Ever had your Ork warlord get displaced off the edge of the table by his saving throw or watch in horror as an out of control ork war waggon careens through rows of imperial guardsmen just to strike your commissar?
Tell me about your memorable moments.

I've had a squad of 6 Fire Dragons take out an undamaged Monolith, despite needing 3 6's to kill the thing. I've once had a Dwarf Great Weapon Warrior Unit (Fantasy) chase down a fleeing Silver Helms regiment. I've once actually failed a Psychic test with a Farseer with Runes of Whitnessing. I've once seen a unit of Grots hold up a Blood Angel Honour Guard for 5 or so turns. Oh there's plenty of funny stuff with Warhammer. Like hitting with all your attacks against the Terminators, but totally failing to wound except with 1 attack, which incidentally happens to wound the Terminator by him failing his 2+ Armour Save.

my black templars emperor champion took out the following in a single mega battle during the third war for armageddon (we were all only allowed 250 - about... i don't quite remeber - pts of units) so i took a squad to accompany him. he killed the following:
2 - chaos librarians, or psycher things
1 - dark eldar lord
2 - ork nobz in mega armor
1 - khorne bezerker aspiring champion
3 - khorne bezerker troops (he ran out of guys to challenge :wowsers:)
needless to say he tore apart everyone else, and almost single handedly held the bunker for the imperium. I arrived late, drop podded in the middle of the board, two turns later i was in the bunker fighting off chaos and orks alone with just my squad... luckily, marinus calgar, and commander azreal showed up soon thereafter with some basic joes to help mop up... the EC totally ruled in that battle and the heroics of champion bob will not soon be forgotten... (beat em down! :smash: )

Most memorable for me was watching my 700pt titan get killed by some scarabs from the old chapter approved necron army list. I learned the hard way why a squad of infatry infront of a titan is important

Particular moments aside, we had some models that took on narratives of their own.
For instance we had a group of (i think) 1st ed. close assault guardsmen. Anyway one model only had one arm for some reason and whoever painted it (my friends older brother i believe) had made it look like he had a bloody bandaged stump. In his otherhand he had a wicked looking Ork Chainsword and this crazy look on his face. THAT MODEL NEVER EVER DIED. It was ridiculous; close assault guardsmen are chaff, they are the 40k equivilent of a peasent pitchfork charge, but that man never went down. In one game he took out my freaking Ultramarine assault squad seargent!!WTF.
In any case he became somewhat of a legend to us and inspired fear, confidence and hilarity depending on whose side he was on.

My most memorable moment has to be killing an Ultramarines Command Squad and Marneus Calgar (okay so he only had one wound left) with a Chaos Rhino and the destroyer upgrade. An incredibly lucky set of "to wound" rolls combined with an equally unlucky set of saving throw rolls saw the whole squad diced like mince meat. Classic.

I played the Space Marine / Titan Legions EPIC for many years.
Warp Missile. Great Gargant. No scatter on either room, 6 for damage. 3 fires. Endphase, 6 on the fire damage. Boom.

Displaced an Eldar Avatar off the table in the firts move of a game. Damn, the look on his face :)
Countered in a later game by the look on my face when a squad of terminators with those whats-a ma-called missile launcher things took out my entire flank of Tyranids and 'Stealers in turn one.
Still kicked his ass. The hive fleet is tough. Very Tough.

Similar to 32bits' story.
Local meeting of WH40k at leisure centre.
Friend packed all his armies (yes plural) into a singular box. He used cotton wool to protect them as packaging.
Another friend decided to test the flamability of cotton wool.
Result, a minute of mad desperation, a puddle of plastic and all of us legging it out the back door of the leisure centre to prevent telling them of the 2 foot diameter black scorch marks on the carpet.
My most memorable moment was in a game with my cousin he took out my Scorpion: Super Heavy Grav Tank (Eldar) in one shot with a Tzeentch pyschic power that acts like a lascannon. The shot was through a window from like max range. He rolled a 4 to hit and then rolled 5 consecutive 6s annhilateing all the structure points then destroying the tank. I was so appalled I quit the game. Ever since I have hesitated to use it, he still makes fun of it for getting blown so easily.:ignore:

Rolling 8 sixes from 8 to save my Wolf Lord from sustained heavy plasma fire. 2 Eldar Falcons thought it would be amusing to fire everything they had at him. Whoops, no field saves here. [Second Edition Warhammer 40k]
Wargear card - bionics [Extra save of 6 on D6 on each wound suffered to see if the damage hits his bionic part]
8 wounds. 8 saves. magic. Went on to hold that part of the board and win me the game. His bionic leg must have needed some repairs after...

