I must say I was uber stoked to hear about this license some time ago as I have always been a 40k devotee.

played all the space hulk games both board and computer especially the old amiga ones, they rocked. I've played a few miniature games aswell and have a few figures that I've painted.

So how much do you like the Warhammer 40k universe, what's your exposure to it, and how stoked are you that relic are making a game using the richness of the 40k license?

now that is has finally been offically announced, i have started to check into the backstories, armies etc etc. might be cool if some of the avid fanboys put up some pics of their artwork, painting modeling, and armies...

just a suggestion.

I've been at Warhammer 40K for about 2 years now. I really liked the atmosphere of the universe, as I find it unique amongst so many other Sci-Fi universes, which is why I stuck to it. As for relic making a strategy game, well short of asking Blizzard to make the game, Games Workshop and THQ couldn't have picked a better company to make their Strat game.

I don't think Blizzard would be a good developer for a Warhammer 40K game, as they'd probably go for their old Warcraft/Starcraft RTS style and Dawn of War would probably end up as a Starcraft clone with 40K content.
Personally, I want something more.

I've never played it, but the premise sounds interesting. I'm guessing it'll be done similar to the Total War series, but better, of course.

I loved it about 10 years ago. My god, it was dark and nasty then. The backstories were awsome, and very well thought out and put together. The formations of the Marine chapters, the Horus Heresy that lead to the incapacitation of the emperor who is only now kept alive by the sacrifice of tens of thousands of rougue telepaths every day. The powers of chaos warping the lost and the damned into grotesque parodies of their former sleves.

heh. Its been a while since I've dug that stuff up from the depths of my memeory. Yeah I'm a bit stoked about it. :)

I had heard about it, and there's a Games Workshop very centric in amsterdam, I've dropped in a couple times. It looks very cool, I'll be right here waiting for this game.
(As long as I don't have to paint the models in the game.)

I'm Greynite1

I logged on to your forums today after hearing about the brand new License of Warhammer 40k. I want to say Congratulations!!
I was very wary of hearing another 40k game being annouced as unfortunately alot of 40k games have had the "Star Trek Game curse" and have enjoyed very little mainstream popularity. Now when I honestly saw that it was RELIC doing this I actually gained a lot of hope. Being an ENOURMOUS Fan of the incredible homeworld series I hope that this will be one HECK of a game. Having played through both games and Cataclysm with almost a tear in my eye at the quality of the work. I'm an AVID RTS fan as well having Loved all the Blizzard CRAFT games and Command and Conquer, Rise of Nations, All spectacular. :)

Now onto 40k. I'm a Warhammer GEEK having played the game now for over a Decade. Thats right 10yrs 12 to be precise. I have followed the game from its inception in what is known by us Vets as the ROGUE TRADER or RT Era to the current 3rd ed and the beginning of 4th ed Warhammer 40k.

For those who have never played the game Warhammer 40k is probably one of the richest story environments of any game EVER!!. To use an RTS term in the Warhammer 40k game there are no less then 50 armies or Races in the primary 40k game. Each one with its own background history and unique flavor. Now alot of these armies are sub groups of a more main type of army.

You Relic people have signed on for a heck of a property. As this license has the capability to do some very unique things if played right its Replay value could be infinite and there is an Army to fit ANY Playing style. I will break down a few of the main types of armies in the game. This is a long post I know these are just basic descriptions for those who don't know about 40k to get a feel of what the world is about. I hope the other Vet players will think I'm doing the world Justice.

Space Marines The headliners of the game. These are genetically enhanced warriors in huge suits of Power armor which are trained to an inhuman standard. Created and perfected by the Emperor himself using his own genetic material these Troops once formed the Vanguard of the Legions of the Imperium. They are stronger, Faster, Smarter and more well equipped then almost any fighting force in the Galaxy. They are the ultimate Elite strike force capable of performing any battlefield task. The Space Marines are broken up into Chapters of 1000 fighting marines and support staff. The Generic Space marine armies are capable of much but some of the more Specialized Space Marine Chapters (Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, Iron Hands) are capable of EVEN MORE!!. There is a very very good reason why they are broken up into small chapters as each chapter once was a Full legion.

