View Full Version : Pulling the News Feed off RelicNews

Hi Guys,
Not sure if this is the ideal section for this request, so it may need moving.
One thing I'd like to ask is permission to use your news feed/rss feed thingy to place on our clan homepage at www.waclan.co.uk. Obviously we'll give you credit, it'll save me some work updating our news as you'll see, and also get you some linkage and interest :)
I'll fathom the technicalities out, we would ideally like to only Pull the Dawn of War news though, and i'm not sure this is separated out or able to do, without pulling all of the Relicnews.
Thanks,
ArT
It's the right section. :)
By the way, nice site, I really enjoyed your forums (http://www.waclan.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=575). Maybe if we let you do this you don't give advice on how to circumvent bans anymore?

LOL! I'll look into the news thing, I coulnd't find a set url from which to pull it, thanks :)
Good old Gravy, he's a crazy dude hehe. Have you seen his tabletop posts? Some of the longest posts I've ever seen.
Not that bad an idea to restrict acces to the forums. Slightly too late I'm afraid.
Ok, no more link. Just keep in mind that we know.

Not exactly rocket science is it? Any google on changing your ip can easily allow a banned member access to a forum.
Personally I didn't think it that big of an issue, but have moved the thread regardless. If you want to keep displaying this information though then fair enough, thats your call.

Asking to use our feed while condoning nasty (false, from what I can see) comments about our staff is sorta rich, you must admit.

No offence meant, tbh that's an old post from a while back, one of our members seemed a little bitter at being banned and vented a little, its was completly forgotten about by me to be honest.
It's not the thoughts of our guys as a whole at all, and I apologise if you've got that impression. You're probably aware we have several active regular posters here on Relicforums. It's wasn't thought to be restricted I guess as we have a small number of visitors/viewers. It was just a rant post that probably should have been removed or closed at the time. No hard feelings I hope.

I do not think that means what you think it means.
I have no hard feelings, being separate from the matter, but I'd just like to point out that it's appropriate to say that an offense had slipped your mind when you were the one offended and not when you were the one partially accountable for the offense. Saying an offense has been forgotten is a mechanism for forgiveness, not a mechanism for apology.
This is not to denigrate your sincere attempt to make amends. I'm just saying. The former use indicates magnaminous failure to hold a grudge. The latter use indicates a general insensitivity to others.
Ok to get this back on track (sorry, I know I derailed it in the first place), I'll ask the relicnews.com staff about this and we'll get back to you. However thanks for asking and not just ripping the news.

I thought the whole reason for RSS was so that other sites could syndicate your news?

Depends on how the site chooses to license it, Corsix. Many sites (including my own) provide RSS feeds for individual use via RSS readers. I would be very pissed (and likely file a copyright claim with the ISP) if someone's website started syndicating my content without permission.

Perhaps you can show a sample of how you'd like to use it ArTizan?
IE: Is it going to be your main news list or are you going to have a list of RN news articles on the side that when clicked direct your readers to Relicnews.com?

Well, ideally I was hoping for a news feed very similar to what is already present(but this is entered manually); the centre area here - http://www.relicnews.com/archives/category/dawn-of-war/ . I guess this would look very similar to the news displayed on your DoW homepage, but a quote above along the lines of 'Dawn of War News Provided by Relicnews:' or something, with the links etc all remaining identical. That would be the ideal solution, not sure if I may be able to alter some background colours etc to fit it into the site more.
As you mentioned though, if something like that wouldn't be feasible then possibly just the news healines in place of the current news, and then the links going to your full news articles would suffice.

Yup, we'd be perfectly happy with you listing just the headlines linking to our articles proper.
Not so happy posting the entire article at your site :-)

I'll ask the relicnews.com staff about this and we'll get back to you.

Is this the final verdict? :comment:

Is there a spearate 'DoW only' news feed I could use? I can only seem to find one overall feed and can't find any links to a DoW feed.
Thanks,
ArT

Nah, you just didn't know that putting /feed/ after the URL on any WordPress site will get you a feed for that article, category, etc.

Well, that's not completly true. If the wordpress site has the ability to rewrite the URL into the "friendly" format, you can.
If it cannot (because it is using a Windows Hosting company and they did not find and use an IIS plugin to allow the friendly url) then it is something like http://www.domain.com/?feed=rss2

Yes, but anyone using query string URLs doesn't deserve to have theirs called a "site". :p
