I just got into WH40k and have not yet been into battle, im still building my army.
Ive started going to my local GW in Southampton to pick up a bit of knowledge.

I was wondering does this game play like strategitic computer games.
Do i build my chosen army (space marines) with separate groups, each consisting entirely of one of the following combat type :

heavy guns long range
heavy guns short range
Melee combat weapons
small arms/melee
Then obviously Dreadnaughts and other heavies.

Or...

Do i mix groups. Say one group would have flamers (short range) some melee type, a rocker launcher (long range) and melee/small weapons.

Any group/army types you can give me would be great.

dont mix and match weapons, keep the marines equipt for one specific battle feilds role and dont give them anything that they wont use effectivly.

so no giving devistater squads any close combat equip and other obvius things

You mix groups.

In RTS games you build/train each model one at a time but in 40K you buy a whole squad together. In the case of marines, squads tend to be between five and ten strong.

All the squad members come with the same weapon. In the case of tactical squads it's bolters. You then get the option to upgrade a few of them, but almost never all of them. To continue the same example, tactical squads are allowed one heavy weapon (longer range, more powerful), one special weapon (more effective than the bolter) and the sergeant has a whole host of upgrade options.

You keep going like this with different squad types until you have an army.

Come back when you've seen how badly Chaos Havocs get their name mauled. THEN we'll talk about spelling issues.

As long as you don't get a job programming spell-checkers or something then it'll probably be OK.
