Alright, what the hell is with all the people? I mean yeah, Homeworld 2 kicks a boat load of ass, but 829 people?
Penny Arcade linked the forums directly. They swarmed over here and shut the server down:/

I hope you're joking Highwinder. :)
I'm glad that you love Homeworld so much... but I think it's great that HW2 is getting a lot of publicity. Don't you want us to continue being around to make more good games? We're not a bunch of people who like sitting around on our laurels on just a couple of successful games you know... It'd get kind of boring. ;)

Remember a community must grow or die. In any case, the undesirables will meet up with mistar dyn and his banstick. They'll be fine, or they can go back. I wouldn't worry too much.
And as for the sense of a smaller community...well, that's what your friends are for. IMs and chat rooms. Usually what makes a small community feel better is the strength of your connections with your friends. As long as those are reasonably healthy; if the community size grows it shouldn't damage the relationship too much.

Er...been to Slashdot recently? Or even kuro5hin for that matter?
And what's with this "must grow or die" corporate bullshit? A community can say exactly the size it is and still flourish.
I'm not against the idea of new members on these boards; I welcome them if I can belittle them as much as I can belittle you guys (except Mr Panf). But I take exception to this concept that new members are required.

Well, in the long run any community will require new members, as older members will invariably leave in one way or another, like dieing.
I don't wanna die ... :weep:
Do you think that maybe the mods could like put me in cryo or something ... (And I don't mean freezing my account)
I think the only thing I can do is be part of a thread that gets archived, and then hope someone will read it one day.
And lets all hope that it will never come to Relic not being around ...:grouphug:

That was just on the announcement that HW2 was going gold. Think of what will happen on the actual release date...
I thought all the publicity the relic forums got was over the Marweas incident.
Many organisations must indeed grow or die. As for communities like this... I think I'll agree with bnonn. Too many people sucks, cos it seems like you dont know anyone.
Well no actually, the fact that the core reason for the relic forums existance is relic games, without the incentive of these games the community would shrink and die. In which case at least being able to replace lost members is important.
:offtopic:
Believe me bnonn, "corporate bullshit" is my major, and I can honestly say that much of what we are taught is just that. However it provides an interesting and valuable insight into the superpowers of the modern western world (corporations, if you hadn't guessed), and exactly how they manipulate and control the world... which is my selected program of study, although not in as many words. Social engineering towards a consumerist society is one of the main stated goals of the modern corporation, and I'm sure you'll have guessed that it has worked. The ultimate goal of every corporation is necessarilly world domination, in order to make money. There is every chance that corporations will be able to deal satisfactorilly with the ongoing backlash against capitalism, essentially brainwashing society through the manipulation of language and various other methods to limit even thought, which it so far has managed to do with the deliberately individualistic society we now live in.
which reminds me, I'm supposed to be doing a management communication (essentially "brainwashing your employees into being happy 101") paper.

There were more people around who supported HW before the forums [for some strange self destructive reason] attempted to throw their clientele off the scent, these are probably old hands returning as well as new ones.
I hope you will make them feel welcome  in your own fashion !
As far as I am concerned the more the merrier, cant go round keeping it to ourselves now can we ? :noball:

I liked this community when it was so small that HIGHWINDER wasn't a part of it. Now there are more people about, well, that's just more people to put him in his place (the bin).

Well often what happens with new people is that after a few days they all dissapear only leaving a few worthless posts asking if ionfish is a snack (and then they laugh a lot at that their amazing cleverness) or if they are allowed to have a custom avatar (and then they claim that EVERYONE has them except for them cause they don't figure out how to put one of the preloaded ones).
But after a while only the worthy ones remain and become important parts of the community.
I remember when DVC was a new person with his eloquently written luff letter to HW and Relic that Alex Garden personally responded to (and then a bunch of people tried to emulate his post and failed) and now we all luff DVC and his audio skills and his funniness (and love of transformers, and his enviable custom avater).
I also remember when Vijil first started showing his drawing skills especially in the DOM competition (best stuff EVER) and now is a major and important member of the community especially in the gallery forum where he continually adds ridiculous stuff, and his enviable custom avatar.
So just lean your shoulder against the oncoming tide of noobs and hope a few come out as good peoples and the rest will wash away down the drain of banning or just dissapearing.

My god, the n00bness is on a biblical scale. It hurts the eyes. This is gonna be a sucky couple of months.

Or maybe a great couple? Everyone's going to be on a high because of the release of a great game that we've all been waiting several years for. Yes, there will be many doltish n00bs running about the place screaming blue murder over custom avatars and comparatively strict moderating but they'll also be a few who will contribute greatly. I know it's corny and a bit of a cliché, but we were all newbies once...

Elitist snobs. :p
And what's with this "must grow or die" corporate bullshit? A community can say exactly the size it is and still flourish. But it won't stay exactly the same size. People will drift away over time, and the community will shrink, unless new people join up. There's just about nothing worse than a same-old-same-old community. You turn into a bunch of old farts sitting around talking about the same things over and over again, growing crusty and grumpy in your old age. :cranky:
We've seen very refreshing new blood in here lately. Here's an example (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15501). I'd bet there's some awesome modmaking talent kicking around this crowd as well, as yet unannounced but just dying to start modelling or skinning or mission-making.
Who wouldn't want more of that, even if it does come with a few relatively quite non-contributors or spamfesters that get bansticked about the head anyway?

Usually when there are no new members people's interests wane, they move on and such. I dislike forums with huge membership, but a forum with two digit membership is usually a bit quiet, as ten percent is on at any given moment. Right now the forum size is alright, and I have no qualms with new members to our community. I have faith our mods will keep things under control...unlike other forums on the net, which seem like the Wild West at time.

You have to kinda like the new people. Sure, most of them will be n00bs during the first few weeks, months, but after a while a good number will be incorporated into the community quite well, like all of us 'older' guys have.
Besides, you never know who we might be getting back in the way of people who left. Which reminds me... I think i caught an account by the name of 'sno' up there in the active list a week or so back... Haven't seen HIM in a while, if it's the same guy.

Sno? That guy back then was a spamming legend, together with the only moderator Sorak who was constantly chasing him :)

Yeah, that movie was frickin hilarious. The best part was that blu was made a mod just because he had Athexx shoot Uber. Good times.

BTW, for those curious: The first 23 parts of the Relic Board Movie are in this thread (http://www.strategyplanet.com/homeworld/rbarchive/RBTM/002431.htm), including my one and only line in the movie, "Anything guys?"
The last 3 parts are burried in this thread (http://www.strategyplanet.com/homeworld/rbarchive/RBTM/004379.htm).
It was a masterpiece... most of the major players in the movie still post around here. You might recognize some folks such as Ionfish, Dmille, Disco Stu, CeeJayOz, Uberjumper, Etc, posting in there more n00bish days :)

I want another thing like that, including all top 20 posters or something (And other known people). That would be truly epic.

Course, the banstick is not as effective as the
"Troll of Doom!"
Those that cant take Bnonn, will propably leave, and aren't mature enough to handle criticism anyway :-D
I keep to GenDisc, and the Homeworld boards.
FanFIc is awesome though :-D
