UPDATE: Hi, I'm a moron, pleasure to meet you chap...;)
I downloaded the 78.01 forceware drivers, YES the very same drivers that Moe links to in his stickied thread above, also the very same ones that are apparently the best forceware's to use for XP (I just figured that the thread was out of date and that I would try the very newest drivers, WRONG, I should have known that the newest forceware's are usually buggy and unstable).....Anyway, I'm now running DoW in one window on one monitor (in 1280 x 1024 x 32 , with 4x AA and 4x AS truned on, I may go higher IF I need to, but 4x looks amazingly crisp and runs really well....So, in summation 81.98 drivers BAD....78.01 drivers GOOD...Pretty Cool, pretty cool indeed....

Well, I'm going to "ask" a question, and then answer it as well, but for posterity sake, AND in the hopes that a dev. or someone else can add as needed...I'm not sure who the "blame" (and I use this term loosley) lies with here...MS DirectX, nVidia Forceware, or Relic:THQ DoW:WA.

First off, I've been playing DoW since the original launch day back in September '04. First DoW, then DoW:WA, now mostly DoW:Pro, averaged out, at least 2 games a day, everyday since launch. I've been playing it on a decent machine, at highest settings, no problems (well, in really large battles it, of course, did lag, but otherwise...)....

With that said, I just finished building my new dream rig...and when I say dream rig, I'm not kidding...at all...

YES, it's fast, really fast....so fast I'm not even quite sure how to quantify it just yet...YES, it's overkill, waaayyy overkill, and NO I don't care, but thanks for asking all the same ;).......YES, it's pretty, verrryyyy pretty.....YES, I used my own money, NO I'm not independently wealthy, and NO I'm not going to help anyone else purchase one (although, I would be willing to contract to build one, or more, if someone wanted to pay for it up front that is ;) )....

I'm using the newest nVIDIA WHQL forceware, nforce, and ntune drivers, DirectX9.0c, and Samsung's 940B monitor driver.

With that little (ahem) intro out of the way, I installed DoW (all three discs in only a few minutes I might add), booted up just fine, ran non-windowed AND windowed at max settings (w/ 4x AA and 4x AS just fine). Went ahead and installed WA, Go to boot up "Spooge Error: blah, blah, blah"...

I was just running it (DoW) in a window not but 5 minutes before?!?!? Now it won't run at all....what gives!?!?!?....So, just for laughs I try enabling dual GPU (SLI) support, and then try running WA....boots up just fine...only problem, why should I have to run an application using SLI (which also disables my dual monitors :( , which is something that I was REALLY looking forward to), just because I have SLI capability?

I wanted the SLI option for apps that can actually benefit from the tech., but if a game runs fine without it, with the settings that I want (again, maxxed out), it shouldn't be required, should it? Especially since I was just running my old setup on this same monitor config with no problems....

Now maybe I'm just too new to the whole dual monitor/SLI setup world, and I'm missing something here, so if I am someone PLEASE enlighten me....I guess it's not a huge loss...and/or maybe it'll be fixed by the 1.41 update (currently updating)...but if not it certainly would be nice to regain the ability to run DoW:WA without having to run in SLI (or preferrably in SLI with dual monitors, but I think that there is nVIDIA's game).

Thanks in advance for any assistance that anyone can provide, at least for now I can still run in SLI (may as well bump AA and AS to x16 and x8 then, and Full Res Textures if that's still an option)

Last but not least, here's my DXDiag Log....

Very detailed post :p

In short: using dual monitors on your (impressive) SLI setup causes a spooge error when running WA.

My guess is that this is a glitch with the nvidia drivers, all I can recommend is that you try out each iteration of new drivers and see how it goes.

You could also try playing around with this workaround (http://forums.relicnews.com/showpost.php?p=603437&postcount=35) to bypass the spooge error.

Trying this advice i have replaced the Nvidia 81.98 with 78.01, 71.69 (the last ones I had working on an older PC) and the Omega drivers..all to no effect. Still get crash to desktop after a few minutes of play.

What does a crash to desktop error have to do with this thread?

More updates (I would just edit the above post, but I don't want this to be missed by doing so, so anyway.....)...

Thanks TBS, it is pretty impressive, and technically the only thing that I don't use for both work (this really is intended as a workstation first) and play is that second graphics card. Now if only I could go back to NOT having the responsibilities that allow such extravegences in life, I could find some time to actually get to PLAY with the darned thing ;)...Oh, and sorry about not encapsulating that log, my bad, thanks for taking care of it.....

