Pushover of a Stronghold. Necron attacks are entirely infantry, not even Wraiths; set up base defense accordingly.

After you wipe out the North and South bases, your base is essentially never attacked again. The 4 Necron Monolith thing may seem scary, but they all teleport right in front of your base, asking you to camp down a crapload of AV to greet them.

If you choose to go the mapcleansing route, I highly suggest taking out the Summoning Core first if you don't want a difficult time. Overall, not a Stronghold anyone should have problems with.

If you can live without the relic you will never have to face the deciever too. Also taking out the monoliths(after the summoning core) is very easy as they upgrade very slowly and without the core have only turrets as defense.

You won't have to face the Deceiver period, even if you get the Relic. Just run in, and when he appears, bravely run away for 60 seconds.

What do the Space Smurfs call it? Initiate a *tactical withdrawl*.

Regarding the Deciever: Same thing applies for the Nightbringer who shows up at the Summoning Core. Also, you can ignore the western/northwestern base assaults with a nice wall of turrets. The LP there kinda encourages it, just check it now and then to make sure all the turrets are standing.

Walkover of a base, you just need to work a little faster than usual.

for the eastern base, build artilerry and bombard the land its meant to be on.
If you go around them enemy you can do it for the eastern one also.

umm I pretty much just steamed rolled the entire area regardless of deceiver or nightbringer. as far as base defense maybe a few hell fire dreads and leave the honor gaurd no use in bringing them. this could go with any race attacking the necrons. as Eldar I had the easiest time just ransacking everything.

pretty much by the time the map was done I had about 15 minutes till they hit teir 3.

Keep in mind that the Necron Lord will appear to defend the Monoliths. He also seems to be getting in power along with them (i.e. getting artifacts).

Oh, and as far as I can tell, after you destroy the first Monolith, the rest will spawn spawn one or two Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers as soon as you start attacking them.

Played this stronghold with Eldar, Dark Eldar and Tau, all on Normal.

Eldar: I didn't even bother with taking the map, it's ridiculously easy. Just shrouded Support Platforms in both entrances and backed them with reapers poping out of the webway gates honor guard secured the main entrance. When the monoliths teleported to the entrance of my base, I used relocation matrix to position all the Support Platforms (properly upgraded to D-Canons) to block the way and tear them appart when they came in range. Add Fragons coming form the webway strategically positioned BEHIND the monos and jumping Fire Prisms to ice the cake.

Dark Eldar: Archon + Maledction + 2 Wytches + 2 Warp Beasts + Drugs = Dark Waaaagh! If you play the mission with these units and assault everything through the front door like John Rambo you'll know how I played this mission. Use Ravagers for additional fun - I LOVE horrorfex bombs!

Tau: I went Kauyon, massed Fire Warriors to defend the base from insane distance, than went solo with imbarracudas. Search, destroy, heal with builders, rinse and repeat. None can stand before the imbarrac... err, the Greater Good.

Will try IG soon and will post the results. I can anticipate that I'll try massed HWTs + Lemans + Bassies to turtle, than upgrade the HWTs with Lascanon and Earthshake those monos :D

I used a GK squad + librarian and the honour guard GK + honour guard librarian to clear out the troops first, just shoot and them watch them all clump up and then I did smite and psychic inquisition. After they were cleared tac mass cleaned up the rest of the base.

Done this as Tau, SM and Eldar now.

Eldar is easy - cloak your base to defend it from attacks
Then 3x WS, 2x Seer Council, FS and mass WL will crush all the bases easily

SM is easier - Termie + honor guard lib, assault termie + fc, gk honour guard + chappy and normal gk. Thats an unbeatable force esp with 2x WotE, add in some deep striking dreads for increased base bashing speed.

Tau is always easy - 2x HH, 2x Drone Harbingers and 1 Pathfinder squad beats everything on all maps

I'm playing as IG now, I imagine all I'll do is get 3x bassies and defend them with 2x LR, Kasrkins, Assassin, Ogryns and CS. Scan the monoliths, earthshakers ftw. Base defense is easily handled with turrets and mass hwt.

You don't even have to leave your base.

Cap all three LPs nearby.

Defend and build up base.

Make lots of AV.

Wait for monoliths to show up and blow them away.

Stronghold over.

I agree with my fellow posters, as you only have to destroy the four monoliths and they even come to you, this is an easy stronghold IMO.
I played it with Space Marines and Chaos on HARD.

With SM, I built up my defenses and teched up. Except some deep striked dreads to destroy the necron buildings at the border of the map I teched and defended.
When I was told that the monoliths awaken I found them teleporting to my front entrance. However, with dreads, termies, laspreds and rocket marines with WotE and Orbital Bombardement the monoliths could not advance and got destroyed.