My biggest moment my necron monolith and some nid. he needed for me to roll a 6 to blow my monolith up and I rolled straight 2's over 20 times and sometime around 4 15 in the morning I hit a table ledge when i rolled the dice and it turned over to a six. Wihtout using loaded dice either.

That was one thing that always made me angry about 40k
You could have the best looking army ever.
A perfect mix of troops, vehicles and heros.
A killer plan of attack and game winning strategies.
Then you'd catch a case of the devil dice and everything would fall apart...
Lady Luck is a cruel, harsh mistress. but like all women she's great while you're on top for a ride but a terrible b*tch when she drops you like a bad habit....

I've been playing a lot of City Fight lately, and I find the mission selection can sometimes screw you as bad as bad dice.
In a recent match, my 47 model Death Guard army had to kick 100+ sisters out of the Basilica. *Phew* We were playing random game length, starting at turn 6, and it took me 9 turns to kick them all out, slaughtered them to a sister!
It was great fun, but there are times I curse having such a small army.

Go guard, 1500 points, 135 models on the table.
My favorite moment was the setup between myself and the local gamestore owner. We threw a force group of marines at each other. Pretty much a company on each side of the battlefield.
Just seeing 2 5x6 tables together, packed with 14000 points of roudy marines chanting litanies at each other rocked. Tied that game after a long hard fight of cleanse.
Kick butt, take names if you can find one in the melted fragments.
Anything dead would have been deader if you used a lascannon.

hmmm the games I usually play last usually from 5 - 8 hours
The day Chaplain Matteus of the Dark Angels 6th Co took on an entire Khornate command squad and dreadnaught wielding only a pair of lightning claws.
Making 4+ armor and invuln saves like a madman, he tore the entire khorne command squad asunder and finally succumbed to a blow from the dreadnaught.
One fearless terminator chappy versus 10 berzerk chaos worshippers and a dreadnaught.
I had to rebuild the model because his terminator armor hasn't made a save for him since and now he walks around maiming people with his bionic powerfist and artificer armor. ;)

What? 3rd edition termie armor making saves? That's something new, mine usually get dropped by guard and their combat flashlights... err lasrifles.
Seems odd to think people find termies worth it.
Btw, most notorious moment. Watching the new *let's give chaos everything* codex daemon prince walk through three rounds from the entire firepower of about 1200 points of imperial guard and only take one wound before getting into close combat.
Ever notice they seem to be in a race to trump each other on raw amount of bs they throw into each codex. (oh yeah, well my guys'll have all your powers and this this this this this and this, oh and indirect fire battle cannons tee hee)
My *favorite* are the assassins with the "C'tan weapons".... ok now I know they are kickass assassins but where did they get a GOD's power glaive that slices through everything? I ask you! I guess this was right before the Nemesis Force Weapons were officially introduced but after the Necron Codex had been released so they went with what they had... but still that one annoys me - but in semantics alone, I completely concede that the assassin should be allowed a weapon of that function, just not one that used to belong to a god.
heh, small rant *phew* thanks!

one Moment to remember for me is the time me, my friend and my brother plays I.G. vs Chaos. Me and my friend have the guards and my brother have the chaos, my friend had controll over a guard squad 10 guardmens and one of them is equiped with a flamer and they have crak granades. the first turns went on wery well i killed the chaos lord with my commissars and senior offisers and then i see the spider or the defiler my friend walks out from cover and starts to run rigth for it (the 4 turn not so many living chaos wariors) when he get to it my brother ask how much S the granades have i said 8. and then the battle book comes up and i reads "the crack granade have 6S.....f*" my friends troops stand now in the claws of a defiler and trying to dodge the massive claws with not so good sucsess one sergant and the flamer stands there after some turns when my Demolicher turns upp from behind a building and shoot hits and blows away the tank..... and my friends guards. he was not so happy after the match... not my brother eigther... so the next match are my friend using my eldars and my brother chaos in the middle dies my 3 commissars :( Avatar and a chaos lord(270pts) with chosens killed them.. then my converted crew member "Crazy Ivan" turns up He looks realy crazy so i say "He gona kill you all..." and something like that did he do but the chaos lord did survive with 1 wound... my brother won...

