Thought it may be worthy of your mention that the public beta of DoWRebirth Codex edition has been released, it is a mod I have had a very very small part in (testing) but can assure you it's very good. :D
It is an attempt to bring the game much closer to the tabletop and as such a lot of it has been revamped. Weapons are all standardised, a bolter on a scout does the same as a bolter on a marine. Equally armour is done similaly, if it has a 4+ save in the TT it has a armour class with all other 4+ saves.
It also balances very well, increases the benefits one can reap from micro and good army compesition and increases the options available to all players massively. There are models, and Mirageknight (the mod leader and Mastermind behind it) has tried to only include finished ones. More will follow in later versions.
In this version are Chaos Termies and a Chaos Land Raider. New Ork vehicles, and new SM tanks.
However this is a multiplayer mod primarily so you may want to come visit the FPL irc channel (follow the instructions in my signature) to organise some games, there are plenty of people ther willing to play Rebirth.
Here is the link to the download. Have fun :)
[edit] dodgy link, proper one to return shortly
Have any problems post them in the Rebirth thread

Tankyou very much, and Enjoy :bunny:
Edit: Ps this requires WA I'm afraid (you should see the new modded Baneblade it is EVERYTHING you would expect of a superheavy tank) and 1.41.

Have you considered requesting a custom AI from the AI mod team? I would love to play, but generally lack the time/bother/connection stability to do so online.

The AI is in this version and it plays better than in previous betas apparently, so it's worth a look. Thudmiester has not been contacted to help as of yet(I can't rule out the possibility at a later date assuming Mirage wants/needs his help and he is willing), I know Excedrin has been involved helping with the AI so it will put up a fight I'm sure :)

Sounds interesting.
But do you retain the need to have a 'base?'. This all sounds interesting, but pre-deployed armies should be the goal for anyone trying to bring DoW closer to the TT version.
Still, I'll give it a look. Do you also plan on doing the Tau/Necrons when they are released?

The gameplay dynamics of requisition and basebuilding I find pretty sound tbh, I think MirageKnight may want to make it turnbased and all at somepoint but you probably have to compromise at some point :P. Also that would probably require reidiculous amount of coding
The feel of the weapons is right in my oppion, lascannons ain;t not going to kill any infantry it hits like in DoW :).

Don't worry about the AI, it will definately fulfil your need for decent opponents, Orks especially.
As far as Tau and Necrons (presuming it is them) Mirage IS most definately intending to apply his twisted brand of genius to them the moment he's able to;
someone has to do Tau and Necrons right ;)

thats true, the current tau mod is pretty much worthless aside from nice models. Always bad when some idiots don't feel like knowing the army they intend to mod.

I wouldn't say that Piccolo... that thing's still pre-beta. The guys I've seen from the mod are pretty hard-core Tau fans, but they've got to answer to their fans a little bit and release SOMETHING (even if they haven't even done building textures yet). Give it time, and they won't disappoint you.
On the other hand... the news of the new expansion featuring Tau would be enough to make me give up completely. Kind of like how the Winter Assault expansion killed most of the Imperial Guard mods...

actually no I don't have to give them any credit on balance. I tried to get involved with that mod when it started but was told I didn't know anything about tau and that they knew everything. The pre-beta they released shows that pretty clearly as they have over loaded it with units of their choosing and not ones that have any semblance of thier normal effectiveness.
As soon as I heard of the new expansion I was happy. I have alot more faith in Relic doing a good job on Tau than the group of fan-boys running the mod team.

Piccolo, when the new expansion comes out I'm sure Mirage would welcome some input from an experianced Tau player. Mirage's philosophy is keeping it as absolutely close to the codex as possible, which does mean however that he isn't willing to budge if you want something different from TT in there :P

Aye, I don't think Mirage meant any disrespect to the Tau mod when he said that, he was referring to the official expansion races, not the mod. I personally have really enjoyed playing the Tau mod in it's current state, even if I have no idea what I'm doing :p
@Tir: Different as in adding Chaos Attack Flamingos

Even having the weapons tweaked to better represent their TT performance is is alone a plus.
Turn-based though would take something away from the game. If there's an option between either one I'd choose Realtime...
When I think of the perfect 40K computer game, I think of something like the total war series except with a better interface.

When I think of the perfect 40k game, a perfect translation of the TT game comes to mind, with a nice interface and easy online play.
Reasonable, no? ;)

I think the DoW resorcing system is rather good to be honest, and yes total war would be nice, that element of DoW has been brought over. However it ahs been a bit simplified as to units now only require requisition, while buildings require power.
