Rules:
This riddle thread is open to any and all Relic Forum members that wish to participate. The rules are all basiclly simple if you bother to read them. The rules really don't need much enforcing. There are several recommended guidelines that are listed in order to help maintain an orderly method to this entertaining past time.
Recommended procedural guidelines (Now Official):
[1] Only one riddle can be posted at any given time. Once that riddle has been solved and confirmed by the riddle's author, the next riddle will be written by the one who solved the previous riddle. This responsibility can be directed onto another at the discretion of the one who solved the riddle, or the author of the riddle is there is no response.
[2] Make only one guess at a time. This prevents people from randomly guessing without thinking for the answer. It is also recommended that you include some basis from which you dervied your answer, some riddlers may require this in order to confirm/deny your answer.
[3] Once the riddle has been solved, the next riddle must be posted within 2 days of the confirmation. After this time has passed, the writer of the previous riddle can designate another to write the required riddle. This assures that the threads do not become too idle awaiting the next riddle.
[4] The riddle and its solution must be from a Homeworld game or media including but not limited to: HW1 HWC HW2 Dustwars Mods HW too. At any time while a given riddle is being solved, a hint can be requested. Giving this hint is at the writer's discretion. Just dont request one every other guess lol.
[5] Run the Riddles through a spell checker before posting.
[6] Highlight the Riddles in a colour.
[7] Do not edit your reply. It's cheating.
[8] If a riddle is invalid, the author has to write another one, or the person who answers the riddle has to go with the usual procedure.
[9] If a correct answer is given with the wrong explination the guess is still right.
Ok to get this off in the right direction I will post the first riddle and make it relatively easy. I just want everyone to get into the flow before we start with the hard riddles. Ok here I go.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line
You should follow my path

yeah beast main self got it its the guide stone, i made it super simple.
i would like to how you came up with the answer example:
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line - if you look at the stone you can see the direct path from kharak to hiigara
You should follow my path - its the easiest way to hiigara
Although its not as easy as it seems - you had to fight a galactic war to get there
I was cherished by your people, forgotton and discovered by your children. - the exiles created it in hope that later generations would find it, through the sands of time it was forgotton but eventually found by the exiles decendants
X Y but not Z the map is drawn 2-deminsionally (x and y axis)
but i guess since it was so simple an explination was not needed
ok now beast main comes up with a riddle

The Three Far Jump Cores. One was used by the Bentusi and guarded zealously against the younger races. Another was used to get a shipload of Exiles to Hiigara through a war. And when the third showed up, Makaan and his fleet essentially pitted it against the other two.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line - if you look at the stone you can see the direct path from kharak to hiigara
This is being nitpicky, but it actually isn't a straight line. There are a few bends in it.
As for the answer to the riddle, I thought it was the Emergency Beacon from HW:C at first.

I'm guessing it's the Supernova Station mission in HW1.
Through the dust - Means a few things here. It could be referring to the fact that you have to bring your ships through the dust belts in order to avoid the radiation. The other reference is to the Outer Rim Dust Bank which the Kushan fleet has just cleared.
Before the truth - The mission immediately after, Tenhauser Gate, is where you and the Kushan fleet learn of the reason for their Exile, aka the Bentusi revelation mission. I would thus guess that this is the "truth" you're referring to.
After the phantom - A reference to the mission just before, the Sea of Lost Souls. Here, the Phantom is probably a reference to the Ghost Ship, a derelict vessel of great mystery.
And wow, so far these riddles are just cool! :D

Sarum Dust Clouds?
It fits all of those lines to a point anyway. Your ships were undetectable in the clouds(phantoms)
They could only be seen with a probe or a ping or if they engaged in battle since basic sensors were moot in there.(the truth bit)
And the other part is pretty self explanitory.(Through the dust)
I know i'm probably wrong but it was worth a shot. :D

I came to help, but needed help in the end.
I was blinded, but a flame guided me through hostile land.
Can be easy or difficult, depending on your leaning towards whichever game. :D
EarthBorn
13th Mar 06, 6:20 AM
Let's see-
I came to help, but needed help in the end.
This could mean the Bentusi, Captain Soban...
I was blinded, but a flame guided me through hostile land.
Soban was not blinded, but the Bentusi were, by the beast. Later they disarmed their Flagship and needed help from the Taiidan.
So my guess is- The Bentusi?
Starblade
13th Mar 06, 6:20 AM
I came to help but needed help in the end.- Captain Elson assisted the Exiles, but required assistance later on.
I was blinded, but a flame guided me through hostile land.- He appears around when the Mothership takes heavy damage, and begins to burn (usually).
So, my guess is Captain Elson.
atmawpn
13th Mar 06, 6:32 AM
Nope, but the guesses were certainly well thought out though. :)
Starblade
13th Mar 06, 6:36 AM
I switch to Captain Soban, then. :p
Soban helped Pride of Hiigara, then got captured and needed its help. The second line doesn't really go with it, though.

