View Full Version : [v1.19] Engineers flamethrowers vs Vehicle mounted flamethrowers

I have tried both in many games, and no matter what it seems to be very clear that engineer flamethrowers are very efficient at dispensing death. When 2 Pioneers can burn to dead 6 riflemen with medium cover (yellow shield) while being shot at standing with no cover (Red shield), something doesn't seem right.
In comparison it seems all other vehicle flamethrowers, both Axis and Allied are much more less effective - it's almost as if the infantry and vehicle version flamethrowers were reversed - is it just me?
I FEAR infantry with flamethrowers, yet I can get away from vehicle mounted ones, what is up with that?

The Sherman croc strikes me as being frighteningly good at what it's supposed to do. Keep in mind that the croc's flamethrower takes longer to bring to bear on a target, giving a player time to retreat a targetted squad.
I've found that vehicle mounted flamethrowers are best used at flushing squads out of cover or buildings.

the axis apc upgrade doesnt seem nearly as effective as the pioneer version.. ive seen allied troops actually move towards it to keep warm on long cold nights - rather than running in fear.
i might have lied a little there..

According to PCoH the pioneers do slightly more damage.

The only acual difference to me is the armour type. They do about the same damage in my experience, no MAJOR difference. For the engi/pio flamers, all I do is throw a nade onto them. Really, flammers of all types should only be used on units in heavy cover or buildings (especially buildings!)

I keep finding myself in a lot of hurt often in situations like 2 full riflemen squads with BARs and in medium cover can NOT take out 1 Pioneer squad before they charge in and burn most of the squad to death, now if it is intended for 50 ammunition to kill 12 riflemen (it has happened) with only 2 Pioneers then that's how it is, but if this is not intended then obviously something is out of balance.
I have yet to try out the Engineer version of the Flamethrowers, I have been playing Allies mostly since v1.17 but plan on getting some more significant testing done soon on them, this is not an Axis vs. Allied balance issue as opposed to cheaper early game upgrades being better than midgame vehicles and/or upgrades.
Anyone else have more feedback or experience with all types of flamethrowers? The reason this came to light for us was playing vs. the A.I., which loved to RUSH you with multiple pioneer squads with flamethrowers :madashel:
