Cathalos City – Superhero Boardwar

It is the not-too-distant future. Mankind struggles against the soaring crime rates as the police sit idly by, cashing in their extra pay cheque at the end of the month. In these troublesome times it seems that hope is lost and that the streets will forever be dominated by the scum and villains that roam the city. Decent, law-abiding citizens take refuge in their homes, afraid of being challenged by a gang of vagabonds. It is in these times that good people need a symbol of hope, a symbol of charity and goodwill. It is in these times that the people need…

A superhero.

The boardwar takes place in the city of Cathalos, a large and imposing city with a skyline spiked with towering buildings surrounded by a maze of smaller businesses and suburbs. The weather ranges from overcast and grey, normally with rain to infrequent sunny days where the sky is clear and a pleasant atmosphere reigns supreme.

This boardwar is a character-driven superhero story in a more ‘traditional’ sense. The player’s characters comprise of men and women with unprecedented physical prowess and dedicated to acts of derring-do in interest of public safety and well-being. Some may prefer more villainous characters that enjoy nothing more than using their abilities to inflict pain and suffering on innocent people, or those they deem a threat. Wearing colourful or foreboding costumes these superhumans keep their identities a secret of utmost importance, blending in with the everyday populace when not fighting, or being the source of crime.

Characters must be balanced and not Godly powerful, with some weaknesses else an asteroid they cannot avoid will annihilate them in their sleep, strangely causing no harm to the surrounding area.

Characters can be created under several ‘types’. Superhumans are those who battle it out using their extraordinary abilities, such as superhuman strength, the ability to fly etc.

Humans(Skill) are ordinary humans who have mastered skills such as martial arts, or have spent years perfecting their knowledge on chemistry.

Others, like Humans(Tech) get through life with special weapons or technology, such as high-powered, but primitive lasers, or rings that enable cloaking.

Superheroes with a sidekick are allowed, as long as both combined are not overly powerful (i.e. the sidekick is usually weaker than the main hero).

Superheroes whose powers are down to extraordinary ability sometimes carry other equipment with them, to supplement their natural abilities. These sorts of items are allowed, as long as they are not too powerful.

Starting Locations:

Player characters start in their homes, be it apartments or semi-detached houses in the suburbs. No ones character will start with an uber secret lair with their own butler and fleet of vehicles unless they first PM me with their character sheet and have a good reason. Don’t expect a yes, though. Secret lairs are like respect: You have to earn them. (Or steal the money from a bank if you’re that way inclined.)

Other Locations:

There are many towering skyscrapers in Cathalos city but the biggest is home to Victor Kalahn, a wealthy businessman who has the courts in one pocket and organized crime in the other.

[More will come when I can think of some :D]

Boardwar Rules:

#1. I am the GM. If there are any disputes, my decision is final.
#2. No power- or metagaming.
#3. No flaming. If you have a dispute that cannot be resolved by both parties I shall step in and make a final decision.
#4. This is a semi-futuristic/fantasy boardwar. Superpowers are limited only by your imagination, however technology is capped; Lasers exist but in a primitive and none-portable state (i.e. the sort of laser found in Goldfinger.)
Secret lairs are plausible with all the rotating doors and secret entrances etc.
Firearms are still fairly similar.
Cars still have four wheels etc.
#5. I’d like for people to be as original as possible with their superheroes; carbon copies of existing superhumans will either be annihilated, or asked to change.
Also, I’d appreciate it if people could stray away from generic anime characters that we seem to have in abundance round here – Trench coats, dual pistols, katana’s and big hair are out in this boardwar. Though I have nothing with them being used singly, i.e. someone who has practiced kendo all his life and wields a katana is fine. As soon as he pulls out dual Deagles or whatever, Mr. Asteroid is paying a visit.

Name: Zeronemus
Age: 38
Sex: Male
Alignment: Male
Type: Superhuman

Characteristics:

Description: http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/2996/antagonistks6.jpg

Main power
Psychokinesis. Zeronemus is able to maniulate objects, both organic and inanimate with his mind. His power ranges from picking things up and moving them, to crushing or tearing them apart.
Secondary power
Teleportation. Zeronemus has developed the ability to move from one place to the other, without taking up space inbetween. Whilst he has mastered this power he cannot teleport more than a few miles at a time otherwise he will become mentally fatigued.
Equipment:
Bionic arm. Zeronemus lost his left arm from the elbow down in an accident several years ago. He personally developed a bionic replacement which houses many functions. It has controls for all of the facilities in his lair and several other added trinkets, such as a tracking bug for example.

