A few days ago I built a new computer... mostly just so I could crank up every setting in DoW and play with my friends.
DoW installed fine, and I immediatly took the disc out and started to install WA. Sadly, the 1.4 patch that that WA installer tries to run encountered an error- a look in the patch error file told me that the W40KData-SharedTextures-Full.sga was incorrect. Again, this is on a fresh copy of DoW... on a fresh copy of Windows! Besides drivers, DoW was the first thing I installed.
I feel I should point out that the 1.0 version woudl start up and play with no problems whatsoever.
So, I figured if 1.4 wouldn't work, I'd uninstall-reinstall and try patching manually up to 1.4. The 1.01 patch went in fine, but the 1.10 patch did not... same error as the 1.4 patch. I would imagine the only reason 1.01 went in is it never patched that texture file.
I looked on the Disc3 CD and extracted the file to my HD, renaming the old one, and naming the new one in its place. Just in case, ya know. Still, same error reported when patching.
I've ran into problems installing the game on the "Not C" partition before, so I tried to install it on my C / Windows partition, but that didn't work either. Same error.
Now, at this point, my friends wanted to play, and I was going to play with them, no matter what. So, I went to my old computer (which never had a problem patching, using these exact same discs) ripped out the HD, and threw it into my new one. I uninstalled the copy of DoW I was trying to get to work and reinstalled it back to its normal partition. I then deleted the THQ directory, and copied my 1.41 WA install from my old HD in its place. I manually edited the registry to change the version number to match what was there, and then I installed WA over top of it again, just to get WA's registry keys in there. At this point, WA happily patched my 1.41 install back down to 1.40 and installed itself fine. Yay!
At this point, I thought I had the problem licked. I went online, and let gamespy download the 1.40 - 1.41 patch and apply it. You know what happened? SAME DAMN ERROR. It was still complaining about that SharedTextures file not being correct. At this point, I'd had enough and just wanted to play- so I overwrote the THQ directory with the one off my old HD again, hacked the registry again, and got online and started playing.
Right now, I'm limping along... but I just know that Relic is going to release a new patch very soon, and as soon as they do, I'm going to be completely screwed. I need to get this fixed before then. I'm not bothering to post my warnings or dxdiag files, as the game runs fine... but I can if somebody needs me to.
Oh, and being a new computer, I've ran several tests of memtest86 with no problems at all... so it's not in my ram, and between the scandisks installing it in different places, it's not in my HD either.
Anybody got any ideas I haven't already tried?
