View Full Version : Things You DON'T Want Changed

There are always things that you get attached to in games, ie. Starcraft fans being outraged when the Carrier was replaced with the Tempest. What are somethings that you want to stay the same for DoW 2?
Personally I'd like it if most of the Space Marine voices stayed the same, when I first played the demo of DoW vanilla I was instantly attached to their bad ass voice acting. It'd be pretty hard to top them IMO, though the new Dreadnought voice sounds decent (albeit a bit barbaric). I don't think they should use the exact same dialog (thatwould be lazy :P), but should use the same actors and effects for sure. Also, I personally think that the music is brilliant and I would greatly appreciate it if they used the same composer. I think the music fits almost perfectly with the W40k universe, nothing beats the little violin stuff from DoW vanilla.
Is there anything that you guys have gotten attached to throughout your DoW careers?

the voice acting in DOW was pretty top notch considering that most of the time all they had to go off of was a small plastic sculpture and some lines of dialog from a rule book or two...
that said... one thing ive always liked about the dawn of war series (other than how violent and awesome it is, which thankfully wont change) is the fact that they captured the essence of hero characters... yet they were still killable...
i remember my first time playing the demo... it was on biffys peril (like the only map the demo had, yet still one of my faves!) i had just produced a generator a barracks and two squads of marines then i looked over and who comes charging into my base un-escorted Mr. force commander... then something amazing happened... my marines killed him...
what i mean is... what i liked about dawn of war is the fact that the heroes where very powerful, yet in their own right very killable also... other than in games like warcraft III where the heroes win the battles and the army is just your heroes personal entourage to make it look like your hero isnt doing all the work... its something that while small and stupid, ive really liked about the game and i wish wouldnt change, but all the talk about war-gear and drops scares me that they are going in more of a warcraft III direction

Wargear and drops will be equippable by non-hero units, too, from my impression. So you can uber up your normal units and then their uber hero unit won't be so badass.

The only thing I grew attatched to was Sindri's voice actor. If they bring him back (again) I'll be pleased enough - even though he probably won't have quite the same raspy, evil tone Sindri had.
Everything else I can live with being scrapped/redone. :)

You know, I had the same thought about Sindri. He was badass. But he is afterall..dead. Sigh.

Isador died in the same game... before Sindri and Sindri was much 1337er.

The Carrier was reimplemented because of all the outrage :P
DoW can't be the same, there isn't going to be much base building, however I do look forward to better pathing. Also I hope the AI doesn't get any more complex than it is now, I like it when they only do what I want them to.

persistent bodies strewn about really made dawn of war for me , especially with the imperial guard , seeing the cost of that hilltop in the dead of my troopers comrades piled up all around was something special, but it seems in games anymore the more detail and lighting you get the less casualties stay on screen.

I think every aspect of DoW2 can and should be improved/changed. So everything should be at least improved. Since we didn't saw any on screenshots, I want uber to stay in the game (relic units).

I want Relic units, I hope DOW 2 will have Relic units and keep the tradition going. :)

None for me. There are many things I loved about DoW, but none that I grew so attached to as to want them remain unchanged. Improved upon on the other hand...

We already know melee finishing moves are in, so I'm happy so far.

I'd like to see hard counters... but wait, those already got changed. :(

I think that the range system is more complicated à la CoH. In a Q&A, they said that plasma was not the best choice against orks because of the rate of fire, it does work on them but it's not effective against masses. I prefer that accuracy and RoF plays a bigger role in the counter system (not just armor penetration). So hopefully big pred's laser will hurt infantry (if they can hit them).
The emphasis on storyline as they had in dow1. Winter Assault was great, but DC and SS were horrible.

Persistent bodies all the way. It's a beautiful thing to look across the battlefield and see each of your skirmishes and battles replayed by the corpses lying about.

I have to agree with the persistant bodies. The valiant defence of your base is shown by the hundreds of bodies strewn around the place. I played one match on a mod (can't remember which, but it allowed you to get tons of stuff so Annihilation is my best guess) against Imp Guard with me as SM. Made a huge HB wall and 5 mins after the game started, literally hundreds of guard ran into my base and were mown down by the sheer amount of fire. All that remaind afterwards were a handful of dead marines and a slope up to my base that was paved in bodies, you couldn't see the ground in most parts it was that dense =P

I'd like to see the persistant bodies expanded upon: A ragdoll effect could be added to bodies so that
1: The bodies would all be in different positions. There isnt much as lame ass seeing 500 orks all dead and lying in the exact same way.
2: You'd push guys aside when you walked over them That would just be AWSOME.

keeping physics turned on for dead bodies would DESTROY YOU RARRRGH

Everyone and his wife's already mentioned persistent bodies, finishers and mortal heroes so...actually I can't think of anything else I'd miss :/
And persistant ragdoll corpses would be of epic proportions and requires the PC to match...you could use that small hill of guardsman bodies as cover :D

Things I don't want changed
- The level of violence and awesomeness that DoW brought. I want blood and 'extreme' kills only MORE. Dude i'll never forget then first time i saw a FC climb on to the bloodthirsters back and smash it's face in! Thats what I want only more insane and more blood spilling :D
- The same high quality voice acting and soundtrack, I dont want it all the same but when playing DoW, i really felt like they were units from the W40K universe because of some of the things said and how they would say it. Also, the soundtrack was epic! Great tunes like the original are a must for me.
- Finally, I want persistent bodies in DoW2. After large games that go on for an hour or two, you want to be able to scroll across the map and see all the guys you have killed. It adds a sense of realism but its also just cool to see something you killed 10 minutes ago is still lying in a pool of blood.
Anyway, thats just what I think.

I want the Comical voices and over all feel of the orks to remain.

Yes more persistent gore plz.
In COH, the persistent tank wrecks and terrain damage, helped to both change the battlefield as the game progresses, and give a good indication that the battle was escalating.
You'd also feel nostalgic when you see a memorable crater.
Isn't this just turning into a wishlist?

a bad-ass intro movie like the original DoW1

I wish they would bring back the original nob voices, they sound nowhere near as tough now. other than that, just what mr kid says, keep the same feel for orks, and i'll be happy.

I have to agree with most what the others said. pretty much everything used in CoH, transferred in DoW2. but one thing i dont want change, let the tau remain a playable faction, and not something for next year or whatever. i would love it if they appear in the game.

What Sigma said, just for my favourite wussy, pointy eared, cheese-eating surrender monkeys. Please Relic - I'd sell my soul to get the Eldar in this game!

Although the Tau are awesome, I doubt they'll make it in the vanilla DoW2. The first 4 races were the iconic Warhammer 40k races. Tau are great for an expansion set.

I want the Comical voices and over all feel of the orks to remain.
I want this, and the grey knight's voice actor/effects used for as many space marine units as possible. "This is the judgment of the righteous, scum!" is one of the coolest-sounding lines in the game.

The problem is, persistent bodies just can't be done. One would need an amazing rig to make it possible to have persistent bodies on, and if dead body physics were included the game would be very high performance.
Sure it would be cool, but I remember that it couldn't even be done in CoH because of the bodies slowing down computers ten-fold.

Persistent bodies works just fine in DoW. Now persistent bodies with individual physics...just yeah...

maybe corpse could lose their physical interaction and become locked in place after 10 seconds or something

The really dynamic nature of extreme deaths needs to be preserved. There is something really satisfying seeing an Avatar impale a Space Marine. Likewise watching a naught break an orc's back is pretty cool. Bodies flying through the air, etc. That's the over the top violence, etc. that the 40k universe deserves!