Okay, a little more info (from a little more experimentation) regarding these issues. As I said in my (edited prior to first reply) above post, the solution IS the 78.01 drivers. Even when running in SLI I had BIG problems (which, in all honesty, SLI is really is NOT necessary to run DoW on extremely high settings on this system. That second card is really for Battlefield 2, FEAR, NFS: Underground 2, and the coming attractions from this year and next.

Anyway, I had some SEVERE graphics issues trying to use this setup. Tons of strange artifacts while moving the mouse cursor around, grinding and stuttering frame rates, etc. In short, it was bad. Fortunately, I fixed everything up just fine shortly after I posted the first post last weekend, unfortunately I've been too busy to get the chance to report back since then...

I had some serious issues with other games as well as DoW (BF2 just stopped loading past the splash video after a few games). So, last Saturday evening, at a frantic pace mind you (so's that I could still make a New Years LAN Party)....I uninstalled every graphics and sound driver that I could find (I had been testing drivers for both the past couple of days), cleaned up every temp directory and driver directory that I could find left behind, and did a complete re-install. nVidia forceware 78.01, latest creative Xfi package, and lastly, DirectX 9.0c (December redistribute).

Everything runs absolutely, totally, beautifully... BF2 in SLI (highest detail settings, 8x AA, 4x AS, 1280x1024x32...fluid frame rates, just frickin' awesome), everything else (that I've had time to install and play so far that is) in single card mode, but I'm pretty sure that SLI would do fine with most everything else as well, since I think that some of my issues may have been complicated by one or two incorrect file versions left laying around....

It definitely sucks to have to reboot to switch between SLI and non-SLI modes (something that the 81.98 drivers have over the 78.01 drivers, but it's not worth the stability issues), but there's always some pennance to pay for running the latest and greatest hardware.....

Oh, and thank you Pjratboy for NOT actually adding anything to this thread....if you're going to rebuff a statement then at least provide a valid (i.e. tested) argument, and also take into consideration that there could be a LOT of factors that differentiate our setups from one another (and not to be arrogant here), but assuming that you are even running anything close to what I spec'ed in my first post.

For instance, if you're running Windows Media Center Ed. then supposedly the 81.98 drivers are excellent, but since I'm sticking with XP Pro until Vista is out and stable (unless someone wants to gift me a copy of XP MCE that is :D ), that's not an option for me right now....but, uhhhh thanks for all the....uhhhh, yeah....

Hopefully, someone else can get something useful out of all this info...

Later all, off to check out that new DoW:Pro 1.5 install.....

ok, Im assuming that the workaround I linked you to doesnt fix the spooge error you get when trying to play in SLI mode? Anyway, you seem to be more than capable of experimenting on your own - like I said before, keep trying new driver releases.

Pjrat: you were getting a crash to desktop error, Phoenixx was getting a spooge error - you had completely different problems. Your probelm is likely caused by faulty hardware or some other driver conflict. This advice was not intended to help people suffering from game crashes.

Huh, my updated-update reply never posted yesterday...

Well...here's the brief of it (I'm really busy, but this is good info, my apologies about skipping the pleasentries for now ;), so here goes).....

1. Nope TBS, never tried the workaround...too messy, too sloppy, maybe on a FAR lesser machine, but (and without trying to sound like a tech snob)...NOT on this machine my good fellow, I wouldn't dare think of it ;).....

2. Yeah, I can usually troubleshoot these things myself. I've been building machines since my uncle (electronics/computer/mainframe network engineer type) started teaching me when was 14...so 16 years of experience now. I'm usually way more on top of reading up on drivers and such before a new build, but with how busy life has me these days, it took all the free time that I had (and since I myself work am in engineering and design, write, proof, draw, etc, etc. technical documents at work all day) was willing to devote to keeping up on, to just spec and assemble the hardware that I wanted to use, that I forgot about the all important driver research until it was too late (what with the build happening during the Christmas holiday week, and with plenty of family in town staying at my house and all)....

3. Anyway, I had some more time to "play" with drivers yesterday, and do some good testing last night, and here's the results...

