this is completely unacceptable, but yet i am not surprised. this stays true to conservative track record; yet sometimes i think these gov'ts seem to be more capitalistic than their american counterparts.

"These documents reveal that in Canada, the industry minister and his policy people appear unlikely to provide Canadian Internet users with similar protections to those being offered in the United States," Michael Geist, law professor at the University of Ottawa, said Tuesday.

that's like ultimate canadian BURN, right?

Big content providers like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are dead set against scrapping Net neutrality, saying it would
So it seems we the consumers have some political/financial muscle in our camp. This gives me hope that the internet will be preserved.

The very fact that microsoft supports net neutrality should give these other massive corporations serious pause.

Seriously, fuck ISPs, they have a lot of money, I do not. Let them try to find ways to make more money if they want by....oh I don't know.... providing good service to paying customers thus drawing more of them thus making more money?

But hey, I guess that's too damn tough a mission for companies that are supposed to provide a service to people....

Oh yea, and fuck Steven Harper, I hate that bastard.

I suspect much of this has to do with quality of service. QoS can be had from two opposite ends. One you pay the ISP to guarantee that your new TV over internet will work just like a regular tv. Or two, NBC pays your ISP to make sure that their new eNBC channel will work just like regular tv. Certainly there are regulations in place to prevent backbone owners to discriminate against smaller players, so I suspect if and when anyone does intend to violate net neutrality, there exists sufficient competition now (even in backwater Canada) that others will be willing to pay for a premium to counter.

On the other hand, it's well known that ISPs already cache much of the internet traffic in order to lessen the burden on their networks. Of course, what they cache and don't cache can already play a role in internet speeds. I suspect that unlike the US where telecos expanded like mad and was faced with overcapacity, it's not quite the same story in Canada.

"Oh my god, I cant believe it man, this is *sniffle sob sob* its like my futures on the line! *cry cry cry me a riiiveeerr*."

Seriously though, thats quite un-expected of Canada, even though I doubt any assault on net neutrality will see the light of day.

I know this exists for eastern canada, however, if this situation ever passes through I would not be surprised to see anti competitive actions being taken to 'lessen' (for example) Telus/Shaw traffic towards the east cost, simply because they could argue they did not pay enough for traffic priortization.

Hell, Torrent throttling is already an example of this. Rogers just recently began throttling again, with 'rumors' citing the decision being to have bandwidth preference on their voip service.

So you think if Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft wasn't coincidentally on our side, that our lobbyist-run gov't wouldn't do whatever the corporations wanted in a second?

We can always count on Google, Microsoft doesn't give a shit as long as people like them enough to buy Windows and browse the web in Internet Explorer, and Yahoo probably needs to see the doctor anyways.

And why do I always look at the time at these peculiar times? 22:22 this time.
