I always knew Microsoft would someday make a handheld to counter the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. The name of the handheld is "Origami". Look out sony and nintendo! :handbag: I also heard you can play halo! Its a bit larger than the PSP. You can draw stupid stuff and hook it up on your keyboard!

Do you think Microsoft is gonna be better than PSP or DS?

My bet it will just be on par with them. Its too large to possibly be as mobile as a PSP but it has some other advantages and also being made latter alowing it to take advantage of better techs.

This is a different product than the PSP or DS. In terms of gaming, I think that Microsoft is late because Sony and Nintendo have already saturated the market with their products, and I doubt that many people will buy this product for the sole purpose of playing halo on the run. The other functions don't look too promising over a laptop, anyway.

The Handheld is basicly a super tiny laptop. Very similar to a computer, but i think it would be cheaper. Xbox was just a Downgraded PC in disguise. I do think it is better than PSP and DS.

i dont think this competes in the same realm as the Nintendo DS and PSP at all, rather it's just your bottom of the line laptop repackaged into something smaller and hopefully cheaper to satisfy those mobile needs.
Someone needs a PS job. Some guy is throwing a grenade, then switch to a scene of a black hole forming. Replace the grenade with ecks bocks.

You can're really compare it to a DS or PSP as that is not it's intended market. It is more of a tablet PC. Yes, you can play games on it, but I doubt it's anything like a DS or PSP.
lmao having to post through a proxy is aggravating, though they haven't caught or banned my IP yet. I thought I was under the affect of a general armistice, but I got banned from /d/ without the usual "USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST". 4chan takes too much time anyways.
.../d?
What the fuck kind of hentai were you looking for, Xboxes shoved up a girl's privates?
Would this new Xboy go in /H instead, or is it still to HUEG?

this will most likely fail. they attemped a "ipod killer" years ago called the portable media player.. sales sucked and it was scraped.
now their trying it again. they think they wil succeed this time after learning about the mistakes made last time (ie, do not make the entire marketing campaign about making apple look evil) but its still planned to be the ipod killer.

Ah yes, I've read about this. This is more on the lines of a "portable laptop". A "handheld Alienware", at best described. Like the previous posters, I agree. It's not in the same boat as the DS or the PSP, just like how those 2 other portables are targeting differnt markets. This little beauty will challenge Laptops and PDAs instead and I bet you it'll be better than those two. ;)
And as to why it's running Halo, don't forget Halo came out for the PC.
In other related news...Spore for the handhelds. :)

So...It's too large to be pocketable, but too small to be a laptop, thus unfit for random carrying around like a PSP or Game Boy, as well as unfit for displaying console games? I'll pass.

This origami model shown is a year old concept, Microsoft has a viral marketing page at http://www.origamiproject.com/1/ and from the video that was up on the web on the weekend, this is hardly a portable gaming rig. It is a ultra portable computer (UMPC - Ultra Mobile PC) and in this case is similar to a small Tablet PC. And from what other UMPCs are coming out, it would seem likely that it will be thinner, but still sport the 6-7 inch screen. It is also not clear at this point if MS will have it's own hardware, or if they will push a Spec like they do with PocketPCs, or both.
To my understanding, it is to be Vista based, have MCE abilities, 3G connectivity (EVDO et cetera; optional) Wifi, bluetooth and 3D capability (as shown by the kid playing Halo, which is a game that takes some power to render)

yeah... its just a smaller tablet pc. think along the lines of a notebook for students. its small enough for that kind of thing, but large enough to be useful in those situations. really not a handheld gaming platform.

I dont understand people, why would you buy something that will most likely only play yesterdays games, to me it a waste of money, same with PSP. Their basically the console little brother, not much different in terms of gameplay. DS FTW!

I'd wait for the PSP's price to come down first as right now it is pricier than the PS2, especially the games since they cost more than a PS2 game at the moment.

As said, I dont see this being a games device at all but rather a portable laptop.
I don't understand why people think smaller is better. I can't stand watching something on a small screen. Like watching "Lost" on your ipod. Headaches and blurred vision for everyone in a decade. I had a PSP (sold it on ebay) I never made it through Spider-man 2. Game quality and quantity was low too.
Gaming on a small screen is different than just watching something.