78.01 drivers worked, but they were buggy (I did have some game crashes in the past week, and what I believe to be a memory leak), AND I had to reboot to enable or disable SLI. So, since I had some time this past weekend...after doing a complete and thorough un-intsall of all nVidia drivers and driver directories, I went ahead and tried another Forceware version, 81.85 (a slight update to the 81.84 driver package, which comes highly reviewed by a number of tech sites...see kids, taking the time to read IS a good thing, ugghhh ;)...

...anyway, I re-installed everything starting with the nVidia 6.07 AMD MoBo chipset drivers, then the 81.85 Forceware drivers, then DX 9.0c (december redistribute .exe), and VOILIA, so far all of the games that I have tested run fine in either single card, or dual card, or both modes....most actually seem to run MUCH better as was promised by the afore-mentioned articles. It appears that a memory leak that I had noticed previously has disappeared, or at least become FAR less severe...AND, last but certainly not least, I can switch modes seamlessly without having to reboot now (although, I will be watching for any instabilities that this feature may cause over the course of both long gaming sessions and those involving multiple games)...

So, in conclusion, 78.01s work (I've found rather poorly though under longer testing, but they do work), but the 81.95 nVidia Forceware drivers appear to be the current best route, for me at least....In all honesty though, the 81.98s (the original drivers that I tried) may very well be fine and I just had a bad install that first time. Either through my own fault for not cleaning up properly (although I'm almost positive that this was the first graphics driver that I tried on a fresh windows build on a brand spankin' new machine, so....) or the driver installer's fault.

So, I won't rule the 81.98 drivers out, but I honestly don't plan on doing any more driver testing for now if the 81.95s continue to work fine for me. Besides, in the detailed driver revision notes, it does say that the 81.98s are more for XP Media Center Ed. users (again with that whole reading thing ;) )....

I still can't believe how much better DoW looks on this new machine, I mean it looked really good on the old machine, but now it just has soooo much depth to the image, and the animations run soooo seamlessly that I'm seeing things that I've never noticed before after nearly 1 1/2 years of serious playing...just freakin' beautiful, oh and DoW:WA:Pro 1.5 so freakin' rocks as well....

Hope this helps someone else at some point....

Later all

Huh, apparently it wasn't not very brief in the end....oh well....

The file to edit is in the DoW directory (C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\Drivers to be precise), it is specific to DoW and wont effect anything else.

Anyway, glad you found something that kind of works for you - have fun :).

Nice job tracking that one down!

Id just like to say that I had the same issue. I installed the latest Nvidia nforce 4 drivers (6.70), and the Forceware 2k/xp graphics drivers (81.98), and initially DOW worked ok. However after installing WA (but not patching), it gave me the fated Spooge error. I uninstalled DOW and DOW-WA and tried to install DOW on its own and then install each patch and try to run the game afterwards. After patching it up to 1.4 or 1.41 the spooge error reared its ugly head. Did something get added to the 1.4(+) patches that could have caused this?

All of the time I was doing this i didnt touch the Nvidia drivers. (<Honest> - but lets face it their as flaky as a box of Frosties anyway, and dont get me started on the Nforce 4 IDE/SATA chipset issues)

Anyway to cut a long and totally pointless story short, I did a complete uninstall of 81.98 Forceware graphics drivers, and downloaded/installed the older 81.95 ones. After the mandatory couple of reboots I can now run DOW! YAY, finally. :thumb:

So 81.98 == Spooge all the way
81.95 == Runs ok..

Cheers all
Matt.

Thanks, I'm glad someone else besides me, benifitted from all that mucking about and such....

I was wondering the same thing as you Mattlees, because it didn't start happening until after I patched to the WA 1.41 update, everything was fine until then...but I started noticing problems with other games as well, so I figured that it had to be drivers....

In all honesty, with this new Rig I've had to re-install DirectX 9.0c after every new game install, because unfailingly (and for some strange reason) even when I tell the installer not to, I always seem to end up with some outdated DX files installed....

Now I've found another interesting DoW problem, actually it's a DoW:WA:Pro issue since it doesn't appear to be a problem with DoW:WA vanillia...the version that I'm running (1.5) either crashes or makes the game pretty much unplayable when I ALT-TAB in and out of the program even once....I never had this problem with 1.49 (last night was the first time I had time to try 1.5 since I installed it), haven't seen it in vanilla either, so I'm assuming that it's a WAPro 1.5 thing....

Oh well.....

Cheers PhoenixX,

So far (with fingers crossed) i have no problems with DirectX 9.0c, but then again i havent put a lot of games on my new machine yet, so only time will tell.

