How do I make the speed of online games in WA to go faster than how it is now (If you want to know how bad it is lets play a game). I have my graphics turned down all the way and the speed still gives me nightmares. I even have high speed internet.

The other problem is that I cant play a game with my friend that lives nearby. It gives the host not found message when either of us try to play in each others games. The other stupid thing is that we both have xbox live and cant play together on that either. Xbox live gives us cannot connect to game sorry.

I would really like to know what in His name is going on here. We both can play other people on both of them but not together. :wtf2: Any ideas?

Ok here's the problem, while your CPU is more than capable of handling large battles, your graphics card is not. You have an integrated graphics controller which uses system memory for its video memory and uses CPU-heavy tricks to emulate hardware transform&lighting.
If you play a skirmish, does the game slow down as well?

The only time Ive really noticed the game slow down on skirmish was when the shadow was on its highest and when Im playing the total war mod with a ton of units, almost the limit. But the campaign for WA ran EXTREMELY slow.

Im getting tired of being kicked out of every game I play. Like 7 games Ive been kicked out of so far. I can play steel legion mod all the way through just fine but when I play regular WA it lags horribly at the beggining. What can I do about this?

Well lemme try another analogy this time to explain your connection problem, maybe this will be more on par. If you ever worked in a business, you might be familiar with the telephone systems they have where you call one number to reach the company and dial additional numbers to reach specific people. Imagine your house as this company with one phone number (IP, we'll call it HOME #) to the outside, and each machine hooked up with their own extensions (we'll call it COMPUTER #). Now, let's go down one more level and picture each computer on the network as its own company with one external number (COMPUTER #), and each individual applications on your computer have their own extensions on top of it (the port, call it APPLICATION #).

Now, let's say DoW, a Ssolrac's Computer Company employee wants to play with his friends. DoW picks up the phone and uses specific line # (port) to the outside to dial his friend's number, which unfortunately, only consists of his friend's HOME # and APPLICATION # for DoW. If you've been following my analogy so far, you'll notice that this setup is perfectly fine should his friend only have one computer in his house, but with multiple computers at his friend's house, the real way to dial to his running DoW should've been -> HOME # -> COMPUTER #-> APPLICATION #, but the telephone system does not permit dialing it this way. Now you see that once we reach the friend's house, the system is confused as to which computer you want, as all computers can have the APPLICATION # extension. This is where you setup what's called 'port forwarding', that effectively says any calls to APPLICATION # 50 for example, goes to my machine, extension 192.168.2.101.

Now, without doing forwarding, the only work around is to have a third party to manage the connection, in our case gamespy. Recall that it's perfectly fine for anyone with any setup to dial to a house where there is only one computer, Gamespy's servers are like this, so you can establish a connection. Now, if anyone wants to call you but they obviously cannot get past your COMPUTER # problem, they'll connect to Gamespy, and ask Gamespy to relay the message to you that so and so wants to connect. Having received the msg, you then use another line and dial the friend instead and voila, you're both now connected.

Only problem? If your friend's in a similar situation as you are, whcih I'm betting he is, he's got the COMPUTER # indirection too, so even if you know he wants to connect to you, neither of you can connect to each other since you cannot specify the COMPUTER # (even if you do know it) on the internet. This is why port forwarding is the only way you can fix it, after which you'll pass the network test you took.

(the other fix is of course, giving each computer in the house dedicated lines so you can have multiple lines to a house, but just as there are limits to a 7 digit phone #, there are way more machines out there now than there are numbers, so until IPv6 gets here, you'll have to live with extensions

and just for the curious, there is one hack to get around this - knowing each other's external IP and port #, they could simultaneously start sending packets to each other, and the NAT would then assume each is a reply to the msg sent and let it through)

Is this for high speed internet too? I do have two computers but the laptop cannot play dow because of its physical memory. My friend only has one though. An xbox 360 doesnt count as a computer does it? Because we both have one. I dont have to open any ports do I?

Both of us have the same type of internet but they are different from each other. On xbox live I can find games in matchmaking in a few minutes, but his rarely ever finds games to play. Sometimes he is even disconnected from live. Same thing for the computer on dow. My games are very very slow even when my graphics are all the way down, but for him he could have his graphics on medium and still run better than me.

well, how is your connection setup? since you have more than one computer (and the 360 counts as one), how is the connection shared? are they plugged into a router which then plugs into the high speed modem, or do you guys use a switch / hub?

ISPs rarely give more than one IP to a customer (you'd have to pay more for those), so chances are you are behind a router, which of course means you'll have the aforementioned problems. People have reported that with Universal Plug and Play enabled on the routers it works without having being manually configured, so you might try that provided you know how to access and configure your router.

I use a router connected to a high speed modem, but he uses a high speed router only. That means he has to switch which system is connected to the modem at one time. I dont know about the universal plug and play thing.

it sounds like your connections should work just fine, particularly games hosted by him even in direct connect. Something else could be the culprit with his problem, but either way I would say make use of his xbox live subscription and call tech support and his ISP and complain about the frequent problem. They might blame your computer, but if the xbox has the same problem then there's certainly nothing you could do especially if you are just plugging straight into the modem.

As for your slow games, if you have the manual somewhere or know the model of your router, you can google for the manual online and figure out how to mess with the configuration settings. My neighbor's bittorrents kill the connection not because he's using all the bandwidth but because he's sending too many UDP packets and the firewall can't handle inspecting it all, so that's probably the first place you wanna look short of getting a new video card in case it is the video.

You can also test it out by plugging your computer directly into the modem and playing games online, if that still does not fix your problem then it's either your connection or your computer.