We've learned a little more about Microsoft's Origami Project, and as always, we're here to share. After this morning's HTML source confirmation that Origami will indeed be a "Mobile PC running Windows XP," we have one more detail to add: our sources confirm that Origami will run XP Tablet PC Edition. A minor distinction, perhaps. But let's not forget that it wasn't very long ago that Microsoft refused to grant Tablet licenses to PC makers whose boxes had specs not dissimilar to those rumored to be planned for Origami. What else have we learned? Well, we don't mean to disappoint those of you who've become enamored of the box you've been peeping in the Origami video, but according to our sources, the actual device will look more like the basic black box that Microsoft showed off at WinHEC last year (pictured above). We don't necessarily consider that a bad thing, though we will be curious to see how well we can work with a machine with virtually no hardware controls. One thing is certain: we'd better carry around a supply of tissues to wipe off all the fingerprints. Maybe the first Origami accessory should a swanky leather carrying case for us to put them in.
Also, pricepoint is around $500 -$800 (rumored)

It's a 7 inch screen, which would be great for watching movies and shows on the go

Okay, sure, but how are you going to play movies on this thing? In fact, how is input in general supposed to work? I see no visible buttons.

It's a mini tablet, you have a pen, and MS does have pen gesture patents, this is just speculation of the appleth degree, but perhaps they actually impemented the gestures? That picture is a year old anyways. It is likely that Origamies will have buttons like the one in the video that was leaked on the weekend, or like full sized tablets do.
There was also a keyboard addon shown in the video
EDIT: for those that did not see the promo video, here it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV1WGDW37c0&search=project%20origami)

I don't know why people like DS. It seems like a total gimmick to me. The games arn't that appealing either. Thinking the Origami and the PSP are inferior because they play older Xbox/PS2 style games? They are handhelds. Having a game like Halo on a handheld would be amazing. Regardless of how old the game is. Go back to your sidescrolling 2D games and Mario on a trampoline.

Well, you have understand that the two handhelds appeal to two different markets. One appeals to those looking for something fresh/weird/quirky and old school goodness, while another caters to those looking for a portable media centre, or is perfectly content with traditional games. This is no longer a simple market where you can just target the main demographic and leave it at that.
Ports however, are undesirable for EITHER platform because chances are the big brother consoles are better than the handheld versions (King Kong, Madden, Splinter Cell,). However, said games that were made based on the series and were developed from the ground up are exceptions. (Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, SOCOM and Wipeout Pure are a few examples of.)
So in conclusion, neither of the two portables are going anywhere whether you like it or not.
Edit: Plus, you must be a bore if you don't think an adventure game where you play as a lawyer is entertaining. :D (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney)

why does everyone think this has to be a game machine at all? It would serve as an ebook reader, portable GPS unit, notepad and best of all, it fits in you bag. You can take it around the house and use it to control all your media devices, or stream videos on you LAN to it.

Heaven forbid people go without a screen in front of their faces. A long car trip with no TV. Oh the horror!!!
There is this old device, invented hundreds of years. It is made of paper. You have to think of the pictures and sounds yourself so it may be too much work. :read:
Microsoft is making a great move. They know many people hate the idea of being alone with their own mind.
Hell maybe I will buy one.

my first thought when i found out about origami was "that'd make a sweet sat nav system", I guess I drive too much :drive:
If it is as advertised i may well end up getting one. I'm using a dell axim at the moment as my mobile pc. Sure it does everything from sat nav to word documents but it isn't as intergrated with windows as i'd like. For instance if i type up a word document on a pc then drop it onto the pda, i loose all the formatting, hell i'd be tempted to buy one of these if it fixes that problem alone.
For one thing i think it'd reduce a lot of paperwork for a lot of people, especially with it having handwriting recognition. It'd make my job easier by a quite significant ammount.

Have you ever tried to read a book in a moving vehicle? It's somewhat difficult on bumpy terrain, and you can get motion sickness from it. :yech:
Sure I have Verrin. I have also looked out the window at the real world. I have gone whole days without a video screen also. :omg: My book comment is not for car entertainment only.
*edit*
I guess I'm the only person here you thinks there is something wrong with the idea of having a screen flashing around us all the time. I suppose you will take the origami with you on the crapper to be spared the nightmare of no visual stimulation.

yeah ive actually noticed watching video doesnt do the same nasty things in a car that reading a book likewise would do
PDA: ~$300
Tablet PC: ~$2000
Origami: $800
when the tablet pc concept was introduced, Gates pushed it like there was no tomorrow. my guess is that origami is an extension of this.
imo, he won't give up. if memory serves, most of his keynotes since then have had some kind "flat form" interactive pc, the most recent being able to access personal information at an airport with the screen projected on a table.
as for GPS: Streets & Trips + USB GPS reciever + USB ports on Origami = portable nav unit.

phogo, your not entirely on your own, i spend weeks on end with minimal exposure to 'screens', well except for my digital camera and the odd email home, its called a holiday :D
I personally don't see the problem with having screens around, after all they display information in a conveniant format. Can't beat a good book tho, i did once try reading a book on the pc but its not quite the same.
Anyway, back on topic. I can see this style of computer becoming more popular than and eventually replacing both the laptop and the pda. Its lighter, cheaper and more portable than a laptop and it's more user freindly than a pda.