Whilst it may seem to be quite egotistical of me, I've decided that my character will be the prime antagonist of this boardwar. Player characters aren't enforced to come after him, but he will be a main part of the story with evil plans being executed within the city that goody-two-shoes might want to stop from happening. Of course, I will need a second in-command: every evil overlord has one!

The IC thread (with the opening part of the story) will be created either at at the beginning-mid next week, or if we have enough players before then.

Three new BWs in one day. That has to be a record.

Name: Laje Grey, "Aurora Princess"
Age: ?
Sex: Female
Alignment: Neutral-indolent
Type: Superhuman

Main power: Ripple Light Aura
Laje can release an emphemeral haze of light which draws the eyes and leaves haunting afterimages as she moves. When fully released, it becomes extremely difficult to accurately follow her movements and attacks, and also appears to physically enchance her, dramatically increasing her movement capabilities as well as the cutting power of her swords. Looking directly into the haze also alters the viewer's perception of time, slowing her movements to a crawl until she abruptly cuts them.

Secondary power: Heavenly Gate
Light explodes around Laje, wrapping her in a protective barrier and withdrawing her from combat. It is said that this gate leads to a safe and healing place, something unconfirmed as no one has ever followed her there.

Equipment: Katana and wakizashi pair.

She once had spiky hair, two desert eagles, a trenchcoat and huge breasts, but she decided they didn't go with her image. Now she dresses like a wannabe miko instead, but has kept the breasts. Her white robes are normally concealed by a grey cloak, which also stops guys from staring. Well, they still stare. But only because they're wondering WTF a chick with a fantasy-style cloak is doing in town, and possibly where she got it from.

Backstory: It is said that a thousand years ago, the son and daughter of a great samurai committed the ultimate taboo and fell in love with each other. However, despite their attempts to conceal their feelings, their father was warned by the kami of their dead grandmother. Outraged, the samurai went to cleanse his blood of their sins with his sword, cornering the sister and aiming to strike her down. However, the brother charged him from behind and killed his father with an underhanded blow. At this, the sword god Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi descended from heaven and destroyed their entire village in great wrath. He cursed the siblings with immortality and a fraction of his divine aura, as well as a destiny to wander the earth forever looking for each other, never to find who they seek.

To this day, Laje calls this an overreaction.

Name: Zath "The Wolf" Carmine
Age: 32
Sex: Male
Alignment: Evil - ish
Type: Superhuman

Characteristics: Zath Carmine started as a bio-Genetics Scientist, looking deeper and deeper at what made the genetical traits some animals had, possible, and to find a way to improve the genetic composition of normal human beings. Said research required a big money income, however, and many other companies had refused to aid him in his research.

Zath was a friend to a bussiness guy named Sebastian Quinn who also had a deep involvement with local crime events. Without the funds, Zath decided to help Sebastian in his local raids. By doing so, he would earn part of the loot. In almost no time he progressed through the ranks of their organization and quickly gained the trust of many of the organization's integrants. As his influence grew, so did Sebastian's jealousy at Zath.

One day, in the middle of one of Zath's experiments with wolves in which he studied why they were so resilient in the most harsh situations, Sebastian hired three out-of-town killers to take care of Zath.

When they arrived, a fight ensued, and the end was so catastrophical, a mistake ocurred. An explosion that devastated the whole lab followed. One of the three men survived the initial blast, only to be killed by a monstrous abomination that emerged from the debris. Zath had mutated in the freak accident, and said mutation gave him a fast regeneration ability and in-human strength. He now had long fangs, long ears and a lot of Fur.

Angered, he decimated the thug with his razor shap claws, and proceeded to find Sebastian and exact his revenge. After a long and ardorous hunt, Zath cornered Sebastian in an old meat factory and outright killed him.

Knowing his life as a scientist was over, he took command of Sebastian's organization, and became a powerful Crime lord. He is slowly degradating or de-evolving into a wolf.

