View Full Version : An Organized Debate - Rules, Description & Signup Thread

This is the first attempt at having an organized debate in The Study. There will be two teams, which will debate a pre-selected topic. Everyone gets a chance to suggest a topic (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?p=1808144), we will then vote and decide which one we'll be discussing. If you are interested, sign up in this thread.

Signups and topic suggestions will remain open for one week, until Monday, Oct. 16th, ~1800 GMT.

The Rules:

1. The debate thread will run until (to be announced), at which point it will be locked.

2. If you wish to participate in the debate, sign up in this thread.

3. If you wish to suggest a topic for the debate, post in this thread (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?p=1808144).

4. You can only participate in this debate if you have signed up beforehand.

5. Be advised that people will be assigned to a team randomly. The team's stance on the issue at hand may not coincide with "your" position. If the topic is conservatives vs liberals, you may end up in the conservative camp even if you consider yourself a liberal and vice versa.

6. Team members are encouraged to coordinate with other members of their team using PMs, IRC or other means of communication.

7. Posters will be held to a high standard. This includes proper punctuation and spelling, properly thought-out posts, and materials to back up your claims. This also means no trolling, no personal attacks and no sarcastic one-liners. Anyone who violates these rules may be removed from the debate at any point. In short, if you fuck up you hurt your team.

8. This is a test run, if people are interested in furthering their debate skills by means of this exercise we will do it more often. (We may also do an actual debate contest, at some point, depending on how this goes).

9. Courtesy must be shown to all other members at all times.

I really doubt that I have the communication skills to benefit the debate, however I will be watching the contest closely.

Perhaps it may be a good idea to limit the number of responses individual teams can make? This could make people take more time into their posts and may highten the standards of debate.

I'd like to give this a try. I need to polish up my debate skills, this seems like a good opportunity to do so.

Ok cool, this is shaping up nicely.

Some more info: The teams will be assigned at random, as indicated above. I will write your names on pieces of paper and draw them in random order, or if I find an online "create two teams out of a bunch of names" generator I'll be using that.

In order for the whole thing to remain fair I will not be participating in the debate, but I will be moderating it.

I'd be interested in an organized debate where I did get to defend what my opinion was. Count me out if it's going to be randomly assigned.

If there comes a topic that I'm interested in, can I join in discussion with the team that is supporting what I think, to give them advice, (given that I did not post anything myself) or would that be against the rules?

Ok guys, I know signups were originally going to be accepted for a week, but we already have more than 30 participants. We obviously didn't anticipate that the idea would be this popular (I blame the idiot who posted the porn sticky).

Anyway, in order to keep this somewhat organized, we'll be going with who we have. If this goes well we'll be doing it more frequently, so those of you who haven't had a chance to sign up yet will get a chance then.

Topic suggestions will remain open for a while, so go ahead and suggest stuff.
