Though saying it's the only game with some wicked audio is stretching it a bit. Might i say Morrowind, Clive Barker's Undying, American McGees Alice, Divine Divinity, Rain Bow Six, WH FB Dark Omen... the list goes on.

To get back on topic. What I love most about this little peice of codeing is that I still havn't uninstalled it from my HD since buying DoW from the begining (Barring my fatal system crash). And thats a big thing, I love this game and havn't had this much fun in a hell of a long time.

The exelent grapichs, flawless combat animation and the warhammer theme...
Have`nt played WA yet, the guards seem like a cool addition to the game..
And also, a lot of the maps are gret.

I love the game's races, they're well defined, not the most balanced, BUT IMAGINE IF IT WAS, damn it would be even better. The most perfect game ever.

Yeah, I mis-spoke there. I meant battle audio wise, not on a whole. Any game I've played hasn't quite had the unique flavor that that DoW has with combining death throws, screams, curses at the enemy while killing them, battle cries, rallies, ect. That's the best aspect to me.

Granted, for pure audio bliss, certain games beat it no doubt. I didn't clarifiy what I meant... but I have now. :)

The combat animations: Watching a Kan saw someone in half, or a marine brace his foot against a slain enemy and rip his combat knife out of the body, makes me love the game.

Firstly i love the new music....its an incredible improvement over the old one.

Secondly i love the faster gameplay although some things still take way too long(eldar armor/damage researches for instance, symbol of chaos, etc).

Thirdly its more balanced.Still has some insane,WTF things though, but its much better than in DoW.

Guard is refreshing.I had gotten bored of the same 4 races.

The new look of chaos........no longer just SM clone army plasma spam!Amazing!

The attention to the small details, all the detailed animations, and sounds. Not to mention I love being able to zoom in right down to the deck and see it up close and personal. And there is nothing like zooming in on your IG turret and seeing shell casings laying all over the ground... brilliant.

I'm with Redeye. The details Relic has given to the character models, terrain, and gore are fascinating and exactly what I was hoping for in an RTS. Starcraft was way too tame. I mean, a huge war-torn galaxy needs to have ruins and corpses laying around, doesn't it? That's what Relic did for us, and I praise them for it.

There is a lot that I love about this game. The game does have incredible graphics and sounds. I remember when I first got DoW, and I knew absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, of the DoW Universe. I rememeber looking at a dred and thinking WTF?! Its a box with legs... And I thought the speaches were cheezy, and some of the graphics reminded me of a 60's Sci-fi B movie.

Then I started reading up on the background, and I really started to appreciate it. And the more I played, the more it grew on me.

As far as the battles, I love the intensity. I love the dirt flying around from artillery, the kill animations from the Kans and dreds. The flashy colors of rifle shots, and the background sounds are incredible for completing the enviroment.

I don't have the same view on the "imba" as you all do, I don't play online. I play all skirmishes against the AI using the AI mod. I look at things as a sum of the whole, and each race has a "uber" or imba aspect that makes it unique. If everything had an easy counter, I wouldn't enjoy the challenge as much. I'm free to enjoy it all because I don't care about the ladder.

And lastly, one of the things I love about the game was the community effort to add to this game. I hope the devs continue with this approach by releasing the editor, but the community here has been incredible in creating additional units, tools, and gameplay aspects such as maps. And with the tools available, changing the game with ease is an added feature (I hope this will continue).

Those absolutely nerve wracking games that last for an hour, that ebb and flow. The ones with the Phew!, survived that wave, then the Oh Crap!, another wave and when all the team work and the massively difficult to maintain pressure that was applied by both sides finally pays off with the first defeated army being... on the enemy side. YES!!! finally. :grrr: Then it's right back to business, as there be more killing to be done. :evilnod:

When those games happen it can be a real RUSH.

The best part though. It goes great with

it's in circumstances where somewhere's having a go at you and all you think of is the orks yellin' "what? sod off!" plus bringing your childhood gaming experiences into a more compact less geeky package, i'm too old to collect and build/paint an army without feeling extremely embarrassed now. (my ig army is hidden away in the loft from the missus and her dustbin.)

This game makes me more involved & excited when playing than just about any game I've ever played. It takes so much thinking on your toes it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. Winning a good battle can really make my day. Feels like I'm superman. :fencing: Even when I loose I have fun... although not as much as when I win. heh.

I love to watch replays, I can really take time to enjoy the different animations and all of the aspects of the graphics that goes into this game.

