I was defending against the tyranids in the northern-central region on Meridian, and I had my Assault squad just north of the central teleporter (uncaptured, 'cause it was a Defend mission), just having a look around, really.
I retreated the assault squad and, seconds later, for unrelated reasons, also retreated my main force.
I watched in horror as the whole group, instead of retreating to the nearer, northern SP, which they were supposed to be defending, the main force ran all the way out to the centre of the map, then over to the west, to the other SP, completely unrelated to the mission.
Of course, that left my defense point completely undefended and the mission ended before I'd even started to return to the place my guys should have stayed.
Even if the main force were following the retreat of the assault squad (not entirely sure if consolidating retreating forces to a single point is a feature of the game), the Assault squad really shouldn't have retreated all the way over to the other side of the map in the first place :/
