What kind of music would you guys like to see in DoW 2? Personally, I would like the old music, and some of the music from Chaos Gate.

Edit: in case you guys don't know what I'm talking about, heres a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5as4OL3TRI

I do not think much of the music in DoW, take it or leave it, it doesn't create any kind of impression it's just bland and boring.

I would like something orchestral but also rememberable for DoW2, something done by or similar to Hans Zimmer (Gladiator/Thin Red Line) would be excellent but I doubt any game budget would stretch that far.

I prefer Jeremy Soule over Zimmer any day, thank you. Hope he makes a return.

Jeremy Soule would be my second (and probably more realistic) choice, I like his work in Oblivion, CoH and Guild Wars, a great improvement to his bland DoW days, just hope he gets it right if he does return.

Soule would be a great choice since he did the coh and dow music, and I really like his style.

I think that whoever Relic decided to get on the job will do fine as long as he is not pressed to make too many tracks. Fewer but better. There were only few tracks in the original DOW but some of them pretty good, which can't be said about WA. The whole concept of having different layes of instruments as separate tracks was heresy :)

Re-animate Gustav Holst. Zombie Holst will make awesome DoW music.

There's also that Gergorian monk group in Germany named Gregorian (http://www.gregorianmastersofchant.com/). For some reason I always associate chanting with 40k, and these guys do a hell of a lot of it.

The original music was good in my opinion. Not a masterpiece, but nevertheless, good. I hope they do something similar in DoW 2 (although of course, better).

What I would like is for the game to recognize when battle is going on, and change the music. Older games such as Total Annihilation and Battle Realms had this feature, and made the game better.

I want mr jeremy soule to do it, after the music he has done for games like oblivion, I can think of nobody else that would be suitable. I'd like really epic music like on the DoW2 site but also like the music from DoW (force commander theme anyone?) For me, the music in DoW is one of the best bits!

Soule is overrated but I'm honestly not familiar with other North American game composers. Needs to be militaristic and epic.

just out of curiosity, has anyone else played a game called "black moon chronicles"?(based on the french comic book les chroniques de la lune noir). the music in that game was just out of this world, i actually used to listen to it while playing many other games(DOW and Mechwarrior 4 come to mind; it combined PERFECTLY with the ambience of MW4). it was done by a french dude called pierre esteve, and it's possibly THE best game soundtrack i've ever heard. if relic could somehow get that dude to collaborate at least partially to DOW 2's soundtrack, i'm going to freaking die of joy.

although the music in the DOW2 site is just absolute win too.

examples of the music i'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfabJ--2xbg

I'd some electric guitar music, sort of like the prologue in the Halo games (i.e. the Microsoft Game Studios music).

I'd so much like to see Soule again working on it. Mainly due to the fact, that I feel in love with his music in the ancient total annihilation. I think there is almost no game music that has yet beaten his battle theme.

Alternatively, the person who created the music in warcraft 3 you get in a nightelf defeat.

Total Annihilation had the best soundtracks for it. It was mostly Orchestral, and was perfect for the game. Grand battles truly felt grand, desesperation took more of a toll with the correct music. The building stage of the game was actually a lot more enjoyable because of the superbly done music. If Soule worked on TA, Soule MUST work on DoW2

Whatever is playing on the website right now is perfect. If they are using that music plus expanding on it, I will be one happy camper. :)

I so hope Jeremy Soule will work on the music. Soule's soundtracks are among the best in the computer and video game industry in my opinion. You only have to listen to tunes from Supreme commander, CoH and DoW to see why.

Truthfully, I'd wish for Bear Mcreary to the music for DoW2(maybe for HW3:D?). But that's a pipe dream...

I don't know that I would call Soule's work "standard rts music". His Imperial themes, for instance, where spot on and totally set the atmosphere for the game back in vanilla DoW. And then there's his many other works outside of RTS-fare.

Jeremy Soule (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Soule) is to the gaming industry's musical scores as John Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Williams) is to the movie industry's musical scores. He's the premier genius of his age, of his genre.

Jeremy Soule + DoW2 = Win

What I would like is for the game to recognize when battle is going on, and change the music. Older games such as Total Annihilation and Battle Realms had this feature, and made the game better.