Description: Zath is tall and has a Strong physical appearance, he is covered with fur, from his mouth come big Fangs and he has razor sharp claws. He uses a mask at all times that resembles a wolf head (even rumored to be made from an actual Wolf head), and was modified so he can use his own fangs should he need to.

Strengths: Even though he is a crime lord, he has a strong opinion that what he does is right. He controls a large criminal group And has good fighting skills. he also has keen senses.
Weaknesses: Due to his inhuman appearance he rarely is seen in public, and almost always works at night. Sunlight affects him greatly.
Goals: To find a cure for his mutation and become the strongest Crime lord Cathalos has ever seen.

Traits
Superhuman
Main power: Fast Regeneration rate, meaning he can take very serious wounds without taking any serious damage.
Secondary power: Abnormal Strength. While not powerful enough to carry 10 cars, 1 is good.
Equipment: A Strange wolf-like mask he covers his head whith, a black coat, and a ragged cloak. May be seen weilding a firearm (from an SMG, to a handgun), but he rarely uses it.

Extra/Misc:

Zath lives in an old, abandoned warehouse that used to be "Mac's Frozen foods" storehouse, which he uses as a meeting place for his band.

Huzzah, inspiration has come in the form of a Philosophy lecture on Induction. This basically means my character will make little sense conceptually!

Name: Bennet Thompson
Age: 23
Sex: Male
Alignment: Tries to be good.
Type: A mix of all really, but his main power is superhuman and gave him reason to get fitter and invest in useful yet everyday gadgets.

Characteristics: Bennet always craved something that defined him, and when he 'realised' his power in a moment of desperation he became what he had always wanted to be; someone with the power to stop injustice.

Bennet appears normal, lives a normal life, his most defining quality now is of opportunity. He wishes to find others like himself and become more than just a sporadic protector, he wants to be co-ordinated in his efforts.

Description: A green eyed man of a hefty but now slightly toned build. He wears useful clothes over fashionable ones, though he cares not for the price tag. When manifesting his ability anonymously he will wear a dull green costume of kevlar, combats and anything useful he can get his hands on.

Strengths: He has a keen eye, a very keen eye.
Weaknesses: No real martial training, he likes to keep a very low profile and so foten doesn't have time to train to a high level nor bring that much attention to himself.
Goals: Use of power for good, whilst being a detached moral exemplar, always acting in the shadows.

Trait
Superhuman
Main power: The Grue

The Grue as he calls it is an odd power. Bennet has the ability to manifest an unobservable version of himself wherever he can see clearly, this then allows him to perceive and effect the surroundings of this other self. He calls the other self the Blue Emerald, himself being the Green Emerald. The Blue is a fully functioning human body that simply cannot be directly seen or heard, so it cannot speak but can be heard to walk or make an impact, on the other hand no form of visual scanning can reveal its presence.

Bennet's mind becomes two fold when he manifests the Blue as does his effective physical features as he can manifest the Blue's arms or legs independently to aid him in climbing or combat. The Blue can also be manifested in midair, allowing Bennet a very limited form of flight, or at least a levitation effect.

Bennet has to keep line of sight with the Blue at all times during manifestation, however on occasion he has been able to use the Blue's own manifested senses to persevere for a while once line of sight is broken. Bennet is not sure but wonders if this is the power of the Blue and not his primary power.

Secondary power: The Bleen

The Bleen is a so far little seen power, it resides with the Blue. What it can do remains to be seen, but the blue is a creation, a copy, something raw...it is Bennet Thompson, linked and reliant yet effectively independent of mind. What it is capable of, being a figment made manifest is unknown but Bennet...the Green realises the Blue never tires and never needs sustenance.

It remains to be seen what exactly Bennet's powers truly are.

Equipment: Binoculars, monoculars, Bennet has even taken up photography and bird watching in his pursuit of cover stories for being out and about at odd times in odd places.

Influences and accidental likenesses:

Spiderman (photography and a young man waking up one day with strange powers...no spiders here though.)
The Hulk (He isn't turning something and to minds aren't at war but there are two minds and also some green...no gamma radiation though.)
Induction (Yah...an attempt to explain why we can say 'all emeralds are green' without knowing anything about all unobserved emeralds. Quite loosely the inspiration for my character.)

Also original I hope!

Allright, I may need to nerf my character's defense, but Cable will be the judge of that. And I am also not sure if I put her into the right class.

