I believe courage is the factor that allows you to recover from supression. So, if you're a Tac Marine squad sitting in hard cover, you can take heavy bolter fire all day and your courage will regenerate faster than it decreases. However, actually become suppressed, your courage regeneration tanks, so unless you get out of the line of fire you're going to keep crawling.

Unlocking this after talking to SvedishFish a bit. Can anyone confirm that his answer is the correct one? Has this been labbed at all?

courage damage is 300, modified by range. upon reaching 0 (could be some other number) your squad is suppressed, or other squads within 10 feet or whatever measurement is used in game. It takes some time to suppress at a distance, and it might even be affected by cover ( i think it is because relic said they adjusted it so they dont suppress so easily against units in heavy cover during a beta patch.), but at short distances they actually get a bonus to courage damage which could equal instant suppression, which you see quit often in the game when a squad retreats out of range and the other charging squad is like 2 feet from the enemy and gets suppressed the second they open fire.

shotgun deals less overall courage at a time which is why squads get suppressed after a slightly prolonged fight with scouts knocking them back. Shotguns apparently lack the ability to suppress other squads near the ones you are shooting, but since shotguns are aoe, they will deal courage and regular damage to others caught in the blast.

this is the ability sluggas use to break suppression. it heals 99 courage and reduces courage damage taken by 100%, so they cant be suppressed during the duration.

alot of regular weapons deal none, or minor courage damage.
basically courage is morale and suppressed squads are broken squads.

You may have read wrong, or the wiki may have been edited, but it says it increases courage regeneration rate.
Effects of Suppression
Apply the following modifiers:
* Decrease maximum speed by 65 %
* Increase courage regeneration rate by 30 %
* Increase weapon cooldown time by 1900 %
But that doesn't seem right.

its right. the courage regeneration is there so they dont stay pinned for extremely long periods of time when they arent getting shot. the regeneration isnt enough to overcome the courage damage from weapons.