When my Lord Inquisitor killed first a Great Demon of Khorne and in follow a demonprince of Khorne (both in close combat), without him or his retinue losing on single LP. In the same game, my 5 Grey Knight Terminators slayed at least 15 bloodletter (most of them in close combat) while losing only two of themselves.
Obviously, this was the last first and last time my opponent used demons in his army while I had demonhunters...
Yeah, funny how Daemonhunters are exceptionally skilled at killing daemons!
Very, very strange!

Yeah, funny how Daemonhunters are exceptionally skilled at killing daemons!
First:
The same chaos player had slayed my Dark Angels again and again with his demons and World Eaters( stupid rhino rush), so I really enjoyed slaying his army in cloce combat( After that, I think Khorne wasn't very proud of him).
Second:
He didn't want to believe that mortal humans could be such mighty.
Third:
He asked for it.:D
My most memorable 40k moment was playing a 1500 pt game. In the first shot of the game with my battery of D-cannons they scattered onto my enemies Land Radier full of teminators (which disappeared with payload and all after a quick 6 on the Ordnance table) and one of the additional blasts hit his predator which also destroyed that. He immediately conceded. He's been a good sport about it since.
Ok I have 2:
the first one is when I was playing 2nd edition 40k against some friends. I dont remimber exactly how it happened, but after pouring fire with grots and boys etc into a space marine predator I managed to cause it to hurtle out of control into, and kill an entire marine squad. Needless to say I promoted the model who made THAT shot into my dreadnaught for the next battle. :)
The Second was when a Friend of mine with a Large Ulthwae army just bought and painted his £100 or so Scorpion. And My Dark Eldar Splashed It in one turn of heavy fire :)

He makes all 11 armor saves with straight sixs...

his phase of assault fails misserabley
now his turn comes along
kills hive tyrant
2 wounsd to a carnifex obilterared a sqaud of gaunts
now assault
i kill all his guys but 2
his kills like 5 of mine...
my turn imbolization of some random vehicles with venom cannon
my assault comes i wipe out the sqaud of mariens and decide to
go after the next sqaud
im not even one inch away from entering close combat.....
his turn the sqaud obilterates that sqaud with rapid fire
after some blah blah blah
i lose.....
but another great thing in that tournament my carnifex earned the title monolith hunter
first game of the tournament my 4th real game ever
i say hey man this is my 4th game and this little kid is like well ive played over 216 games....
he has 2 monoliths i kill both of them one tunr after another with my carnifex we tie...
18 kroot instead of staying back and popping off my hormagaunt squad decided to charge through the woods and assault.
End score: Hive Mind: 18, Greater good:2
and then Old One Eye moved into his allies' Land Raider Crusader, ripped off the pintle heavy bolter, broke the treads, and threw it in the air.

they had an ally, a space marine ally non the less.
Well *rolls eyes* this guy was a vet, or called himself one.
Also where I live there are only around a dozen or so players so
I take the oppourtunitie (sp) to play when I can get it. Of course
in the match after that when I played him he learned a few new
things and wailed on me at a distance with Broadsides and Tau
Standards.
He just never fought Nids before and he was applying tactics he
used before and succeded in using them against other armies.
They just were bad tactics against Nids. Also I was really lucky
cause of his god awful rolls.