Name: Isis Revanne
Age: 35
Sex: Female
Alignment: Neutral
Type: Human (Tech)

Characteristics: Long black hair, slender arms and legs, perfect shape (not overweight/thin), her eyes are brown. She can’t speak because her vocal chords were damaged in an accident some years ago. She is quite friendly but her inability to speak has caused some situations which she will always remember.

Description: When she is amongst the crowds she always wears dark red clothes which conceal her left arm, thus she doesn't get very much attention. Her left arm is half-bionic and has a built-in text writer, which she controls using a small typewriter located on her belt. When she is fighting against crime, however she uses her metal grey battle-armour which completely conceals her shape and face.

Strengths: High offensive power, moderate armouring
Weaknesses: Doesn’t carry enough ammo for long missions, her lack of speaking prevents her to ask for help from long distances.
Goals: To find a way to return her voice and to help technology advance.

Primary equipment: Metal Grey battle armour codename AX-89. Made out of a flexible but strong material, reflects bullets smaller than 9mm, resists bullets smaller than 16mm.
Secondary equipment:
1 15mm double machine-gun mounted on the right under-arm of the AX-89.
1 Electric battery
Skills:
Electric Strike- Can channel electricity through her suit’s right fist until its battery runs out, allowing her to stun her enemies or overload electric devices. It only lasts for a maximum of two minutes, however. After that, the battery must be recharged.
She also has some close-combat knowledge.

Haro's from Gund- you bastard! Stop spoiling my fun!

By the way, Ragnarok, this is a bit late to say, but "Goals: To find a cure for his mutation and become the strongest Crime lord Cathalos has ever seen" is not a neutral goal. Heck, crime lords aren't neutral, it's in the job description. They're plain and honest evil.

But yeah. Who wants to be a good guy nowadays?

Ragnarok
24th Jan 08, 4:38 PM
im Neutral in the sense i do things that work to my convenience, be it helping Heroes or fighting against them.

but yeah, the goal is quite evil.

So my char is Neutral inclined towards evil.....

Lestaki
24th Jan 08, 4:45 PM
That doesn't follow. An evil character may well help the heroes throughout a story, backing them every step of the way. Generally because they've mislead to the heroes into achieving their own goals. Or else they can certainly do as they please, helping and hindering, without that really changing their allegience. To me, good and evil are about goals, and also to a lesser degree what methods a character will use to achieve that goal. But with an evil goal, it's fairly clear (to me, anyway) that you're evil. Short-term actions all lead to an evil goal.

In contrast, Laje's only goal is to find her brother. That doesn't have anything to do with anyone around her right now, so it's ultimately irrelevant. She doesn't care what happens to people around her, and if it came to it, she'd do reckless things for her goal, but the goal itself isn't really good or evil. And most likely, nothing will advance her goal during the BW. She's neutral for our purposes.

Or something. It's not an important point, really, just an interesting discussion. If you're trying to ressurect your dead sister, say, and are willing to kill anyone who tries to stop you, is that good, neutral or evil? Hmm...

Ragnarok

Sword_Monkey

D&D spectrum works best.

Lawful - Neutral - Chaotic
Good - Neutral - Evil

Pick one from each line.

I would be Chaotic Good, willing to do anything to help others. A crime lord would be Chaotic Evil, willing to do anything for personal gain, his minions however would range from Lawful Neutral to Lawful Evil, obeying the Crime lord but possibly to make a wage, or for personal gain.

Lestaki
24th Jan 08, 5:14 PM
It's not like I'm unaware of that scale. ;) Laje would be chaotic neutral, through and through. But what about my hypothetical dead-sister case? Chaotic good? (intentions?) Chaotic evil? (methods? Especially necromancy) Chaotic neutral? (whatever gets the job done?) And is raising the dead a 'good' intention in the first place? It's often frowned upon...

That said, 'evil-ish' is still the best allegiance ever.

Yea, it seems everyone is going evil so I should make my character the ultimate bastion of charity and goodwill to kick your evil arses.

How does this sound:

The bad guys are all semi-affilated and live in one big fortress of doom and/or big skyscraper of skyscraping and get along, have a few scraps etc and myself and a couple of others who feel like it will be the superheroes who are individually more powerful than you but there's more of you so it balances out?