I think as of my last post @ 23:30 last night I hadnt got the latest and greatest patch. After patching it online its now up to 1.41 and I can confirm everything still works.

I havent tried DOW-WA yet, but will do so when I get home (Its a pain in the bum having to work for a living). However I am confident that using the old(er) graphics drivers will have sorted the issue. Now ive just got to get Mafia to work as well....

Ill update this post with the results.

Mafia is a great game, but its fairly old now (three of four years?) so your best bet at playing it is to simply disable SLI when you do. Just one of your cards is more than it needs so you wont suffer any performance loss.

PhoenixX
17th Jan 06, 10:44 AM
Oh, I did TBS, that's actually the initial reason why I stopped by here last night, was to give them a detailed report of my findings. Which I've done....

I don't believe that Mattlees has more than the one 7800GT (based on his specs in his post), but yeah, i wouldn't think that one would even want/need to run that with SLI.

Really, the only reasons that I even built an SLI system are...

1. As a "Spec Rig" to show off at Lan parties and such (in the hopes of peaking potential customers interests, which it's already done), and...

2. To run Battlefield 2 maxed, Half Life 2 maxed, NFS: Underground 2 maxed, and now FEAR maxed as well....

I'm fairly certain that nothing else (that I own at least) can really take advantage of SLI at this point, but I am psyched to see what an SLI setup can do with next-gen games like "Company of Heroes" and "Unreal Tournament 2007" (well, any Unreal Engine 3 game to be exact).

TBS
17th Jan 06, 11:38 AM
ah, you're right - he only has one card...in that case Mafia should run ok without any tweaking.

As to your rig - I'd love to see FEAR maxed out (perhaps on a projector...), I downloaded the demo but my aging 9800 PRO struggled on it. I'll probably pick it up from a bargain bin in a year or so when I have a new rig and enjoy it at full settings :)

CoH and the U3 engine are looking very sexy as well...

PhoenixX
17th Jan 06, 5:20 PM
You know, to be brutally honest, for as well as some things are done in FEAR, others are severly lacking....

The AI is stunningly intelligent the vast majority of the time (especially on the harder skill levels), and is probably the most challenging FPS AI that I've ever seen, nothing really negative to say here....

The use of lighting and shadows is really spectacular, except for your personal shadow where the technique used for the real time projection of your own shadow does not mesh very well with atmospheric shadows, but other than that it's stunning.

Most of the effects are amazing, but some of them are so over the top (like the fire) that they don't look right, and other things (like the water) aren't nearly as realistic looking as HL2 or BF2. To be honest fire and water have long been two of my benchmarks for a great looking engine (two things that the DoW engine does an excellent job at, thankfully), and they're two places where the effects in this engine fall a bit short IMHO.

Then there's the geometry, I'm not quite sure what someone was thinking when they were doing the geometry optimization. Everything looks so darned flat, round bars aren't even octagons in most places, they are square. I have to be brutally honest, if you can't get your geometry looking right, how can you expect to create an immersive game engine? AND how can you do geometry this poorly when most everything else is done so darned well? The worst part is that most of the geometry problems are to do with static meshes (or what I believe to be static meshes, or at least should have been done with Static Meshes) that could easily have been swapped out at some point during developement, with higher poly models. Not very professional looking IMHO.

Last but not least, the code optimization needs some serious improvement as well. I Love good code optimization, and when you see it in action, you know it. Every once in a great while, this engine can bring even my Rig (and others with similar systems) nearly to it's knees (31-32 FPS) when maxed out. Most of the time my average is +/-60FPS, with my max somewhere above 115FPS, but still....if HL2 and BF2 can't do that to this machine, and this game is really no better in terms of graphics (especially considering the geometry issues) and/or scale than either of those, than something isn't being optimized properly on the coding end....

It's still a fun game though, definitely worth playing, at night, no lights, with 7.1 surround sound (prepare to look over your shoulder a LOT)....:)

But to be fair, after playing HL2 (HL2 looks almost as real, as real life iself, on this setup, no joke) and BF2, and DoW:WA:Pro, and also seeing what is on the horizon (especially Company of Heroes and anything using the Unreal Engine 3), has spoiled me considerably in regards to FPSs, just like DoW has spoiled me considerably in regards to RTSs.....;)

I can't wait for later this year, only problem is I think that I'm going back to school yet again this fall (MBA program), so right as everything starts coming out, I'll running between working full time and taking classes (probably full time as well), oh well, life's never perfect is it?.....:)

Oh, and sorry to get so off topic here, but at least it's my own thread ;)....

