View Full Version : Cannot see games in lobby. :(

Ok, I've gone through all the router ports, and opened them all up, and the same with all the gamespy ports. I've also run the Dawn of War network test applet and everything passed!!!

But I still cannot see any game servers in the lobby. I can see people talking, and see who they are, but I cannot see any games whatsoever.

Ironically, I just bought this game today. Actually I had just swapped it out from Command & Conquer Generals for this EXACT same issue. I spent 10 hours total, working with my router, opening ports, turning XP firewall on and off (it's off now), and opening ports within it. I'm using a Netgear WGR614 wireless router (I'm on a wired connection though)

Please someone help. This is getting ridiculous. 11 hours now and counting I've battled with this stuff. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

hmm, Generals gave you the same problem? Interesting.

The problem you describe sounds like you dont have the same version of the game as everyone else (ie, you have a mod installed) but as the game is new and the same thing happened with generals that seems unlikely.

Post a warnings.log please.

OK, I see the log - everythings ok there.

Can people see your game when you create one?

not sure. will try right now though.

Ok, I tried hosting a game. I waited for a minute or so, then got this message.....

"Couldn't talk to the game listing server, it may be down or your firewall or router may be blocking UDP communication with the server."

As I said, I opened all the ports, UDP and TCP that is required for this and Generals (they are nearly the same as they both use Gamespy). Also ran the test that's stickied on this forum, and everything passed.

Well, at least THIS game has a forum with helpful people to help with this. :)

I used to use the generals forum - its rubbish :p

Anyway, if we fix the problem for DoW its safe to assume that it will fix it for generals as well...so theres something. Now, to fix it...

If the net test passing suggests that your router is set up properly and the problem is software on your computer, post a log from hijackthis (:google:) so I can see what you've got running please.

Hmm, the only thing that jumps out at me is daemon tools - but that usually stops the game from running at all, not from displaying games in the lobby.

I think the best idea is to shut down everything youve got running that isnt a windows service then try again, if it works after that then we can try to narrow the cause down to a specific app...if it still doesnt work then I'll have to have another think.

Ok, I ran hijackthis again, and clicked every box, and "fixed" them. I'm assuming deleted or shut them off. then rebooted. Here's my current log (just tested DoW again, and still same issue).

Oh yeah, I also updated and ran AdAware also to see if that would help. still nothing. :(

argh

no - I meant kill them off using windows task manager...luckily you dont seem to have done any serious damage, but what youve done is permanent (youve stopped some things from starting when you boot up and killed off a few minor things that you shouldnt have done, if you find things not working come back here and tell me what it is and I'll be tell you how to put it right).

Anyway, the fact that its STILL not working is bizarre - you have effectively nothing running on your computer so it cant be software thats to blame.

All I can suggest is that you put your computer in your router's DMZ, that should eliminate any of its security features from interfering with things.

lol oops. Yeah, everything seems to be functioning ok for the moment lol.

As for the DMZ....I tried that ages ago lol. It's still on DMZ btw. :) There are 1 thing I can think of that might still be an issue....

Static vs dynamic IP address? Right now, I'm on Dynamic I think. Although, it never changes, so not totally sure. As far as changing it to static, that's beyond my knowledge. :(

Just trying to give as much info as possible here. Everything seems to indicate it should be working fine. :(

Ok, just checked my router config again, and I am currently set up to get dynamic addresses from my ISP? I'm thinking this is just for the router though. Not for my PC's IP address. As I said, I'm not very knowledgeable about this area.

hmm, dynamic IP shouldnt be an issue - if it were causing problems (eg in your port forwarding setup) then I would expect it to work ok and then stop working completely.

If your router is set to dynamic IP then that is fine, the router will adapt if the IP changes.

To eliminate the router as a potential cause of the problem is it possible to connect to the net directly through your modem without the router at all?

Failing that you could try doing a clean reinstall of the game - uninstall, delete the install directory, reinstall. That will eliminate any possible file corruptions.

Ok, now we're getting somewhere. Not sure why I didn't try this earlier....

I plugged my PC straight to the cable modem, and tested DoW. I can see the games now, so I'd assume everything is working correctly!! :)

Now the big question. Since we know the problem is something in my router, how do we determine it? As I said above, I've opened all the corresponding ports, enabled DMZ (is that right?), and tested with the NAT test thingy which passed with flying colors. I'd link the results if I could figure out how, can't copy and paste them. :(

Aha, well that is interesting...I think the first thing I would do is save your routers settings (my router can save its settings as a file on your computer so you can restore them later...can yours?) and then reset it to factory settings (again, mine has a button on the config screen, I assume its fairly standard) and start from scratch.

It might also be an idea to type your router's name into google (perhaps along with the word "gamespy") and see if you can find other people with the same kind of problems.

Its 1:15 AM here now so you will have to wait until tomorrow for any further help from me, in the meantime you experiment with router settings.

I just wanted to say thank you TBS! :) I backed up my router settings and reset it to default, which took away all of my port settings I spent so much time on. After that, I couldn't even access the lobby on DoW lol.

However.....

I turned on DMZ on my PC and after that, everything is working great! :) So now, I'm going to have to go back out and buy Generals again also lol.

One question remains though....

If my wife wanted to start playing one of these games, then we might have an issue, as it appears only one PC can be set to DMZ. :(

This whole thing of auto-firewalling the routers is freaking ridiculous if you ask me. Wish some manufacturer would make one that would just split the internet connection and leave it at that. If we get problems with viruses and things, then that's what format and restore CD's are for. Not everyone that uses a router is running a business. Some of us just want to play games. :)

You're welcome :)

Now, routers tend to have problems with multiple people playing the same game at the same time anyway (they can only forward the ports to one machine at a time) so even if you didnt have to DMZ you still probably wouldnt be able to play online together. However, you can have a network game together (you vs her or you and her together vs CPUs) or you can play the game at different times (just change the DMZ to include your computer or her computer depending on who wants to play).

Not the best answer, Im afraid, but thats the way it is :(

As an aside, you should activate windows firewall at the very least - I know you can always format your computer if you get infected by something but that is rather inconvenient and the windows firewall shouldnt interfere with DoW or Generals...if it does interfere then just turn it off whilst gaming.
