I love RTS games, and I love Dawn of war 2, but I find that the competition for head to head games is pretty intense. I am at a 13 loss, 1 win streak and am having one hell of a time getting my score up. I haven`t played online games for a long time so I am wondering if I have lost my competitive edge. I tend to enjoy playing the computer more since it is more relaxing but against humans the competition is extremely cutthroat.
Some games are good, they start off well and I am able to get a headstart in victory points over my opponents, however, there are some guys I am facing who pretty much defeat me while being at the full 500 points. The games are getting closer however which I would take as a sign of a maturing player.
Anyone else getting killed online? Share your grevences here! I do find that I need to practice to get better but it gets extremely demoralizing sometimes.

I'm better at team games, because I like to take a support role. Although I am doing well in all respects. Depends on which race I use, because i'm kinda switching around since I like them al lso much. I love the Eldar, but i'm intimidated to play them because of how they were in DoW, even though that doesn't matter anymore.
I'm one of the people doing the slaughtering >: )
Once you get used to the ebb and flow you'll find the game to be a lot easier, and you'll most likely start beating your opponents more often. Practice makes perfect!

Good advice, just won a team match now! I prefer working with a team than going solo.

I prefer team games than 1v1 in any game genre. I never do 1v1s in FPS games and I always play TDM, same goes for this game.
i've currently won every team game being the champion each time (total of 8 games so far). my record is messed up though due to a disconnect at the very end so my record shows a loss and a disconnect yet still shows me as champion in 8 out 8 games.

True test of skill is in 1 on 1's tho. TDM is too much fun tho...

I lost A LOT during my first few games. Now I'm losing mainly to people who are significantly higher ranked than me (I'm not sure if that's a skill ranking or if it's just an XP ranking thing, whether you win or lose.)
You'll get better, especially when you figure out what and what doesn't work. A friend of mine recommended the Extended/Charge Carapace for the Hive Tyrant today, and wow, that thing is brutal in the right situation! Might replace the Bonded (Invulnerable) Carapace.
3v3s are a lot of fun, especially with voice chat and some friends. Lots of fun! Except for the lag.

Same here. I don't usually play much online but I beat the expert AI a bunch of times and started to get bored with it. I won my first 3 games against rank 1 and 2s but then was up against rank 14-16s and got beat. I held out pretty good but I keep getting boxed in on the green 1v1 map.

I avoid 1v1's because they're just a bit boring. I do like competitive play but I don't think the maps really work and without supply lines the game just doesn't feel right. In 3v3 it all works fine though.
The only problem with 3v3's is allies. Try to find a few players who you know aren't going to lag out, go afk or simply play really badly and team games are alot more fun.

DOWII needs a Tales of Heroes, thats how I learned how to play COH.

1 on 1 I do fine enough in, though have suffered many losses to crashes/disconnects and lost many wins (as in not recorded due to crashing after clicking 'contine').
Team matches I've been unfortunately getting paired up with newbs most of the time, and against high ranking enemies.

I am in the same camp. I love rts games, I love DoW, but I am woefully horrible at it. I mean, I am just terrible. So, naturally, I get my ass handed to me every time I try to join a online game. So, I don't. Comp stomp and single payer for me it always is, and always shall be. :(

in team games i get slaughtered cause i get a bad team... 1v1 im 6 wins 1 lose, the lose was because i D/C :( i just win really easily on the jungle map using eldar i destract there primary forces with exarch and 2 platforms early on and my gaurdians get all the REP/power points and then the 1 of the 2 vic points up top or both depending on how the battle in the south area is going. (normally good) and then i just macro my guys around caping rec points and harasses enemy power. (just distract the hell out of the main enemy force play geurilla while u build up and maintian more power + and rec + and keeping VP and 2:1 or 1:1:1 and if u serious business and he's a scrub 3:0

Currently I'm trying hard to be a bit more competitive in 1v1 but... I suck at the moment.
I'm a lot better in team games and managed to pull off a few tide turners wich I can't seem to do in 1v1. :(
Still practicing though ^^

I'm 30ish wins, 9 losses (5 of these are disconnects from the sync error bug) in 1v1, 6 wins 3 loses in team. I've sworn off team for now though, because I keep disconnecting right at the start, resutling in an automatic loss, and screwing over the team I was playing for.
I've been pretty much slaughtering everything with nids. I did just get decimated by howling banshee spam though.

Well, my start was a bit rocky, I picked Orks and Kommando, and the first 2 games I was completely annihilated, with the enemy having 500 points left (1on1 ranked), but after that, I just used some of my creativity and up it went :)
If you're getting your ass handed to you, it might be that you're countering some stuff wrong. The balance discussion section is a nice place to start hoarding sweet gaming knowledge.

seconded that.
Doestn't mean I don't get slaughtered in 2 v 2 as I get slaughtered in 1 v 1 though :D
i think COH online player are getting the head up on all the rest.
Then why do I sux soo much at this game? o_O
i think COH online player are getting the head up on all the rest.
I've only played CoH's single player and I'm doing quite well for myself ;)
I'd agree with what Oakwarrior said. Try be a bit more creative, take note of what your opponent does, and practice practice practice! I lost my first two games as well trying out things, but now that I've got the swing the only thing I've lost to are Steam's authentication servers.

I have a 45 game win streak and I'm ranked somewhere in the top 20.
.... Sorry :-\
I fail at CoH and I'm still in the top 100. It's not about past experience, it's about common sense and experience with unit fragilities. The key to this game is to retreat at the right time and to use cover. Experience covers the former, common sense covers the latter. Every other element of this game is just ridiculously easy and I guarantee you that the two factors I listed are the ones tripping you up.

i dont know if this will help anyone, but the tactic I use now that works pretty well is too look at the enemy team setup and judge whether to go shooty or melee.
2 sm/eldar = melee
2 ork/nid = shooty
this really only applies to SM and maybe orks.
as people have started to learn, I'm finding my ASMs becoming much less useful in many more situations and I'm starting to see the true power of Tacs as a result
Moved to beta discussions, since this is a discussion. About the beta.

