View Full Version : New post icons

I am going to test out some new post icons on the forums.
I think these will differentiate thread content at a glance instead of trying to figure out what a thread title topic is trying to convey.
If this proves to be a workable idea then Post icons can also be made Forum specific so we could have topic icons just for each forum. Meaning in the HW2 forums you could have a range of icons that would announce a toipic to be about a specific race or mission or idea or tactic straight away without having to decifer the thread topic.
The icons are large but i bieleive that if they are used often enough the column they use will fill up and it won't look so empty, as it will when they are first used.

"these are too big, they screw up the forum"
:bigwave:
maybe if they were to the right of the topic?

lol
that happens alot :)
Currently I only want these used in the GD. So please only use them there.
If you can think up any more categories then post them here too.
I agree with mecha - right of the topic is less intrusive.

now i can see a lot of them
hmm
reminds me of the byzantium forums :yech:
The different colours kind of ruin the refinement and style of the homeworld skin. It is a good idea though, perhaps to the right and neutral colours?

I think they're neat, and a good idea.
Maybe some for "Good News", (edit: needs a new smiley --> )"Bad News" and possibly "Space" (the latter one kind of fits in Science)?
A  one for "Dumb" might be cool too.

right of the topic is less intrusive but would be less intuitive (hehe, I couldn't resist).
Most people glance at the icon to see which of the threads they've replied in have been updated, that's the same place this thing should go IMO

They are across the different skins mecha so it's unfortuanate they mess up somewhat the HW skin.
The idea is to have easily recognisable and different colors so that you can see, for instance, all the funny threads at once on the forum.
I think I'll keep them just to the GD atm, I've added a hack so they can only be selected on GD anyway, so it'll restrict they're use in there for the moment.

I've just started to change the backgrounds on all the icons to black, and making the text a different color.
It blends in better with the HW skin and doesn't make the left hand column stick out as much.
I'll add and change the rest tomorrow.

They
1. are to big (sorry)
2. Don't fit the theme (i am using, which is the purple one), so maybe make different ones for different themes.
3. Ugly (who needs this?, we can't read anymore now?, dont the subjects themselves explain the thread better then a "WAR" icon next to it??...ARE WE m0r0ns??)
4. load slow :D

Too busy, clashes with classic skin. Good idea, once it gets ironed out.

Personally I've never liked having icons of any kind denoting what sort of topic has been posted - the forum the thread is posted in, plus the title of said topic, should be enough.
These things just seem like an unnecessary eyesore that make it harder to see what I do want to see - namely, whether I've read the topic or not, whether it's been locked, etc.
If you have to have them, please stick them over on the right where I can ignore them more easily.

I think we all fear change :D
I'd leave them up for a few weeks at least and then decide, maybe people will get used to them.

If they weren't so damn garish maybe I could get used to them.
These new icons totally wreck the suspension of disbelief on the forums!

Pants, I dont really need a text blurb next to a picture to tell what the picture indicates :/
:) "SMILEY"
:( "SAD SMILEY"

well looking at them last night at home, I don't really like them much either.
do we need post icons at all? and if we do what ones to use?
there's over 200 smilies now installed so it's hard to figure out which to use. I will nuke the large ones in use now, I think they are useful, but getting it to fit with the forums just won't work. Nice idea, hard to implement.
So do we use post icons at all or not ppls?

I think the original batch of Icons struck a good balance. They were unobstrusive, yet had enough variety for people to use.
These current ones are more disruptive than helpful IMO.

nope no such hack.
I liked em. Put em back.
Much better if the idea could be used for filter options for threads too!

I liked the idea , but the icons were a bit large smaller icons with a legend to explain the meaning would do nicely instead. Add the ledgend to the posting guidelines.

having a legend wold ruin the goal of intuitiveness.

If you look at any forum, only about 1 in 5 ppl actually *use* a topic icon for their posts... so any new icons wuld prolly be ignored anyhows.
More smilies!