The Caal-Shto
I came to help, but needed help in the end.
The Caal-Shto arrived at Aiowa to assist the Bentusi and the Kuun-Lan in their destruction of the Beast, but was subsequently damaged by the Bentusi's self-destruct.
I was blinded, but a flame guided me through hostile land.
Part of this damage was to the Caal-Shto's navigation and sensor systems. The Somtaaw (later Beastslayers - "burn" the Beast) guided the carrier through the Kadiir nebula, past an Imperialist Taiidan outpost.
atmawpn
13th Mar 06, 4:46 PM
JAL-18 got it right except for the flame part. The flame was intended as a direct reference to the Kuun Lan, which according to the manual, meant "Purifying Flame."
We can now await JAL's riddle. :D

'The Core of the Cores'- Well, it combines them, I suppose.
'Uncapturable, beyond horizon'- beyond the event horizons of the black holes?

the Progenitor foundry ship
It is where the cores were made, so it is the core of cores,
beyond the horizon, most of it is outside the map, and it is uncapturable
:banana:so exciting:jig:
Inert
16th Mar 06, 4:51 PM
Hyperspace? The cores were built to generate hyperspace... so that would be their core function. Don't... really... know... just going off intuition.

No, No, and no.
Starblade was the closest :).
MetalDragoon83
16th Mar 06, 6:17 PM
The Eye of Aaron (or however you spell it)
It is really the core of cores as it hypes you where ever you want in the galaxy.
Uncapturable because you can only unlock it, and beyond horizon meaning beyond the understanding of the current races?
AMARDA
16th Mar 06, 8:20 PM
Balcora!
The core of cores = The core of the galaxy.
Uncapturable, beyond horizon = No race could take as their own due to the gravtational effects. Also you need the gate to enter.
Inert
16th Mar 06, 10:33 PM
Eh... I don't think I'm allowed to post another guess after my first one... but might I ask that it starts with an 'H' as well? I am looking at it again, now, with a clearer head and thought it was rather simple.
*should've not have guessed when having a headache*
EarthBorn
16th Mar 06, 11:37 PM
AMARDA wins :), although the reasons were slightly different.
-Uncapturable means that it was not a hyperspcae core that could be captured.
Beyond Horizon was a literal reference to Event Horizon.
We await your riddle :D.

Your capital ships are mere pawns to me- The Ghost Ship could take them over with ease. The pawns of your own race, the Fighters and Corvettes, were immune to it, however.

Maybe the Planet Killers as only the Sajuuk can damage them
Inert

Starblade wins; I shouldn't have italicized the wording though. ;)
The riddle was about how the ghost ship takes over your capital ships, effectively making them her pawns.

Hyperspace
atmawpn
20th Mar 06, 6:56 AM
This is very vague, but may I suggest the Bushan-Re?
It was adrift in space due to battle damage, and although it was later attacked by Turanic Raiders, in that mission the Kuun Lan also chanced upon the Naggarok's beacon pod. So it could be the relative "calm" before the eventual "storm" of the Beast.
I'd ask for a hint, but something tells me it's vague for a reason. :D
Starblade
20th Mar 06, 8:20 AM
Yes, it's vague for a reason. Any more specific and I'd give it away (no one has gotten it yet, but atma is on the right track).
MetalDragoon83
20th Mar 06, 11:55 AM
I'm saying it's the third Hyperspace Core
-The calm refering to the Helios Ice Fields, always found snow and all calming.
-Bfore the storm refering the the Vayger Storm accross the galaxy.

EDIT: If no one gets mine, can I say I win the thread? :p
Inert
20th Mar 06, 4:12 PM
The Kuun-lan?
It was mining (peacefully) before the "aided" the Hiigaran defense group in M01. The storm could be a reference to the handbook's statement "quiet before the inevitable storm" or something among those lines. The "storm" it refers to is the battle that you fight in M01.
Fiirks
20th Mar 06, 5:51 PM

Starblade

MetalDragoon83
20th Mar 06, 9:03 PM
The FireStorm Bombing of Kharak.
It was meant as the final act against the Kushan
It was meant to wipe them out
But instead it lit up a civil war and lead the Kushan to wage war against the empire
Lit innumerable fires meaning that even the counsil was against it

When the Taiidan burned Kharak and the mothership survived.
It was ment to kill all the exiles but they started a rebellion and they over threw the Taiidan Empire
Inert
20th Mar 06, 9:04 PM
The fire-bombing of Kharak.
It was meant to extinguish the Kushans, but forwarded the Taiidani Rebellion and the Kushan's intent to take vengence (the two "conflagrations").
I'm guessing the "innumerable fires" were battles.

