View Full Version : 'Quick reply to message' button only available on relic blue theme

I just discovered while working with a friend who also frequents the boards that the 'Quick reply to this message' button does not show up on any theme except the Relic Blue one. This obviously makes quoting a person and replying to their message difficult.
Is there a way to do this using the other themes I'm not aware of or is this an intended issue?

flave: yes, you put their name and a colon before your message, so they know you're talking to them.

Damnit, why is that thing still available on Relic Blue.

uber all it does is open up the quick reply box and shoots you down to the bottom of the page so you can post in it.
It's not the quote button.

I find the quick relpy enormously handy myself.

RIGHT, MY MISTAKE.
(I like that button, it's helpful in threaded view IIRC)

Yep, like the button too, very nice for quoting people.

I also enjoy the button, especially for nested quotes. In fact, I don't think there is any other good way to quote a particular post like that.
So is it possible to add it to the other themes? I like the darker themes, but definetly don't want to lose that nice functionality.
I always hit "end" to get to the bottom of the page :/

The point of this thread wasn't that I can't hit the quick reply button on other board themes, my point was that I can check the 'Quote message in reply?' box to have the person's quote show up my post if I use the quick reply button. It's the only way to quote a person's post in-line on the forums and it's not available on any of the other board themes.
Ion: I realize I can just type the person's name with a colon (see, I just did it! :P), but I like quoting the text so other people know specifically what post and points I'm addressing in my post.
It's certainly not a huge issue by any means as I can just use relic blue, but it would be a nice thing to have in all the board themes so I could choose which I wanted and not lose any functionality.

We removed it because people were quoting entire huge posts to reply with "lol, I agree". It should probably be removed from Relic Blue.
You can use the [quote] tag to do what it does, we just want you to do it manually so some thought goes into its use.

That's all well and good ceej, but using that method to stop the abuse also penalizes those of us that use the button correctly.
Is it possible to make a forum rule against quoting large chunks of text instead of simply removing the button? For the aforementioned reasons it's an incredibly efficient tool for quoting a post so it's easier to reply to and I think it's unfair to simply remove the functionality because of a few idiots.
I suppose removing the button does lessen the work load of the mods because they don't have to enforce the "no quoting large posts" rule, but at the same time it seems like it's the easy way out and it sucks for everyone who uses the option in a worthwhile manner.

Another rule like that would only end up with a disproportionate amount of warnings given out to otherwise well-behaved members of these Forums. Now that Dark Crusade is imminent, it could also prove to be a huge hassle for the mods to deal with.

We already have a rule like that, it says "do not abuse the quote function" (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=5710#11).
Yes, the quick reply buttons can be useful. Yes, sometimes using the quote function is ok. But we are in a constant cycle of growth at the moment and a lot of new users who don't know the particular rules and etiquette of this forum, and to cut down on our workload (warning for and fixing excesssive or unnecessary use of the quote function) the quick reply buttons do not appear on most skins. If you want to use quick reply, use the Relic Blue skin. We simply don't have the time to do everything we'd like, such as walking every new member through the nicities of what we expect from them in terms of posting style. Adding quick reply buttons to all the skins is, as I'm sure you understand, a secondary priority and one that might even prove detrimental to our efforts were it to be implemented.

the function will stay on relic blue as it's the "base skin" I use for any thing new.
the function will stay off all the other skins because it's evil.
