View Full Version : Minimum Requirements, pffft!

The game runs awesome with my AMD Duron 800 and a GeForce2 GTS with 512 SDRAM.

Sure the details are all at the lowest settings, and it's 800x600, but it still runs without severe lag (better than HW ran with a computer that was well over minimum specs at that time).

[edit] yeah yeah, I put it in the wrong forum....

Good news until my upgrade arrives next week. I'd just like to see it go with my 384Mb/GeForce 2 MX 64/Athlon 800.

I think it belongs in this forum, personally. It's talking about the GAME, not explicitly the demo.

my athlon xp 1800+
geforce2 gts
256mb ddram

handles the game at maximum details and 1280*1024. and after the table i was in the curse of the flying boxes category :D

2.6ghz athlon
1gig DDR ram
Radeon 9700

Runs smooth as silk at 1280*1024 with detail maxed :)

No, unless you did some good OCing, your athlon is NOT 2.6 ghz.. its a 2600 XP, so more like 2.1 Ghz or so.

My friends have reported the game runs pretty good on a 600mhz, GeForce 2. So maybe the min. requirements aren't very accurate. ;)

Agreed. I loaded it onto a system with a Duron 800, 256Mb and a Radeon 7500 - slap bang in minimum spec teritory in other words, and the game was very playable. Choppy at default settings, but switching things off make it work a lot better.

Not sure I'd like to try playing on a GF2MX, GF4MX420 or something of that kind, though :(

Relic has said that in SP the [below] min spec is actually do rather well. I am not sure in a 6 player MP game will the [below] min spec cut it.

:D I got about 2 frames per minute, methinks its time for a new graphics card, good to hear the music and start up screen tho.

I personally like the fact the minimum requirements are more like minimum no problem requirements. Sure the game may run on a Pentium III 500 MHz with 64 MB of RAM, but it could have problems. Who wants to play a choppy game?

He might have something like a 3200XP although i dont kno the actual clock speed of the top of my head.

There's a huge difference between a GF2 GTS and a GF2 MX... like 3 fold in some applications. I wouldn't hold out much hope retro. :P

Ran OK on my system.

K6-2 500mhz
256 100mhz SDRAM
GeForce 4 MX 420 w/ 64MB of RAM

Wasn't great but I was able to play both missions all the way through.

2.1 GHz is below 3200+ speeds, close to 3000+. My 2800+ runs at 2.08GHz. Speaking of which...

GAH the demo is running horribly for me. I have:

2800+
GeForce FX 5600 Ultra @ 450/950
512M PC2700 (usu. 360-400M free)

The entire opening scene is a slide-show, and any time I go anywhere near the Momship I get the same deal. Honestly I think it's the *sounds* that are doing it, ie the insanely loud and detailed engine sounds. Everything else runs relatively smooth, but I had to drop to 10x7 and turn Shadows to Medium, which evidently equals horribly ugly. I shudder to think what Low settings are.

tbh I was expecting to run at 1280x1024 with High Detail and possibly some AA/AF flawlessly, especially with the DX9 optimisations and all that. Ah well, I guess it's my fault, I'll just do some tweakage. But....just....gah.

That's really strange, motiv-8. My specs are an XP1700+ processor with a Leadtek GeForce 3 Ti200 and 512MB of PC2100 DDR RAM, and the game is perfectly playable for me at maximum detail @ 1024x768. Sure, it gets a little sluggish in places if I have shadows enabled, but I've never had an absolute slideshow like what you describe.

Wasn't there an official comment thread somewhere about Slideshow effect? I just read it this morning.

motiv-8: have you seen this thread yet: hw2 16 times slower (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14920) ?

I have AGP at 8X and the lastest nForce and Detonator drivers. :) :(

It's not the nForce or Detonator drivers you need to worry about (in this case) it's the motherboard drivers. Ensure you have the latest AGP drivers for your mobo from the manufacturers websight.

You may already have them - but it sounds awfully like the symptoms you'd get if you didn't. That said - what sort of motherboard do you have?

Well, Asus doesn't offer AGP drivers for me... I assumed that the new nForce chipset drivers covered that?

You know, they say the game isn't playable on a Xabre, but it is if you use tactical overlay. You can't see the ships, but you can see the effects just fine. :D (pretty explosions...)

Actually, I have it lucky over a friend of mine--he can see the ships just fine but the game crashes as soon as there's any combat. Which isn't the case for me. ;)

I think Relic/Sierra deserve a GREAT BIG KUDO for being honest about the minimal specs - at least for the first two missions. Granted, we're not seeing megafleets yet, but the game seems to run fairly smooth with some detail turned ON on my GeForce2MX/Athlon800/384Mb system.

I'm VERY pleased.

I don't think so (not 100%, mind you).

Did you check the thread Dragon-Lord pointed you at? And when you say you have AGP 8x, does that mean you did this

1. If you have an nVidia card, go to Control Panel/Display Options/Settings/Advanced and click on the GeForce tab. Once there you'll see AGP 2X, 4X, 8X, or AGP (PCI Mode). If you're in AGP mode, all is well. You can find this information in your ATI card settings as well, but location varies from card to card.

or just that the card supports AGP 8x?

Game runs very smooth, ie, as well as hw but with better graphics, on my p3 1ghz, 512mb ram 32 Mb Geforce 256 DDR machine (no new comp yet, soon, I keep telling myself as time passes).

Very minimal slowdown, most of the graphic options are on, and 1024*768. The engine is NOT a system hog by any modern standard. And as I have said before, load times are awesome.

Khet, maybe the minimum requirements are for smooth play in large MP games :)

At any rate, it's great to see a game that interprets minimum requirements as "what you need to have fun with the game" instead of "what you need to load the advertisements and title screen - barely". We don't get a lot of those lately, prompting many to treat the recommended requirements as the real minimum.

Eh, in any case there's nothing left to update.

I guarantee you that I'm running in AGP 8x. Guarantee.

Really though, after a little bit of tweaking the only problems I'm having are during cinematics. During actual play everything's relatively smooth, except when I get too close to the Tanis Derelict. Things slooooow dooown there.

Same problem here. I'm running:
AMD Athlon 1.33 Ghz
512 MB's DDR PC2700
GeForceFX 5600 (Non-Ultra) Soon to be a Radeon 9500 Pro.

Runs fine everywhere, except when I get close to the big ships.. things get slow there... But, nothing that's not easy to overcome.