Just seeing a squad of orcs taking down a turret that's firing at them is cool to see. You can actually see the light flashing on the orcs faces as the turrett is hurling bullets at them.... dat roxxors.

The graphics rock, the sound rocks, the gameplay rocks but the thing I love most of all is the unique personality of each race. The "last man, last bullet" attitude of the guard, the absolute bloodlust of chaos, the supreme confidence of the space marines, the mock benevolence of the eldar and last but certainly not least, the sheer innocent brutality of those karazy orks!

It's awesome, just awesome. Minor balance issues aside, this game just rocks me to the core and I can't wait for the next expansion.

I would like to add that my favorite voices are from the SM Dreadnought. I picked up the game along with the expansion for the first time, and love the Guard (why I bought it). I played the DoW campaign just the other day, and that Dread's voices are just too cool for words.

"Even in death I still serve."

Mwuahahaha.

oi what do i like about this game???? lets see.......

No fooling around with resources
No having 200 individual units to manage
No 30 different buildings to manage
No wasting pop cap with builder units all that counts are your fighting units

I also like that fact that when you kill it doesnt just fall down in a pre scriped death animation It gets throw to the ground, has its head stomped on, and then gets finished off with a chainaxe blow to the head (I love beserkers)
its a RTS reduced of all non essential elemets and instead is throw into the blood filled Warhammer 40k universe
and thats what i like about this game

Azara
28th Oct 05, 3:56 PM
Like Klaus said the lack of resource management (except the obvious of course) is a big plus

i get to play as eldar my favourite 40k race, but more importnatly i occasionally get to spam prisms and laugh my ass off at all the f*** heads who previously were trying to kill me to stop me teching

i love getting the avatar just before anhialating the enemy just to rub it in cause the bastard tried to kill me rpeviously (i know the point of the game is to kill you but thats not the point in this case....i think...nvm)

i love the detail, the voices-especially the chaos voices and the sindri chaos sorcerer voice,

i like the kill animations

but most of all..yeah..most of all..I LIKE THE WAY YOU MOOOOOVE

sry couldnt resist anyhow those are the main things

edit: oh yeah i also like the orc/bodies combo, seing all those green skin corpses all over the place adds a lot to the atmosphere and is fun in my opinion since the corpses then act like a catalogue of your battles and stuff, i just find it cool anyhow

I collected Lizardmen miniatures for about a week. I collected Space Marine miniatures for two days. Since I bought Dawn of War, I've played it at least twice a day.

Everything fantastic (mainly the audio; there's nothing quite as bloodboiling as a WAAAAAAGGHHHH!!) has been mentioned already, but I think when all's said and done.. what do I love about this game?

"If you will not serve in battle, you will serve on the firing line!" BLAM! - The Imperial Commissar.

First, my favourite kill animations-

The way the IG psyker raises his hand, focuses his mind, and blood spurts from his enemy's chest.

How the Bloodthirster spins and lops the head off of the avatar after getting slapped around by the flat of the Wailing Doom.

How the avatar looks like its going to lose, but while the bloodthirster rears up to roar in triumph, it snatches it sword from where it fell and plunges it into the bloodthirsters exposed chest.

Force Commander/Chaplain omgwtfpwning the bloodthirster!!! ownage to the max!

Now, my favourite voices-

"Argh, my spleen!" (Cultist)
"You shall DIE by traitors hand!" (CSM)
"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment" (librarian)
"Guns might be that way...er...lets go the other way" (gretchin)

And also-

The astonishing amount of blood a dreadnought can squeeze from an Ork.

How the resources are essencially limitless (I remember Age of Empires, when the wood was gone, it was Gone)
The single player campaign.

How the music changes when the necrons appear...before it would have been frightening when they come, but the music makes it all so exciting.

On that note, how the Necrons, after you literally chop them in half pull themselves back together and stand back up again, like off the Terminator.

Watching a guy yell "IMBA IMBA" at you when he should really be defending his base

And a whole lot more...

In WA I love Fire dragons and Chaplain, my favourite units form eldar and SM.

I would have to say the sheer diversity of the races. No other RTS in history has ever delivered so much variety in unit types, tech trees and potential counters to units with the possible exception of Starcraft. Not even Warcraft III. Units excel at vastly different things, and depending upon terrain, upgrades, unit types and the combination of BOTH micro AND macro management determines winners.

"Argh, my spleen!" (Cultist)

Thats only the best line in the game.

Really what I like about the game is the sync kills. Even though I play off a computron5000, they still look nice. Especially comparing the action and graphics in this RTS to others.
