View Full Version : Trouble joining/hosting multi player games :(

Hi folks,
Hopefully someone can help me out on this one. Within the last while I have switched onto my brothers connection in my house. Since then I have been having trouble connecting to games(was not too bad at first but now I am lucky if I can manage to start a game)

I believe I have set the router up correctly with the relevent port forwarding and virtual servers, but I admit I am not on the firmest of ground with these items.

I have Zone Alone Pro on my own pc and any current attempts i have made at the moment to connect have been done with it on and with it turned off... No difference in the reaction.

Anyway, cheers to anyone who has any suggestion

this pattern repeats itself. If I dont press test for about a minute i get the

if I press test again within a minute or so it works sweet, ad infinitum.

Hmm, something is clearly blocking port 6112 intermittantly.

Can you connect your computer directly to your modem without using the router so we can identify if the problem is on the router or your computer?

Not an option without a bit of rewiring. should be able to try that on wednesday. Out of town till then. Was hoping that I was missing something glaringly obvious.

You dont appear to be - I dont know of any software which would block a port at some times but not at others...I also cant imagine that a hardware fault on the router would have that effect but not cause other, more serious, problems (such as a complete loss of connectivity).

Post back when you have more data for us to work on (ie when you have wired the router out of the equation).

hmm strangeness indeed. Took down connection to stick into modem, forgot to take it off static ip, set everything back up and now I can play like a daemon... if only not as skilled.
I figure the physical wiring is a bit pokey or maybe my network card. I will let ye know for the sake if knowing if I can confirm...

just love the seemingly intermittent behaviour from something that just understands 0 and 1's

When you say "took down connection" - does that mean your modem was turned off for a while? If so then that could have fixed it...you could just have had a dodgy lease from your ISP.

whilst i was messing around with connections(odd setup in house, box->switch->router->modem and was playing around with them for a bit) I did bring down the modem, and am on a dynamic ip address so we would have gotten a new lease.

Saying that though I have put in a new network card, as my comps connection died completly and it has been going along fine now. So I am looking at a definite network card failure and a new ip lease as the two possible solutions.

And Im going to go with it being the new lease that did it, I cant imagine a hardware fault that would cause such a very specific problem - if you werent trying to play games you would never have even known that there was a problem.

bro is on the same connection and the existing lease had been working fine for a bit. not sure if they can just go bad. I would be the first to admit that networking aint my best skill though. Other games where working fine. I.e bro was playing games on his comp. It was a bit of a strange behaviour though. Just hopefully the last of it that I shall see.

Yes a lease can "go bad" (techinical difficulties etc) - if you ever have general net connectivity problems then one of the first things to try is rebooting your modem (leaving it off long enough to acquire a new lease - 10 secs or so). If that happens a lot then you complain to your ISP.