Battle Realms had good music, but you know what had better music? Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. It's depressing so few people played that game (and that it was buggy and poorly patched and the company went down the drain), because that had the best music of any PC game, ever. I mean, sure, Zelda has better music. Metroid Prime has better music. But I couldn't name any other game with better music than TA:K. Everyone oohs and ahs over Oblivion and Guild Wars, but I found their music bland and uninspiring in the extreme, strings, strings and more strings. World of Warcraft has good music, I might add. So yes, if they hunt down the TA:K composer and get the music for DoW 2 from him, I'll be in heaven.

Back on the Battle Realms point, I think that was a brilliant game and as regards music, it was both atmospheric and adjusted to the pace of the game, which I liked. I also liked how you could pick which tracks to play, yourself, if you didn't like the ones the game was giving you.

There are two sorts of music that would suit DoW 2: over-the-top death metal, and Gregorian chant, as someone has already mentioned. Orchestra is nice, but for the Space Marines, I just want to hear hymns to the Emperor sung by a really, really big choir. You can do impressive things with a massed choir, from plainsong to Carmina Burana mvts 1 and 2, which are some of the most threatening, thrilling pieces of music ever written. Eldar would need something sort of techno, sort of experimental, a little oriental, I think, and Chaos and Orks, death metal. I actually think that it's the Tau or the Imperial Guard who would get stirring, patriotic orchestral music - I'm thinking Jupiter from the Planets suite or something like that.

EDIT: Just as regards techno soundtracks, most of the time it sounds terrible, but probably the second best soundtrack of all time would have to go to the Metroid Prime series. The first game's title music was a really good techno theme which captured the feel of the gameplay enormously well, and a couple of the environments (e.g. Magmoor Caverns) got great techno sound effects too. (Though of course Phendrana Drifts and the Chozo Temple had the best music, but they weren't exactly techno). The second game's music was alost as good, in particular Sanctuary Fortress, Dark Samus and again the title screen. What I particularly liked about the title music is how they went to this tight electric guitar line about halfway through, if they used that kind of effect for, say, Dark Eldar, it would be pure win.

The music styles for the races (if all these are included) I would like is:

SM: Heroic, electric-guitary.
CSM: Dastardly, electric-guitary.
Eldar: Slightly techno.
Tau: Classical.
Necrons: Screechy.
Tyranids: Screechy.
Dark Eldar: Death metal.
Sisters of Battle: Holy-sounding.
Orks: Wild cacophony.

Akranadas

Ha what? Eldar Techno?

Eldar seem more to inspire more of a Gaelic kind of sounds from my point of view, a lot of flutes and strings.

Bad, Eldar aren't magic ;)

They need music that fits the mood of their mysterious ways, rather than music that sounds like they should be at a rave.

Hey, Akranadas: how about the bagpipes for Eldar? Oh, hang on, that's Celtic, not Gaelic.

I'm a little confused by the Tau using Classical. I thought the Asian themed music was going well for them, you know... with them being space Asians and all that.

I love that.

I'd like SM to get CoD4-style electric guitar tunes. I think that would be cool when they're deploying to kill the warboss and the nobz (if there's a mission like that).

Fish Of Doom: This composer is Pierre Esteve. I totally agree with you, for me BMC has some of the best music in gaming history. I don't think he is widely known so Relic will probably choose Inon Zur or Jeremy Soule, which is good too. But yes, Pierre Esteve would be my choice.
Edit: Of course, you wrote it was Pierre Esteve, I haven't noticed at first ;)
Edit2: examples you posted have low (youtube) quality. I would post link to better I'm just not sure if the site is legal :-\

SM + Electric Guitar? No! They are a gothic, monastic order - not headbangers. A little OT, but for the sake of argument, the same damn thing happened with the Prince of Persia franchise. The musical score in the Sands of Time were perfectly suited to the style, setting, and theme of the game. The scores that followed with the next two games totally ruined the atmosphere, especially in Warrior Within. It was simply terrible! I didn't feel like I was playing a game in the role of a Persian prince anymore at all. Even Jordan Mechner, the original game's creator and designer up to PoP:TSoT said that he didn't like the artistic direction that PoP:WW had taken.

No, Jeremy Soule nailed the SM theme back in DoW and I see no reason to deviate from the direction he's given it. New tunes, sure, but let's keep the SM themes in the same genre - it already works perfectly for them. Same for the IG if they are ever featured.

