Or should i say the lack of it. i have an athlon 1.9 Ghz, 512Mb ram, Gforce 4 MX440, and pci audio sound card. all with recent drivers.

However, when i had win 98 installed, the gameplay wass terrible. it was smooth once ina while, when there were only a few ships on screen, and later battles became almost impossible. Now this could be due to the fact that win98 suported drivers are rarely created anymore.

Then, when i upgraded to win2kpro, there is almost no gameplay problems, it all goes smooth as water, except for the occasional close up of a sprite. Now would that difference in fps/playability be caused by the OS or would it be more likely to be driver support for win98?

imm putting me €s on the latter explanaition, but just wanted to be sure.

Ammon:

Not Bios, Motherboard drivers.

With an Athlon, chances are you might have a Via chipset (or another one that requires drivers to be installed in windows to work properly). If you don't have the latest drivers, you can see a huge framerate hit. Several people have reported that fixing their motherboard drivers solved framerate issues for them.

I'm running very slow on the demo (7-9 frames in battles) no more than 20 frames during regular gameplay.

I checked and my video card (GeForce4 Ti 4200 128MB) IS running in PCI mode...hope this works!

"just updated everything and went through the bios vigourously" yes windows drivers. i went through the nios, and updated the windows MB drivers.

your gf4mx440 is suposed tobe in agp mode.

btw uber, its not the mb drivers. everything remained the same when i upgraded to win2kpro. or i assume its eitheer the os itself or the lack of suport for win98se drivers. i assume its the later.i think the last version that suported win98 was 35.** or around that version.

so its not win98se that's the problem. :) its the drivers

Win2k has some built in support for AMD hardware if I remember correctly, so that's probably why it works there.

Do you have a Via chipset?

yep. via ddr chipset. sont worry hw2 demo works almost perfectly on my system now, after i upgraded (and searched for) win2k.

personaly i think its the detonator drivers. i remeber reading that they dont suport 98 anymore since version...erm..since some time now.
