Newb Skirmish question?

I just got DOW:Gold and updated it fully. Will I be able to play with the new units (Air units) in skirmish and multi, or do I actually have to buy SS to get those? I read I can play the 5 races online, but is that only against other WA/Gold people, or will I be able to kill SOB/Cron/Tau too? If so, do I need a patch or anything special?

Sorry, I come from COH too, so OF was a little shock. The fact that the "expansion" starts by deleting the original shocked me, and then I tried DOW and it was all gamespy, so I wasnt sure if it would work like COH/OF did.

You'll only be able to play with people who are Still playing Original/WA. You won't be able to play wth anyone in SS, which is most people.

So If you want to play where most people are, you'll Need to get SS. And You'll be able to play with 7 Races and Everyone else on Soulstorm.

But then You Won't have Tau Or Necrons. You'll be able to kill them in SS, but you won't be able to play as them unless you get Dark Crusade too, Raising the total Race count to 9 from the already insanely copious 7.


There are still a few people playing the old games, but not so many. I got on the Original at random a little while ago and there were a good 40 people online.


So If you want all of the Races in multiplayer then You'll Need to Buy DC and SS. And also, the Air units are an addition exclusive to SS. So You'll need SS if you want ar units.

Gold edition = Original + Winter assault
Plat edition = original + WA + DC

Original = Ork Chaos SM Eldar

WA: Guards

DC: Tau Necron

SS: Air units and Sisters/dark eldar

Can only play with people who have the same expansions as you. But anyone can load up winter assault or original and play with you.. if you have friends who have it.

too much CoH compatabilitly can spoil you. sadly you need ALL the games to be current with every one else.

Thanks for the answers. I guess I am spoiled by OF now, because I dont really care about SOB/DE/Cron, so DC/SS doesnt offer me much, other then people to play against online.

I tried online last night and 8 people were playing, and only 1 game actually started in the 5-10 minutes I was there. I was hoping the originals would still let me kill off SS players, only using SM/Chaos. Oh well... Hopefully someone will have SS cheap since DOW2 was announced :)

Another silly question that I think was answered already... If I get DC, will I be able to play online with those people, or with DC/SS people? Does anyone still play DC? I really dont want to drop 40$ on SS, and I've seen DC for 10$.

For that matter, does SS have a good player base?

no if you buy DC you still cant play with SS players.

SS has a decent ammount of people on, about ~250 at the most and ~50 at night

You'll need SS if you want to play on the new maps as well.

SS is the newest and has the most players. I'd advise you to get it. Since a lot of people are unhappy with it at the moment, I suppose you might find it for a low price on ebay or something.
The good thing about getting DoW Gold first is that you'll be able to play most races online now. :)