-Shane

My main attraction to FEAR was that it is supposed to be very atmospheric (if it will make me look over my shoulder with surround sound on then thats a good thing :)). Sometimes I want a game thats just simple fun and sometimes I want one that will drag me in deeper - something that games still dont do often enough for my liking.

I never got into the original HL but the HL2 graphics do look gorgeous - thats another one Im saving for when I can get round to trading in this machine for something a little whizzier :p

and yes - school/etc sucks...going to uni has severely cut down my gaming time (though I probably spend more time hanging around these forums than I should as well ;)).

Ok as of last night I installed WA on DOW, and tested it, then performed an online update. It worked in both cases. I then proceeded to get heavily involved in a game... That's one of the reasons I didn't post a reply earlier. Damn you all for making such a good and addictive game - and then producing add-ons!

Before getting too carried away however, I did manage to have another play with Mafia. I followed the same procedure as with DOW, that is research - install - test - patch - test and repeat. But alas still no luck. Worse still is the fact that lots of other people have the same issue, but no real solutions seem apparent. I guess its age is starting to show. Oh well never mind, plenty of other decent games out there.

I do have only one 7800 card. I was slightly over budget as it was and couldn't bring myself to part with another £200+vat. Im impressed with what ive got, in a few months I might pick one up and see what it can do extra. That was one of the reasons that I went for the SLI, as it gave me an element of future proofing. I currently get 5x performance increase on my old 9600pro, and XP2000, 512Mb system. When I last checked HL 2 ran in 1280x1024 with everything at max, and COD 2 was at 1600x1200 so im more than happy :)
I will have to go back and try fear. I installed it on my old system and was somewhat shocked to see that it used up 1Gb of ram and only ran in the lowest res. It was a painful experience, and I agree it must have been written really inefficiently. Still everyone nowadays seems to follow that same design philosophy, in that we have processor cycles to burn, and everything will be twice as fast in six months, so why bother? Its sad, especially so if your a software engineer.

Anyway lets end this reply on my main bugbear and reason for my finding this thread in the first place - Nvidia's inability to produce stable hardware and drivers has really annoyed me. Ive been messing around with computers for a long long time, and Ive never seen anything quite as bodged as their current line up. When you spend this kind of money on a system you shouldn't have to spend two weeks researching how to fix fundamentally broken things. I would recommend people stay away from nforce 4 chipsets for a few more months yet, or at least wait until Nvidia accept there are issues. A good nforce chipsets link would be Nvidia's own forums : (http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showforum=34)

What precisely happens when you try to run Mafia - if you only have one card then there isnt the issue of SLI to mess things up, Mafia is a sufficiently recent game to be able to run on XP happily enough.

A solution could be to use compatibility mode - try compatibility with all the older windows versions and see what happens.

The problem with Mafia is that you get a window saying it cant run because a debugger is running - which i know there isnt.
You only get this message if you set it to run in a window, because if its full screen it just stays black and you pretty much have to reset to get out of it.
Like you I was suprised it didnt work. I hadnt played it in a long time due to my girlfriend borrowing it, but I know I had it running on XP before. I wonder now if it could be something to do with SP2. I uninstalled Mafia on my old machine some time ago, but could reinstall it. That would rule out/ incriminate SP2.
Compatibility mode might be a good plan, that is something I hadnt thought about. Luckily I have a spare monitor and space on my desk.. I can see a dual install on new and old machines tonight. It might give me some clue to the culprit.
Cheers.

Try compatability mode first.

Installing on your old PC wont really tell us whats causing the problem on this one (unless you install it, it works and then you install SP2 and it stops working).

Wahoo problem solved!

I tried the compatability mode settings and a whole bunch of other things, and they didnt make any difference, so I hit the web again, this time looking for slightly more vague references. I found one for a completely unconnected game. It appears that there is some third party software hidden in a lot of games that checks for debuggers running in memory to try and stop it being hacked. Anyway it seems that older versions of this software have a bug in that detects some more modern motherboard / graphics card drivers as being debugging tools.
One solution mooted was to go to gamecopyworld and get a no cd patch, as it is generally here where the software resides. This is what ive done and it works like a treat

Gotta love the web!
Cheers all.