The Imperial Guard The Normal Human Military might of the Imperium. This Monolithic organization are all the frontliners or humanity. The Imperial guard number in the untold 100s of Billions and are stretched all across the Galaxy. They are the most diversified military organization in the history of the galaxy. the Divisions and Regiments of the Imperial guard are humanities primary line of defense against the multitude of vicious monsters, Aliens and Daemons which threaten it from without and within.

The Eldar A Strange and ANCIENT Race of Aliens whom once ruled over the universe. They unfortunately fell victim to their own weaknesses and excesses and their empire fell with cataclysmic results that the universe is still feeling to this very day. They use incredible technology so advanced that they make things seem like magic. Their race is highly psychic as well and their people are led by the farseers whom are capable of seeing the skeins of fate. Their race is in twilight however and the Eldar struggle everyday to hang onto what they have left. They look upon other races as ignorant and disgusting savages and treat them a portion of the time. This doesn't mean they can't be beaten the sweaty human Apes have bested and fought by the side of the Eldar when the Danger is too great to ignore. They understand much in the Universe but are primarily concerned with the survival of their own race and they will use and manipulate the other races even to the point of starting great wars between them to ensure their own survival.

The Tau A brand spankin new Race of Aliens to the game of Warhammer 40k introduced with 3rd edition. They are a very young and idealistic Race who have taken their first tentative steps into a violent and uncaring universe. They believe the universe is theirs for the taking until they meet up with the other races. The Tau are highly technologically advanced compared to the Imperium and their weapons are powerful and devastating however the Tau are comparatively physically weak and shun Close combat.

The Orks Yes Orks, A Galaxy spanning Race of green barbaric creatures who have probably been in existance at least as long as the Eldar. Their culture and ideas are purely based on violence and war. Orks are brutal close combat fighters who use their seemingly crude technology to travel between the stars. They are actually a form of sentient Fungus and they breed like it too. Their spores are spread through space and when they land on a planet they become like a virus they breed at a Frightening pace and if their are enough of them and Great and Powerful Ork can unite the Tribes they create whats known in the Imperium as a WAAGHH which is basically a Crusade of War in which unbelievably massive hordes and hordes of Orks will attack a Planet and overwhelm it in a horrific Green tide of Hacking Slashing and Shooting.

CHAOS Chaos is very difficult to explain. It is basically entropy but it also has its own dimension. It is its own force and can even become sentient. It can reach out and touch and corrupt the minds of those in our universe into worshipping it. The best way to think of the Chaos Dimension is HELL. That in and off itself does not cover everything. It is a dimension of unlimited possibilities where everything we do and feel is given form. In the Game the actions of Mortals Created the forms of the CHAOS GODS. Known as Tzeentch: The Changer of Ways, Lord of Deception, Khorne: The God of War and Violence, Slannesh the God of Pleasure and Excess, Nurgle: The god of corruption, Disease and Decay. The problem is these gods reach out into our universe and affect the lives of every one. Mortals who discover these divinely powerful beings worship them and raise great armies to them and make war on the Mortal races. Most major events in the Warhammer 40k universe involve Chaos Heavily. The Creation of the God Slanneesh was a direct Result of the Downfall and excesses of the Eldar. The Chaos Gods Corrupted an entire half of the Imperiums Forces and created the War to almost end all wars known as the HORUS HERESY. This war single handedly almost destroyed the entire Galaxy. This incident gave birth to the Most feared army in the world, The Chaos Space Marines. Existing much like their loyalist "Good" brothers the Chaos Space Marines are dedicated to different Chaos Gods or even to Chaos as a whole Entity. Chapters like the World Eaters, the Death Guard, the Emperors Children and the Nightlords have put terror into the hearts of the mortals in the Galaxy for over 10,0000 years now. The Recent GW Campaign the EYE OF TERROR was the Chaos Space Marines emerging from their forced Exile in mass in the great 13th Black Crusade to try and Destroy the fortress world of Cadia and Swarm out to the rest of the galaxy. They are the Primary foes of everybody.