The necron abomination was purged by the might of the Imperator!

With Chaos, I went a slightly different route. Again, after building up the defenses as described above, I mainly concentrated on Hell Talons and horrors in order to attack the four monoliths before awakening since I didn´t want to face all four at the same time as I did with SM.
The necron attack scarabs I lured to my base and destroyed them there when they tried to kill my talons.
After that, with hell talons, horrors and oblits I was able to take out three monoliths before the awakening.
When the remaining monolith appeared it was short work, even if he had Pariahs, warriors, lord and the odd flayed one squad in tow.

Finally, the monoliths evaporated and the undivided chaos had showed his strength wth the Alpha Legion as it´s champions!

Has anyone ever completed the level by destroying the central power system?

I just finished the level with the Eldar on hard and it really was hard! I couldn't do much except sit and wait for the monoliths to come to me.

I got slammed the second I tried to attack the middle let alone going for te relic or anything.

Taking the centre doesn't do anything. There was going to be an extra part at the end where you had to destroy it, but it got cut for whatever reason. Which is a shame, since the stronghold feels really incomplete without it, both gameplay and fluff-wise (blowing up a few Monoliths somehow makes all the Necrons shut down - er, what?).

So yeah, don't get too close to the middle unless you really want those slag deposits.

Oh well I'm glad I didn't bother then! Thanks for the tip!

I just finished it with Chaos before reading the obvious solution here. Anyway, I thought “Aww, crap, I have to really rush this before the nasty evil Monoliths appear!” and set about pumping out as many CSM as possible while sending my honour guard and Lord to cap at least one CL. It turned out to be rather (also deceivingly) easy and with only one squad of CSM I made my way to the second one (west) and when my second squad of CSM were finished I rushed the east CL too.

At this point I held three CL with only my honour guard, Lord and two squads of CSM leaving my base undefended and my economy in shambles. This I would pay for later on as I was unable to tech up and most of my req went into replacing killed Marines.

I now tried for the secondary objective, destroying the Summoning Core using a Champion and a freshly produced CSM squad, a venture which ended in disaster although I managed to save both Champion and squad, something that saved the entire mission as it turned out that the assaults on my based now begun. My hold on the three CL were shaky at best and when I daringly tried for the fourth the whole thing went to whatever bad place Chaos things go to, I don’t know. Hello Kitty heaven probably. Anyway, Necron soldiers came pouring out of the Monoliths hell bent on taking back every single CL (I never managed to capture the fourth) and after bitter fighting I was pushed back from the north and east CL’s but through a miracle, not a single squad lost (although one CSM squad was reduced to a single Marine). At this point I had four CSM squads of which one was defending my base and the other three was protecting the west and south CL’s along with the Lord and honour guard Cultists as retinue.

I realised that I had to tech up and get my power claws on a lot of vehicles before doing anything else. All said and done I set about building my force while fending off an increasing amount of assaults which now contained a lot of Tomb Spyders and Heavy Destroyers. After teching up completely and getting a Predator and four Hell Talons operational (and I just love the Hell Talon voice!) I launched an attack against the east CL, capturing it. I then assigned a squad of CSM, a squad of Possessed Marines led by a Chaos Sorcerer and a Predator the task of taking out the Summoning Core supported by four Hell Talons. Halfway through the mission a massive Necron attack was launched to take back the east CL and the Hell Talons were sent back to support the defence and then fend off an attack against the now unprotected base. I now decided it was time to take the fourth CL so I sent my Lord with his retinue, two squads of CSM and the Talons to take it and when they got there I teleported in Obliterators. This proved to be a second pivotal moment in the battle as my assault was countered by a massive wave of Tomb Spyders, Destroyers of every kind and Pariahs (not to mention Necron Warriros) but I managed to hold fast losing my honour guard Cultist squad and a Champion (as well as four Talons) but at least the Necron forces were depleted.

Capturing the fourth CL and recuperating my forces it was no time to finish what I started and take out the Summoning Core. It turned out to be a breeze, my strike team ploughed through their puny forces and on the way back I used by Hell Talons (again supporting) to sneak attack the south Monolith while sending the two squads of CSM guarding the south CL through the front door. It was essentially over now, I used the two Marine squads to reinforce the guards at the east CL and then sending the whole shebang in to destroy the corresponding Monolith then moved the entire force up to do the same against the north Monolith but stopping on the way to destroy the centre power supply. The final Monolith was crushed moments later and it was mission complete.

