View Full Version : very basic FX changing Tut

as the title implies this mini (and small) tutorial will allow very basic changes and will give anyone a basic step forward into the world of FX. i am in no way an expert and on the same-ish level of "what does all this do."

so what you need:
you need the following tools:
FX tool, an extraction tool such as the sga explorer or corsix mod tools.

extract the entire FX folder into:

My_mod/data/art/fx

my_mod is the name of your mod in the dawn of war directory.

for example mine is Storm_of_existence/data/art/fx.
once you have the fx extracted you can start editing the fx thats ingame already.

now in my mod where you can get god specific stuff you want to show your dedication to the gods, and what better with new fx colour coded to each of the gods.

lets start of with a basic khorne FX taken from the chaos lord.

open up the FX tool. once up select open from the filemenu. as we are taking an fx from the lord we shall navigate to the chaos folder then idle folder.

heres the path my_mod/data/art/fx/chaos/idle

look for the file named chaos_lord_head_glow_combo.

load it up and play the fx. you will get something like this
here
http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/3497/project1so6.th.jpg (http://img48.imageshack.us/my.php?image=project1so6.jpg)

now we are going to change the colour of that fx for now to a nice gore riddled red to show the dedication of our warriors to the god khorne.

notice on the right hand side where it has all the text and various other things? (if not try expanding the window)

that is how you will change and add FX.

assuming you opened up chaos_lord_head_glow_combo,
click on the text saying "unit_power_fist_glow_ring_2"

clicking the + sybol will expand the menu further.

for now we just want to keep our eyes on the duration and colour texts.

opening up the duration will allow you to change how long the fx plays. for now go into colour.
underneath the fx window you will see a colour chart along with alpha and a long bar at the bottom with notches in it. click on a notch and then select a colour. see what happens when you change the colour? the fx will blend into another colour as the fx plays. click on a notch and move it along the bar. you can make smoother playing fx by adding more notches.

to add one simply click or right click on the bar to remove. make the fx red and play around a little.

eventually you may end up with this:
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6440/project1mh1.th.jpg (http://img87.imageshack.us/my.php?image=project1mh1.jpg)

when your happy with the changes you can save it normally and use the changed fx insead of the normal one or save it as a different name ready for use on new models. <---- i wont go there just yet so dont ask

heres some basic fx i cooked up earlier.

has red colour auras for khorne green and yellows for nurgle, blues and purple for tzeentch and pink and dark purples for slaanesh. has a changed machine spirit for the chaos side to (imagine MS but red with purple tones in it instead)

Thank you so much! The only thing I'm even semi-competent at for DoW modding is attribute editor.

I've always wanted to change around FX though, so this is god-send.

Keep up the good work!

Excellent tutorial !

I have already been fiddling around and picked up a few things but .. back to the obvious; how do you extract the FX folder I do have Corsix Tools and SGA explorer but I fail to see where you find the FX's etc? Any help?

If this is more relevant to my question

"so what you need:
you need the following tools:
FX tool, an extraction tool such as the sga explorer or corsix mod tools.

extract the entire FX folder into:

My_mod/data/art/fx"

that I'm stuck on,
Thanks

EDIT: I do know where to extract just don't know how..

Damn we SOOO NEED A decent DoW FX Tutorial/TuT although Compiler offered a good place as well which allowed Catwell to be decently-versed in FX'ing. Check this out (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=155076)

We also need a decent OE And "import into game" tut as well as OE is another challenge aspect of DoW modding like FX is.

HH - how about making the community's largest detonationFX similar to DoWXP's explosion? It would be one motha of an explosion with cascading blast wave and mushroom cloud.

Actually I have found out how to extract it now. No problem.

I do agree a more more fulfilled FX tutorial is in dire need one that builds you up from the basics to the difficile.

I'll third Thuds post. We need many more tutorials, particularly on the use of OE and particularly ones that don't assume you know what your doing...

yes its even posted out on the tuts and helpsites thread. im surprised not enough people notice it and post nice comments every now and then :noway: .

as for OE tuts i have started a first part and writing the second part explqaining how to construct a motion and action tree and adding fx. the first part is around somewhere.. you will just have to look around a bit for now untill i update it.