And Jeremy Soule for DoW2's musical score FTW!! :D

Music ? Well the Space Marines should have some Gothic choir music without a doubt, the imperial guard should have some music that is like the music right in the start of the IG campaign in WA, that was great music :) Or to put it in another way, orchestral scores with a martial tune to them. Something inspiring, something gothic and imperial and for the masses.
For the eldar ? Some etheral haunting music that holds remnants of the great empire they once had but is now but a distant memory.

Otherwise, just epic ! Purely epic music ! This is warhammer 40k ! This is entire worlds embroiled in battle with great armies fighting each other.

Composer ? Well Jeremy soule did a good job i would say. Possibly Inon Zur, but that is because he made that intro music for the IG campaign which is just perfect.
Otherwise.. Ben Houge ? His music for Arcanum was brilliant...

Definitely Soule. His music was excellent. I'd also like to see more haunting more for Eldar and Chaos as well, as it sometimes sounds bombastic.

DoW2 site music is on the right track, also more Soule.

Eldar music could be more like faster paced ambient, should they be in and orks have bit rock in theirs, like GLA had in C&C Generals.

Make it epic like vanilla dow. Some of the music there was pretty good (unfortunately the music in the continued series was not as great as the original game). There was one song that when I heard it I literally went mindless and was drawn right into the game. It was amazing and indescribable.

Yeah, the track they played during that level where you had to jump ASM squads across that chasm was the bomb. Some sort of monastic chant, methinks it was.

Soule for DoW2!!

I hope in E3 they will announce the composer for the music, it shouldn't be much of a secret now since the DoW2 website was launched, and as mentioned before in the thread, it's right on the mark.

Frankly, eventhough I personally liked Soule's interpretation in DoW the most, out of all DoW games, I hope that he's the one doing it for DoW2.

Eventhough this is a wild guess at the moment I really get the feeling the DoW2 website music was done by him, it has the same "feel" of Soule. If not then the person doing the musical score is making a superb job and we should expect another great series of epic songs.

I hope this will be cleared soon, especially during E3.

I always rather liked Trent Reznor's work on the Quake soundtrack, I reckon he could do a decent job on the project, the monastic chanting and the like is totally overdone in 40k games, it's good in small doses but not constantly shoved down your throat. A gritty grungey industrial sound like Reznor produces would fit an dark RTS like 40k well.

Failing this highly improbable idea, definitely Soule.

But... That's what the Space Marines are. Monks in space with highly sophisticated gear. I can't picture a headbanging Space Marine listening to grunge or metal whilst shouting, "FOR THE EMPEROR!!" or counseling, "To admit defeat is to blaspheme against the Emperor."

That said, Trent's contributions to Quake were just what that game needed.

Captain Wicha
3rd Jul 08, 9:49 PM
my opinion is that the eldar should have a more classical score of something akin to more of a waltz style... it would have to be touched up a bit... but to me it would sum up both their arrogant nature and quiet sophistication quite nicely... anybody else feel the same way?

Londinium
5th Jul 08, 11:29 AM
Quite aware of that, I just said it's overdone, it's like...right lads lets make this music sound ominous and throw in a bit of gregorian chanting and then nip down to the pub!. It's overdone, sure I like a bit of it, but I'd like a broader audio range.

Reznor's music is not just grungey/industrial archetypal music, listen to Ghosts and you'll see he can do much more, it's not like it would ever happen, but I reckon he could easily do it, with a unique sound at that.

They have some chants too, such as the title screen of the Medieval Total War series.

I'd love to hear some dynamic music, you outnumber the enemy in battle it plays some guitar. You're having an epic battle ? violin. You're being massacred? sad music. If they could get Harry Gregson-Williams (Think i got it right) it would be an epic win but I think thats not gonna happen. Of course race theme music should be suitable to the race however.

Thead
6th Jul 08, 11:12 AM
I'd love the music to be like that of Total Annhiliation, of course with variation per race. More tribal or chaotic for the Orks, evil and menacing for Chaos, military, classical and gothic rolled into one for the Imperium :D

The way the music changed depending on what was happening ingame in TA was also excellent. If they could pull off a soundtrack even close to as memorable as the one from Total Annihilation, I would be megahappy.
