Hi, I love Dawn of War and am interested in trying to get involved in the TT side of things.

While I like pretty much all the factions, my favorite by far is Imperial Guard. I love the idea of regular people fighting against genetically engineered supermen and alien horrors.

What exactly am I looking at as far as getting started as IG? Is their playstyle really as it seems to be ("When in doubt, throw more men at it!") ? And, how hard will they be for a newcomer to play effectively?

And, final question, how do I go about finding a retinue of folks to play with?

Have a look at the Index Tactica here (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=75002)

This has a bunch of articles about using the Imperial Guard. But yes, essentially the Imperial Guard approach to war-fare boils down to:

1. Victory through superior numbers
Throw enough units at it and it'll eventually crack. Plenty more where these guys came from.

2. If 1 doesn't work, throw lots of tanks at it instead.

But first things first. Go buy the codex and the rule book.
These items are essential. Then spent a lot of time looking at the codex and figuring out what kind of guard army you want.

Make up some lists.

Work out some core units (2 troops and an HQ to begin with) that will form the centre of your army. Get these and play some games.

Add more units as you get a feel for what you're playing.

Have fun! (That's an order)

my only advice for IG is that you will have a lot of painting on your hands, I have a huge SM army, and Huge Tau army. IG would run about 2x the number of models as a equally sized force. painting the same guy over and over can get pretty boring and tedious.

i would suggest a small 500point group, then ramp up. or create as much customization in the guard as you can, so each is unique, and each is piece you love painting

Painting such a tiny thing, it seems to me, will be a pain in the ass.

I hope I'm pleasantly suprised when i try it.

Heres a hint for guard. Take it slow. I started IG over the summer and I'm not even finshed building. Building +80 just for a 1000pts is mind numing enough!:gonemad: Take it easy and do what you want and not what you *need* and building your Guard will be easy (and enjoyable) as pie.:square:

The Imperial Guard are a great race to play but keep a few things in mind:

When it comes to fighting they rely on numbers and guardsmen aren't exactly the creme de la creme when it coems to infantry so be prepared to paint a lot of models.

Guardsmen can be tedious to paint. Small. Akward. Lots of them. that about sums it up.

That's why Armoured Companys are so alluring.