If I play SM I have no problems in 1v1. I have a win streak of 10 with them (played 10 automatch games). But I have massive problems with Orks and Nids. I just cant win, although the only armies I seem to play against is SM when I am them. With Eldar I am doing ok I have won 4 games and lost 3. I can beat nids and Orks pretty well with them but against SM I always lose.
I dont want to say SM are unbalanced as I am sure other people have no problem against them I just cant beat them.

I've clocked up 9 wins from 12 1v1 head-to-heads, so i'm happy at the moment, loving the Warboss.
Sticking with the Mekboy in 3v3s, but I can't get many good games set up usually. They're more enjoyable than 1v1s still. Since I always end up with some random people my wins are about 50/50, need to poke more relic dolts!

Eh, I'm not having much luck in this game the few games I've played. I'm used to DoW too much, and wasn't really feeling CoH at all. Now I have a mix of the two's features and that's not helping too much for me.
I just know this game is simple, but it's a new experience for me. I'll have to find help =s

I usually do the slaughtering in a team match if i have reliable allies
otherwise it always feels like im the only one doing the work

COH skills carry over a lot here. People who got good at COH are more practiced at the more mobile warfare, and about using and evading weapon teams. Plus... it tends to be the more hardcore element that plays betas of games before release. So keep practicing, watch some replays, you'll get better eventually.

I played versus the AI, beated this sucky AI at expert and went Online. Teambattles first cause it should be easier with two allies. After the first victorys followed the 1v1 challenge and i slaughtered a newb. Was painful to watch for me how he get butchered by ervery step he goes out of his base. The next 3 1v1 I got stomped in the ground, the best part was as my ASM came fresh from base and the jump button won´t work the entire game with this squad. After the three beatings i decided to not play 1v1 anymore. I suck at this gamestyle and its not half the fun like 3v3. Sure, i lose some games here to, especially if one of my teammates suxx big time and/or doesn´t know how the game works but thats the price of random teammates.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I am not a hardcore player so my playstyle is more casual. However, the switch to 3v3 has been helpful I was able to be on the winning side and even to be the Champion a couple of times (Whoo hoo!!). I feel more comfortable having an avenue of responsibility, rather than having to worry about the whole front. I can micromanage a small front much better.
Cheers!

Is something wrong with trueskill? HEAPS of people are on huge win streaks. I guess it must just be due to the thousands of people wanting to play head to head 1v1 auto or something. One would think that players consistently doing well would be pitched against each other?

I never really played RTS online, even though I played most of them since dune2.
What I fail with most is microing at the same time as keeping track of the other units im currently not microing. A matter of practice im sure. At about 50/50 win-loss in 1on1 but haven't that many hours put down to the game. (around 15 1on1s played). Stumbled upon 2 guys who I started to play 3on3 with tho and its nice as a learning experience. Even though im fully aware of that it doesnt equal 1on1 you still get a hang of the game that way and you can try out different units without getting steamrolled.
It's 50-50 for me, sometimes I'm the champ, and occasionally just get beaten back.
So trueskill is keeping a watchful eye on me :c

Yeah I am getting beat up pretty bad. I do fine untill they start bringing vehicles. The missle and plasma guys can't hit moving targets at all so their dreds just walk up to me and murder my guys.

i have been doing ok i love 3v3 but like people have said already you get some dud players, for instance
i just finished the hardest win of all my games so far, i had 2 space marine players as allies 1 was a apothacary the other a techmarine i was eldar warp spider exarch, the enemies were all space marine 2 force commanders and 1 techmarine. We were on the argus desert map i took the top VP. The game was basicly them only protecting the middle (never pushing even when i ran my avatar into the enemy line they just sat there thinking oooohhhh pretty avatar). any way we won with 30 VP points to spare, but i really find it hard to play (and win) if you team doesnt back you up. Oh and i was getting slaughtered so i retreated my squads just to see them run right into the enemy, take a guess yep the techmarine thought it was a good idea to put a relay at the front line.
Sorry about the rant above
a good strategy i find with eldar is using shurican plats to cover Vp's to atleast slow capture i use warp spider to harass points and when i get him i rush avatar and wraith lords into the enemy while spider caps points.
hey if any one wants to team up with an okay player (believe me in not the best but i try my best to help allies) then add me on steam my id is goofy_goober_247.

So far, I have 3 wins and 3 losses. The 3 losses were my first games, the 3 wins happened yesterday. Inbetween that I practiced with the AI on easy, then hard. I followed Sun Tzi's advice. If you know your army, you will win some battles, if you know yours and your enemy's you will win almost every battle. However if you do not know your army, you will lose every single battle.
I know some aspect of my army, this is why I have been able to win (of course, with the power axe, holy bolter and enough Emperor soul crushing yells to the enemy to name a few helping aides). But I also took note of a few things and adapted to the ebbs and flows of the game.
I knew my moment had arrived after I won a game against a nid player who had me down to 37 points to his 281. I crushed everything he threw at me and dominated the map. I was quite suprised he quit, he was still the champion though. Thank the Emperor for rage quitting! :}
Also played against another SM, we had a very early clash which lasted for almost two minutes, that was a very long two minutes mind you. In the end, I lost a scout sqd and retreated to my base with the avatar and 25% of my second scout sqd, but hey! I came back and won!! :D
I know its too soon, but i am beginning to enjoy this ^^