I have had a few, the best though were:
Any number of emperor's champion rampages through enemy troops, he quite a fun unit, bit unballenced imo tho.
Tank shocking a full squad of necrons with a very broken rhino (no weapons leaft, squad dead), they failed thier moral save and never managed to damage the rhino, I ran 'em off the board.

hello all, this is my first post.. :D
memorable moment... When my oponent tryed to assault in close combat my eldar Viper at full speed (crossing the board) with a lictor. Is funny look to a tyranid trying to reach a grav shuttle passing 10 meters over his head like a lightning.
Next turn I charged with a hwoling wraith squad over the lictor and the viper continue its route away without any arm
battle results: 24 - 1 victory for eldar player (me)
they only take out one guardian squad, hehe..

26th Jan 04, 7:25 PM
My greatest moment:
My friends and I were playing a huge four player 10,000 point game (it took three days to finish) in his two car garage. I had a 9,465 point Eldar army up against Space Wolves, Orks, and Tyranids. This was right after v.3 came out (I am using current weapon names to avoid confusion), so no specific codexes were available, just the generic 40k big book.
My army included two Scorpions, a Revenant, and the rarest of all, a Phantom. The Orks had a Great Gargant, three Gargants and five Stompahs. The 'Nid player had a Heirodule and two Hierophants, with a few Exocrines. The Space Puppies ran three Warhounds and sported a Reaver. (we obviously must have been Armorcast's only source of revenue, so once we stopped buying, that's when they must have went under =p)
Needless to say, My Iyanden Army took nearly 35 minutes just to move everything, must less fire. (Ever roll 65 dice at once?)
Well, the game was complete carnage. After about four turns, only the War Engines and a few well dug in units remained of all our armies. My Revenant went down under a hail of bio weapons from the 'Nid titans, but only after taking out three Stompahs and a Gargant. My Scorpions did not do so well, the holofields ineffective against the Reaver's Volcano Cannon, and failing to make a single kill.
But, my elegant but massive Phantom dominated. The Heat lance itself destroyed all of the Warhounds, a Hierophant, and the Hierodule. On the next turn, taking two hits that from the stubborn Reaver that disabled its Heavy Pulsar, my Phantom assaulted the remaining 'Nid Exocrines, wiping them out. The remaining Ork Engines finally took out the Reaver, and scored a lucky hit disabling my holofields.
On the final round, it was my Phantom against two Gargants and the Great Gargant, not very good odds. The Heat Lance dispatched the Great Gargant using both shots, and the Heavy Bright Lance took out one Gargant. The last Ork Engine failed to score any hits. My opponent offered a draw, myself, smelling victory, declined. Of course, my Heat Lance and Bright Lances shredded the Gargant, incurring no less than four critical hits in one volley. (Vaul bless the spirit stones):bow2:
My worst moment:
Watching one of my Iyanden Wraithguard squads kill all but one Space Marine in a Devastator squad with their Wraithcannons, only to lose in close combat to the single Marine hauling a Lascannon.:disgust:

mine is using the 2 marines left from a pack i had to go through 2 firewarrior squads and take one of the 4 objectives therefore giving me 1/2 of the objectives and a special ability using the scenario where the machine would bombard his forces and on a 4-6 they would take a hit, roll 2d6 i think it was for how many got hit and then 4s to wound i think depending on toughness and strength etc. it was good that day i relised how worthless hand to hand is for tau.

Watching my Chaplain and 5 Death Company marines annihilate around 1200 pts. worth of Imperial Guard in three rounds.
This was a veteran IG player but had never taken on the Blood Angles and propably mistook them for Red Templars...
He practically poured everything he had on my Predators (which were in cover) while ignoring the small black assault squad jumping behind the bushes against his left flank. I also sent a razorback against his right flank (which, being a tank of sorts) also took a lot of his attention (and fire... and eventualy met it's maker).
Needless to say, once my DC managed to assault his leftmost squad they simply rolled over everything the IG could throw at them, routing everybody they didn't kill (with the help of the Chaplains Death Mask) and the Chaplain taking out two Leman Russ' with his meltabombs.
Needless to say, massacre for my Angles.

