Error Message:
Error 1305. Error reading from file: filename
If you're trying to install Company of Heroes from CD or DVD, you may receive this error message, where filename will be a specific file. There are a few possible causes of the error, including something such as your CD/DVD drive isn't configured correctly or you have an older or damaged version of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) installed.
Solution:
TRY STEP "M" FIRST.
A. Ensure that your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements of the program.
B. Check with the manufacturer of your computer, or its components, for updated Sound Card, Video Card and other relevant system drivers.
C. Download and install the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...113&product=drx
D. Check for important Windows updates and install if needed. You may go to www.windowsupdate.com for information.
E. Check the CD/DVD for dirt or scratches. Clean it and try again. If it's scratched badly, you might need another copy for installation.
F. If it's a DVD, are you trying to run it in a CD drive?
G. Try the CD/DVD in another computer's drive. If it works, the problem could be your drive. Try cleaning your drive with a cleaning disc.
H. Quit all unnecessary software that's running and try the installation. A program may be interfering with the installation.
I. Run a system profile to determine the brand or model of your drive and search Microsoft Knowledge Base (<http://support.microsoft.com>) for known drive or CD/DVD-recording software issues.
J. Check with your drive manufacturer to see if there are any firmware or driver updates for your drive. If so, install them and determine if this corrects the error.
K. If you have an IDE/ATA (Integrated Drive Electronics/Advanced Technology Attachment) drive, disable DMA (Direct Memory Access). DMA is a high-performance mode of data transfer that bypasses the CPU. Disabling it may let the drive complete installation without the error. Go to Control Panel, select Performance And Maintenance, and click System. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. Find IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and click the plus sign. (If you don't see your drive listed, you have a SCSI drive, which has no DMA option.) Double-click Primary IDE Channel and select the Advanced Settings tab. Under Transfer Mode, select PIO Only and click OK. Restart your computer and try the installation again.
L. Do you have multiple versions of your drive installed? If so, they could be conflicting with each other. Go to Control Panel and double-click System. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. Find the DVD/CD-ROM drives and click the plus sign to see what devices are installed. Right-click each and select Properties. Write down the information you find in this window. Restart Windows in Safe Mode. Go into Device Manager and expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives. If there are multiple instances shown under your drive, remove all that don't match the information you noted from the Properties Window by right-clicking and selecting Remove. Restart your computer and try the installation again.
M. Try a clean boot of your computer. This will start your computer with only the basic devices and services and might let you successfully install the software. Prior to installing/playing the game, click on START and then click on RUN, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then CLEAR the Process System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes. Note: You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box so just keep that the way it is.
Click on the Services tab, select the "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then click "Disable All".
Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
After the computer restarts, try installing / playing the game.
When you are done playing the game, return from a clean boot state:
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services.