Necrons This is a truly ancient Race of Evil beings who even predate the Eldar. They were once living beings who in their bitterness, fear and anger over death gave their mortal bodies up to the Star Gods. Great creatures of energy who lived amoung the stars millions of years ago. (And recently do again) The Necrons became the mindless automaton legions of the Stargods once they took human form and ravaged and scoured the galaxy destroying and enslaving every living thing they came across at the behest of the Star gods. They almost extinguished all life in the galaxy till a War broke out amoungst the Race of Star gods and they almost wiped each other out to a man. The few beings who were left (4 in fact) looked over a devesated universe and were bored. They went into a Torpor to await a time when the universe had recovered and they could indulge their vile pleasures for death fear and despair aknew. Now it is the 41st millenium and the universe is teeming with Life and the Star Gods have begun to Awake and so have the Necrons.

Tyranids A Race of Bioorganic creatures which has swept in monstrous hive fleets from the Eastern Fringe of the Galaxy. This race is the ultimate answer of Evolution they are capable of matching any technological feet made so far through Bio organics. They create races of creatures for specific tasks. This race of Galactic Locusts sweeps onto a Planet in a maddening Wave of Teeth, Flesh and Talons and devours everything down to the Bed rock. Leaving nothing but a barren Rock behind. They are mindless and linked together by a massive hive mind which makes them all but fearless and almost impossible to stop short of mowing every single one of them down.

These are some of the primary Races in 40k there are a few more I'm sure others will no doubt talk about but as you can see the possibilities for Stories and different games in this world are darn near endless. I have some ideas on that too.

Just fixing the sad faces... - ion

Thanks Greynite, awesome info.

I've not looked at Warhammer 40K since... oh grade 10? 15 years or so ago? Maybe it was grade 11 or something... I can't remember.

I do remember playing warhammer (not 40K) at Trumpeter wargamers in burnaby along with some battletech with minatures.

Whoah. i just heard about the game. This is going to be awsome. I myself play Tau, and i've been in the hobby for about 4 years.

This will be great! But I really hope that Relic don't miss out on the richness of this universe, as things are complex. And I do really hope they will hit the architechture and pervertion of the Imperium of Mankind.

A 1000 point Imperial Guard army could ba a lot biger than either of those. Heck, it could be as big as both of those combined.

Lets see here, I've been playing 40k for about 8 years. I have to say there are TWO RTS companies I've ever seen a game from that I would trust to do a good job with a 40k Game.

Cavedog [now extinct]
and Relic

Relic, being the maker of my second favorite game of all time, and definately favorite RTS, I have to say I couldnt be happer. And of course also find it VERY odd as the two message boards on the entire internet I spend the most time on are the Relic Boards and the Games Workshop Boards (:

As for 6000pts... it varies. In a Chaos Space Marine army 6000 points can be as few as 60 or so models.

In an Imperial Guard army it can be 1000 models (:

My Imperial Guard army for example has 105 men, 7 tanks, and one walker in 1850pts. Multiply that out and my 6000pt army would be 340 men, 23 tanks, and 3 walkers.

Then of course there's my Traitor Army... at 1500points thats 182 models, times 4 so 728 models (:

I've never played it nor have I seen an actual WH40K model in real life... but I've browsed online for quiet some time to look into the units/races/etc... i'm quiet excited.

There is a GamesWorkshop store near my local computer store and I have seen large WH40K games going on in there. They are quite impressive. Whole realistic plastic terrains covered in massive armies of troops and AWESOME looking vehicles. I really wanna see some of those vehicles in action.

The thing that scares me though is....has relic bit off more than it can chew?!?! The possibities for this game are so numerous that it would be difficult to satisfy alot of gamers. I don't know how exactly there going to come close to pulling it off.

BUT...seeing as I do have a good amount of faith in Relic....AND THANK god sierra isn't in control....SO NOW i have way more faith that relic can possibly pull it off!

Although i've been "distracted" by Confrontation(a french fantasy tabletop) i still play Tau, and am quite familiar with the background.

greynite did a pretty good job on the basics, but i have a few additions.

Tyranids: While most of them are mindless indeed, higher ones like Hive Tyrants can be a good deal more intelligent than humans. Every single tyranid creature contributes a small piece to the massive psionic aura that is the hive mind, the hive mind's order are then focused, through node creatures (like the aforementioned hive tyrants), back to the individual creatures.

Chaos: The "Chaos Dimension" is the warp, it's kinda like hyperspace in a way, and all intersteller travel goes through it. The important thing is that it reacts to the emotions of living beings(not only those currently in the warp, but to those in our world too), those emotions, if strong enough and/or shared by many beings, can create sentient "creatures". In the beginnings the warp was a nice and calm place, but because the current galaxy is pretty unfriendly the, it's fulll of dangerous currents and storms, and the vast majority of the creatures being spawned are evil demons.

