Man, I can never remember having so much frustration installing a game. I have been at it for almost an hour, and as of now I think Windows Live has froze up.
I opened the game and began to install. I had some problems reading the disc, but got that sorted out. That may have been my system, not the disc. So -
I begin to install. Enter the CD key. No problem. But wait, I can;t select where to place the install file. Install puts them on "C" drive. That drive for me is reserved for Vista. Not anymore.
Game installs. I Steam to start the game. As it starts, Zone Alarm keeps popping up. My fault, but annoying. I click through, allowing access for each file. I try to run the game, I get a Steam message "Game Unavailable, try again later." I try twice. I open Steam and take a look at "My Games." It seems DOW II is updating. Why in the Emporer's name did I need to get a "Game Unavailable" message? That is confusing. I am glad I had the where-with-all to check through the My Games Interface.
Okay, patches. It freezes. I wait about 5 minutes. I still get the "Updating Message." Okay. I figure it froze. I exit, restart Steam. This time it tells me the game is ready. I start, waiting on the edge of my seat in anticipation.
I catch some of the intro movie, pretty cool I might add.
Resolution needs set. A message for Steam regarding my CD Key is occupying the lower right corner of the screen, obscuring my view of some menu buttons. It takes me a few minutes to get things set, and then to actually view the button on the lower part of the Steam CD Key message window can be closed. Resolution set, annoying window closed . . .
Now I have to register for Windows Live. Great. It takes me awhile of course, between trying to find a free username, and getting that stupid code typed correctly. And of course every time you click and submit, when something comes back, you have to re-enter some info. Arghhh......
Okay, I register, get my info, and start DOW II. Windows Live has now been "Downloading Profile" for about 20 minutes. It seems that has froze has well. It looks like I will have to restart.
I am really frustrated right now. It has been about an hour and a half, and I have not even fired a single shot! I don't know if anyone else has had such an adventure trying to install, but I hope THQ and relic are listening. I am sure if I have had this experience, others have also.
It seems way too much to make use of two third party online systems to play a game. I have never had a problem with Steam until this point. I am starting to have my doubts. Off to see if I can play DOW II. Or, I could finish building my Time Machine or perform some brain surgery on a flea, I bet both would be less frustrating at this point. :)