Not the easiest stronghold I’ve played but I made two key errors: First I should’ve taken out the second base to the NE and second I should’ve teched up a bit more and destroyed the Monoliths one by one instead of trying to capture all CL at once. Or, I should’ve just waited for the mountain to come to Muhammed.

this is easily the easiest stronghold.:ion:

Difficulty: Normal

Race: Eldar

Okay, so I'm not that good with Eldar and hadn't played them in a while, but I pretty much messed up here. Even so, I still won. This shows how easy this mission really is.

I had no honour guard whatsoever, but that doesn't matter, really. My main mistake was to go for the monoliths too soon and not withdrawing with (minor) losses. This combined with the fact that there are only the three strategic points in your base meant that teching went slowly as heck because of all the replacements I had to make.

I mean, I should at least have made sure to gather a larger force than I did (my guardians, two reapers, one banshee squad, farseer) before taking on a monolith, given all the forces and the turrets which attack you.

In the end, I was lucky that I had shrouded most of my base (except for two of the LPs, which was bloody stupid of me), so any Necron forces would just sit idly in there while I could muster up some forces and take them out. Also, I took out two of the monoliths and, well, about nothing else except some minor structures.

When the monoliths showed up, I'd finally finished teching; had four dark reaper squads, farseer with a fledgling seer council, three brightlance platforms (only one of which I ended up using) and two wraithlords. Firedragons, more wraithlords and a harlequin were on their way. Took the monoliths out without a problem.

But sheesh, so close. Closer than it should have been, considering. So, posting here mainly to show how it shouldn't be done.

I played the IG and took the defencive stance. Got the three points, made some generators, upgraded them and built ton of troops with plasma guns, four heavy weapons, a pair of artillery pieces, hellhounds and about 30 minefields around the entrances to the bases. The mines, artillery and the heavy weapons kept all of the troops from entering the base. then when the monoliths came, I had all of my troops go at them one at a time and WHAM! done like dinner.

SO basically everyone is saying is that just let the four monoliths come to your base and just destroy them? Wow. I have to get my teching going as tau. It's time to build lots of hammerheads, skyray, barracudas, crisis suits, firewarriors, god bless the tau empire and fight till the greater good lasts.

Ideally, no. Work your way around the map and whittle away at them.

Just don't sweat the Monos if they get up and running.
Tau have the easiest Monolith counter ever.
Chain EMPs.
What is it with people ignoring the kick-ass Stealth Team nowadays.

"I see your Shas'la is as big as mine" ... or something like that.

Eldar -
Takes a while, and you have to build the defenses up first, but get 3 squads of Fdragons w/ Falcons and 2 FP's. Jump around a bit and a monolith goes down in about 20s each.

Eldar, Hard

I played this a few times with two different methods to see how they went.

The first method was the easier of the two by far. The overall strategy is to turtle in your base and let the Monoliths awaken and come to you. Just claim the three points near your Webway Assembly and build up your troops and defences. You have plenty of time to get a full army plus as many cloaked turrets as you want - you'll be rolling in power and requisition so you can build extra HQs if you want to raise your turret limit past the six from your first HQ. The Necrons only launch weak attacks on your base, mostly standard Necron Warriors with the occasional higher tier unit. Even the awakened Monoliths aren't much trouble. They regenerate health like crazy but focused fire from everything you have brings them down pretty quickly. A Brightlance support platform or two works wonders in making them more vulnerable.

Method number 2 is to do what the mission probably wants you to do - capture and hold the critical points to deny power to the Monoliths, and then go and destroy them one by one. This is a lot harder because you have to defend a larger area and get attacked more often. The Eldar have a big advantage in their Webway Gates which mean you can bring instant reinforcements to each critical location, and their vehicles (not counting Wraithlords) are fast enough to redeploy quickly too (just be careful they don't stray into the central base by themselves). It's helpful to kill off the Necron bases that the Eldar Guardian warns you about to the north and south of your base - two Fire Prisms and a few squads of Warp Spiders / Dark Reapers is enough to deal with them and will do fine for the four Monolith bases too, for that matter. I avoided using melee troops in my attack forces because the Necron turrets are pretty nasty. I preferred to blast the turrets with Fire Prisms and use my troops to support them against approaching Necron infantry. The Necrons have a Relic base on the far side of the map from your base. You don't need to have the relic to win the mission but it does help, since building the Avatar lets you build up a crazy huge army. Similarly, the Summoning Core objective is helpful to complete but not necessary.

Use Method 1 if you just want to get through this mission fairly quickly. Use Method 2 if you want more of a challenge and like more lengthy, grindy battles.