The Imperium: Officially it is still lead by the (near god) Emporer who founded it thousands of years ago, but in the final showdown against Horus, the guy who led the chaos rebellion in wich half of the space marine legions defected, he was (although victorious) fatally wounded and plced in a giant life support machine, but by now his soul has left his withering body and is perhaps waiting to be reborn, and the High Lords of Terra are the active rulers "in the name of the Emporer. The most Important thing to controll the masses is religion, the Emporer is a god, with prayers temples and all, and either you are worshipping him or you are a heretic, wich means a painful death if they find out.
And finally something about the military tactics of the Imperium: If there is a problem send in a horde of guardsmen, if they die send in some more. Repeat as necessary. Only if the problem is really persistant a small number of Space Marines is send in to beat the crap out of whatever enemy there is, and they will usually succeed. Long thing short: Guardsmen are expandable, Space Marines are rare and valuable.

Tau: The really unusual thing is that the offer everyone they meet to join their cause and empire before gunning them down, wich is quite outstading in a universe as xenophobic as 40K.

For those interested: here are two miniatures a painted, a Fire Caste Warrior, the standard Tau infantry, and a Kroot, the Tau's (somewhat savage) main ally.

SoheilsX, what kind of Titan is it? Even though I'm not too sure, a Warlord Titan isn't 10,000 pts.

Anyway, I just got into 40k a couple of months before Relic's announcement. I play Imperial Guard and have a 1000 pt army consisting of some 60 infantry, 6 heavy weapons teams a HQ squad and 2 Leman Russ Tanks (IMO the best tanks in 40K)

Anyway, Greynite1 left out some of the less common factions in the 40k universe, so here they are:

Daemonhunters Greynite1, how could you forget your own faction? In the Imperium, there exists an organization known as the Inquisition. The Inquisition is sort of like the KGB of the Imperium, the inquisitors roam from system to system dealing with problems. Anyway, the Inquisition is divided into 3 Ordos (Orders) and one of them is the Ordo Malleus (Order of the Hammer). The Ordo Malleus commit them selves to the eradication of Daemons and other warp spawned horrors hence the name Daemonhunters.
The Ordo Malleus has the power to requisition any Imperial forces without question to carryout their dangerous work. The Ordo Malleus has it's own Chamber Millitant (Armed Forces) in the form of the Grey Knights. The Grey Knights are the elite of the elite. They are more powerful than even the Space Marines. Each Grey Knight is hand selected from the most unforgiving death worlds and trained from an early age. They have been tempered to be totally fearless in the face of sights that would send even a veteran Space Marine running.
Their armour and weapons are the most advanced the Imperium is capable of making. They wear Space Marine power armour that has been specially modified to include an Aegis suit that nulifies phycic powers directed at them. They also have stormbolters built into their gauntlets and bear mighty Nemisis Force Weapons. They are all potent Phsykers in their own right and have been trained to focus their powers to acheive what is normally impossible.
The Grey Knights are Humanity's elite. Only they can face a greater Daemon and banish it to the Hell from whence it came.

Dark Eldar The Dark Eldar are a splinter group of the main Eldar race. They separated from the mainstream Eldar at the time of the Fall, the Eldar's decline. They kill for the sake of killing, inflicting pain for their own pleasure and because they can. They live as Pirates, raiding Human worlds for supplies and pain slaves. I havn't had much experiance with them or read alot so I'll stop here.

Sisters of Battle The Sisters of Battle are the Chamber Millitant of the Ecclesiarchy, the main (and only legal) religion in the Imperium. The Sisters of Battle were originally founded in the age of Apothesy by a rogue member of the High Lords of Terra. He merged the Ecclesiarchy and the High Lords into one orgainsation with him at the top. His reign was short and bloody. It was ended when one of his bodyguard (one of the Sisters of battle) Shot him.
At the end of the Age of Apothesy, the Ecclesiarchy was strictly forbiden "Men under Arms" so the Ecclesiarchy adopted the Sisters of Battle as their Chamber Millitant (Even in the 38th Millenium there are lawyers).

That's it for now.