Could it be Kiith Naabal during the Kushan's stay on Kharak?
They were armed with ancient knowledge... literally. Of course, at that time, such knowledge and technology was considered advanced, advanced enough to unite all the Kiithid.
They were isolated from the war, so coming out of isolation could be an equivalent to coming out of the darkness.
Naabal intervened in the Heresy Wars and stopped them, which was a madness in itself. (Arguing over the origin of Kharak and then some belief of punishment)

He means HOMEWORLD, not Homeworld: Cataclysm.
I'm going to guess kamikazing resource collectors. A few people I've talked to consider that a dirty trick--they're not combat units, and you have to MAKE them kami. (Which, btw, I can't seem to get 'em to do that, lol.) Several can take out quite a lot. :D Hence the "Kaboom."

Fiirks
24th Mar 06, 7:33 AM
Well, two people got it. Access, Success, Essential, there are a few out there that are lots of fun. Armada posted first, so hes the winner!
I was playing in a 2v2 one day. I told the other team "Press HOME and then type in ACCESS to make all your ships indestructible". Before I could whisper to my ally not to do it, he had blown himself up! The best part was though, both of the other guys did it too! :D
Silly noobs.
Starblade

I remember when I was going to tell someone to use access (we were all skilled, so it was a joke), but forgot to hit T to talk, so I blew myself up. 7 'WTF?'s popped up instantly, rofl.
Fiirks
24th Mar 06, 9:42 AM
Hahahaha... I did a similar thing too. While at school I play alot of starcraft with my friends in the dorm. In Starcraft, the talk command is set to the "enter" button. In Homeworld, ENTER takes you to the last notification, so if a ship launches and it says "Ion Cannon Frigate completed" and you hit enter (like I did) you zoom to your ms... Unfortunately, I wasnt paying close attention and my typing contained E followed by SS (I forget what hte word was) and KABOOM.

Starblade

I'm also fairly certain Taii wasn't blown up, just bombed. Sort of like Kharak, but to a much lesser extent, iirc. But that has to do with the answer, not the riddle.

The orbital missiles fell for a full day upon the Imperial Palace and every military facility upon Taiidan's surface.
From the Homeworld Shipyards.
Taiidan wasn't destroyed, only bombed, and then again, only the palace and military bases.
And the Hiigarans did have a republic, as EarthBorn said.

the three unite

but the destruction of one
lead to many.
aussieman
24th Mar 06, 8:24 PM
Id say Sajuuk as the three cores united inside the ship. The Sajuuk was going to be used to destroy Makkan but then he was killed by the Higgarans just trying to keep Sajuuk out of his hands. This then leads the Higgarans to go back to Higgara to lift the Vagyr Seige where the bombing platforms attacked. So I guess the "lead to many" part was either the Bombing platforms or the Higarans Killed when one of those missles got through (or so the story line says)

Well if a riddle is invalid because there was still an active riddle or the author was not the winner of a previous riddle the riddle in question does not count. which means the answer that comes along with the invalid riddle holds no water.
But to prevent massive confusion and this threads inevitable sinkage, I guess daton can post a new one since the last acceptable riddle was some time ago.

I have given willingly: The bomb, the knowledge of where the Naggarok is
All that I know of: Again, the Naggarok
You do not understand: Why would the Turanic give in, and why would the Taiidan reinforcements back off?

BTW you happen to be talking to one of the foremost experts of HW, creator of the HW archives site and author of HW:Too, one of the foremost examples of HW literature in the galaxy before and today... :bunny:
Where I stand; - Archeologist Sagald stood
Heat is killed, - in the Khar-Toba's wreck's shade OR referring to the fact that the Guidestone was imprevious to intense heat
By pleasant land. - in the Great Desert on the true homeworld Kharak (home sweet home thus pleasant)
The Truth came to me. - that they were not on it
I saw reality. - that the true Homeworld was Hiigara
Sorry but you happen to be wrong. :p
BTW, you did not even give the final answer, only the solving of the riddle...it;s still wrong though.
[whispers to EB]
I have to let others have a chance while still appearing good you know... ssshhh keep it a secret... :sneaky:
(btw I think I know the answer now...)

Not really sure if you're asking who, what, or where, so here goes:
Is it the Super Nova Research Station?
Where I stand/Heat is killed/By pleasant land: The Mothership was shielded from the Supernova's radiation in the dust clouds.
The Truth came to me/ I saw Reality: It's a research station, seeking truth. Not to mention the reality of the situation: leave the clouds and die, rather like how you sneaked along your path to Hiigara. You took the easy ways through (including the weakest guarded Hyperspace Inhibitor at the Bridge of Sighs).

No.
I thought it was quite obvious!
Majiir Paktu, who found the southern polar region of Kharak with its large ocean and fertile lands behind?

You know, I really should go read the HW manual again. Specifically, all the Kiith listings, and their histories.

No, but close.

Since it's two days now, I'll give a hint: It's a place.

The Guidestone room itself in Khar-Toba?
The "Heat is killed / By pleasant land" part is what stuck out at me. The heat of Kharak killed by the promise of a pleasant world--Hiigara.
"The Truth came to me / I saw reality"--The realization that the Guidestone indicated Hiigara WAS a real place, and that there was a flight path to there clearly delineated by it.
