Becoming a Space Marine

I know that Space Marines are absurdly large when compared to your average human, and I know that they go through a lengthy process to get alterations and modifications to become a space marine. Does anyone know what this process entails?

Some are former Guardsmen, others were heroes from primitive tribes, and even strong young men who defended their planet in the face of danger.