I love the game, sometimes hate the price but I've been at it for about 4 yrs maybe 5.... way back in 2nd ed. about 4000 points of space wolves. I'm so happy that someone is making a new game, Exile Films really screwed up when they didn't finish Blood Quest. This is a blessing from the Emperor(yea, I'll say that too) I worship this game and am getting a job to buy a computer to run this game, I'd die without it. I think I'll play a battle on sunday. Been some talk about Blizzard here and there.. There is a Warhammer 40K minature board in the QA room. I say that speaks volumes about where StarCraft comes from. Granted I don't think it's worthy of a lawsuit anymore then D&D is from Tolkien. There are some amazing people at blizzard but I don't think this is their cup of tea. I also hope this will not be a Total War Game.. not to say they are not very good, but they have their time and place. I've been trying to get a Warhammer 40K mod of Ground Control going for some time, and put it on hyatous until GC2 comes out, along with a Star Wars mod for Homeworld.. Thanks Relic for taking the load off of me, but now my easy ticket to fame and glory is gone.. *sigh, laughs* But Ground Control is almost 40K already in all but name and space marine armor and where somethign like this truely belongs. I eagerly await to see what the makers of the best computer game I have ever played will come up with (Relic), ontop of the best sound track I have ever heard. Thats saying a lot considering the sheer volume of games my appitite has consumed over the years.

I've seriously played 40K for three years now. Been dawdling since 98. I'm working on a my own little codex, but then again who isn't, I guess only Citadel Journal will tell in the end. I wouldn't call myself a lover or a fanboy, as all things need moderation, but geek works for now.

hmm i need a digi camera, i love showing off my Khorne lord, Converted from Logan Grimnar. anyways im a huge 40k fan, i've been playing since 2nd ed, over 10 years, my uncle used to play rogue trader and he gave me his box and his marines. but i was wounder outter the normal chaptors what is everyones fav, i myself hate Ultramarines cos when i started playing, that what everyone painted them as, i thinks its cos they just copied the manager, who was abit of a nutt, depends if anyone is from Colchester and meet Jim. anyways id say for me its between Flesh Tearers and Space Wolves.

hmm i did have a sister of battle army till my step destroyed it, one of these days i'll fix it up, i got loads of it when they had a huge sale when they sold of all the 2nd ed stuff. But who thinks its a damn expesive hobby to play?

If you try to go from zero to 2000 points in one go, yes. I've been playing since 1990. Spread over thirteen years (and change), it's a lot more manageable, not counting the occasional multihundred-dollar spasm, like when I got my metal Thunderhawk.

I got into 40K back in High School. First picking up the minatures, then painting them, and later finding out about the game. SO a total of about 13 years of interest in 40K. In that time I have produced 3 - 2000pt armies and have 1 more on the way.
I don't think I will be stoping now, since I started really getting into modifying the minatures and adding detail. The gaming is just for extra fun, but I really like sitting down on a nice day and working on those minatures. I consider myself the Tim Allen of 40K.

i'm not sure if bumping this was a good idea, turbo, i'm worried it might get locked.

i never saw this thread when i first joined...

i have a brand-spanking new 2000pt IG drop troop army (got rid of all my old stuff), along with my 3000pt tau army.

neither is complete yet.

my best friend actually got me into it a few years ago, using his ultras and his bro's world eaters.

until i saw the tau, i never wanted an army of my own. but when they showed up, i had to have em.

Been looking over the forums and I must say that Dawn of War looks amazing. :bandit:

In your conversations, the Eldar (the best race, but getting screwed in 4th ed.) are hardly discussed. :Slap:

