I just today ran into a problem where a ship seems to have hit some sort of barrier at 19 hardpoints. ANy hardpoint in addition to the 19 will make the hod not work properly. Is there some reason for this?

You can definatly have more then 19....
Evils ships have hundrends on a couple Take a look at the Ship files if you dont beleve me...
I've definatly played around with ships that ended up with more then that personally.

Yes, but have you even run into a barrer like this, whether it be your 19th hardpoint or your 58th hardpoint?

How are you addind hardpoints? I have noticed that if any of youre hardpoints are not named properly they dont work.

I have pretty extensive experience with adding hardpoints via HardEd, so it wouldn't be an operator error, especially since I double check these things.

might be a harded problem, maya can add past 256 hardpoints and still export the ship, don't know what the actual cap is.