They are an ancient race, young at about the time of the necrons. They spanned galaxies and their culture flourished. Eldar are humanoid, but only physically. Their minds are highly in-tune to the warp, giving their seers far-sight abilities and other varying psychic powers. Mentally, they feel much more intense emotions. When their culture was at its peak, they began to fall into decadence. Progress slowed as they continued their fall as a civilization. This climaxed in a cataclysm known as the Fall. Their pursuit of pleasure stimulated the awakening of Slaanesh (see earlier posts for chaos: absorbing mortal emotions, etc.). A region of warpspace known as the Eye opened in the center of their homeworlds. Their civilization was enveloped in the apocalypse of the opening. The Eldar on the worlds were killed by the psychic reverbrations. Their "maidenworlds" became uninhabitable.
However the Eldar survived. A group of Eldar known as the Exodites fled the homeworlds to faraway planets at the beginning of the Fall and were relatively unscathed. These are not the Eldar focused on in the computer game or the tabletop nowadays.
The Craftworld Eldar fled the worlds just before the Fall. They survived on gargantuan spacecraft made of wraithbone called Craftworlds. When a Craftworld Eldar falls in combat, his soul is transferred to a waystone worn on his/her person at all times. This prevents them from being consumed by Slaanesh, translated in Eldar as She who Thirsts. Their fellows will retrieve the waystones and do 1 of 2 things: place their stone in the Infinity Circuit at the center of the craftworld; place their stone in a wraithbone body to fight for their craftworld again as mighty Wraithlords or Wraithguard. Among the most common are Ulthwe, Alaitoc, Iyanden, Saim-Hann, and Biel-Tann (apparently featured in Dawn of War). In the tabletop games, these are the only legal miniatures. This might change (here's hoping!! ). The Craftworld Eldar are the mainstay of the remaining Eldar. They fight to regain their lost prestige and spread their civilization to it's lost level.
Then there's the Harlequins. To the human eye, they could be called clowns. They dress colorfully and exotically. They are also the elite of all Eldar warriors. Their job is to protect the Black Library, a library in which is stored the secrets of the warp. If the minions of chaos reached that place, there's no telling what power they could unleash. The Harlies travel in Troupes, which are their armies. Every so often, a troupe will visit a craftworld and perform a dance. These dances are far more than the mortal sense of the word. They involve rapid flipping, color-changing costumes, psychic emanations, etc. In the dances, prominent harlequins will perform the parts of the major Eldar gods, including the Laughing God, Khaine (war), Eldanesh (a mortal hero), and Isha (the mother). Outcast harlequins known as Solitaires perform as Slaanesh.

This is a basic rundown of the Eldar fluff (background info). As you can probably tell, I'm an Eldar nut :D . I cannot wait for DoW to come out so I can show you Monkeigh (Eldar derogatory word for humans) what real power is!!!!

I never even heard of 40K til i was like 12.

I bought myself some berzerkers cus i was advised to and i came back a few months later did chaos went off chaos and did Nids now i am back to to chaos and currently building a skaven force for warhammer fantasy.

Anyway i play Iron warriors, about 4 years now cus of the easy colour scheme so i could teach myself and start to get better at painting. I am not one of these beardy players ooohhh 245215421562176122187217821897 Points daemon prince, 4 defilers, 9 oblits and 2 5 man squads. That just ruins the spirit of the game for me personally.

I take balanced armies so far ive been in 2 tournies, 1 i finished in 4th and the other i came 1st the both fielded 20 players in. At the mo i am sorting my Nids out, fex with 2 Vcs for the new rules, Hehehehe!!!

I only recently heard of Dawn of war through a friend at my local GW and put in alot of hours researching into i came on the forums, got alot of abuse of everyone but i feel as if ive kinda settled in now.

Oh yeah and at the mo i am giving me dread axed armed DP a try with daemonic speed hidden behind rhinos. in the new rules one of the missions is to kill the enemy commander. That's why ive gone for a DP. Against marines i could easily win in the first turn by dropping a Basilisk shell on his head.

Anyway i talk to much, perhaps i should of wrote this in my diary, LOL!

Cheers

I play the necrons. I have other armies but find my necrons to be my favorite. Alot of people say they are just like marines but they are so wrong....Marines are way faster and better in cc where necrons we shoot everything till it is dead. Plus we have gods who can really make the game interesting........

Cross this with Dyntheos' post and you've got my take on things.

But I've also beta tested many games in the past and am a bit of a tech g33k so I'll just say...

...it's lookin' good and is gonna be awesome.

I never even heard about WH 40K until DOW. Well, I did, but I always thought it was some mechwarrior thing. And things like Gundam don't particularly interest me. Then I happened upon this article

http://pc.ign.com/articles/525/525701p1.html

and I was like "whoah, there's orcs in this game, except they're cartoony! how interesting. But the vehicles look kick-ass. I think I'll add it to my watch list."

and the rest is history.

Ancient thread...

Anyway, I was amazed. I was always wanting a 40k RTS, and here it is, and it rocks. Just like I imagined.