Epic game :)
My favorite moment was playing against someone who had never faced a squat army before... this was back when the emperor titan was brand spanking new, there one mistake was thinking that I couldn’t penetrate 12 layers of void shields come on. I had 2 Colossus, and one Cyclops facing it muhhahaha.... a total of 22 battle cannons later, including the gyro copters and a few support weapon for good measure, and my Cyclops would have it's 1 and only chance for glory, as you can imagine the tension for me pivoted on that one crucial dice role.
1d6, 2+ to hit…. a hit, the plasma annihilator with it’s 4+ on 2d6 save add 6 to that dice role (man I loved that cannon) save on 10+ to survive… a 9 was rolled automatic 6 on the damage table  weapon gone plasma leakage everywhere Emperor titan carnage I've never seen anyone look so gob smacked... they never underestimated a squat heavy tank again.
On the other hand I've never hated playing orcs more, damn those mini garguant thingys with the ball gun 1 of those gets in range and bang make a save 5+ 1d6 :( or die... no hit locations means, I'm still just a glorified tank with a shield.

I just finished a Night Fight 40K game, my Deathguard vs. Necrons... it went something like this:
It was a dark and stormy night. The rain was coming down in sheets. The Deathguard were just worrying about the possibility that the rain would wash away their maggots, when out of the gloom a line of Destroyers appeared. "WTF?" they all said as a shot pinged off the front of a pred. "Well screw you too!" They shouted as a volley of fire vaporized the 4 floating creatures.
"That's not the end of it, mate!" Said another as a swarm of scarabs flew in out of the dark.
"Sh*t-sh*t, f*cking sh*t!" They shouted as the creepy little buggers started chewing on the defiler.
Then a shiny beacon of light emerged, rain sizzling as it contacted its metal skin.
"Oh Great-Gurgling-Nurgle! It's a C'tan!!"
"Where the hell's our God?"
"Festering in a lake of vomit and piss, where else?"
"Looks like we're on our own!"
And so the great Deciever proceeded to ginsu its way through the marines. As the rest of the Necrons flitted in and out of view at the periphery of the battle.
"Crap, the rhinos busted!"
"So's the pred"
"Dammit, they're shooting us to pieces"
"F*ck it! Let's take it too them"
As the defiler lost its top releasing the inner daemon in a bale of warpfire, the remaining Deathguard pushed out in opposite directions towards the destroyers and the host of warriors cowering in a building out of the rain.
"That's more like it! Stuff we can kill!"
And the marines were happy! Sure the C'tan was ravaging their numbers and beating them like a redheaded stepchildren, sure they couldn't infect these metal wieners with their plagues... but their rainy day was no longer boring!
The End :)
--------------------------------
In the end I won by holding 1 table quarter and contest the opposite. with a squad that his necrons couldn't kill.
There were 2 moments that really made the difference; 1) tying up his C'tan that fled from CC with a roll of 5 with my 3in consoladating plaguebearers, and 2) chasing away 1 squad of necrons and managing to consoladate 3in into the next so they couldn't rapid fire my butt in the 6th turn.
Great game!

Its a warhammer game, Dark elves vs Savage Orcs. The dark Elves won the game on turn 3 with ZERO casualties and ZERO savage orc units on the table! First turn 2 huge bolts slammed into the giant dropping it dead, crossbowmen with a sorceress making a unit of 25 savage orc boyz flee off the table and a Cold One knight Regiement that flank charged another unit of boyz and ended up wiping out almost the rest of the army.... All done with no elf casualties :).
Another one was with Empire vs Dark Elves where Empire won on 2nd turn. Pistoliers charged the flank of repeater crossbowmen, and the elf player chose to flee, which in his 2nd turn made the sorceress flee and the cold ones flee and the corsairs flee (all fled off the table) and on the other flank the rest of the army fled because one corsair unit ran from a mortar round :)!
The FUNNIEST moment would have to be the time a single dire wolf chased down 19 savage orc boyz and killed them all!

I with my 1500 point guard army, 6 squads of infantry, command HQ, lascannon squad, 2 basilisks and a demolisher against 3 chaos players each taking around 500 points (some quite a bit over).
Massed lasgun fire annihilated the deamon prince closing in on the neatly ranked lines and all other assault troops didn't get within 12" of my army (rapid fire + sharpshooters). By the end, i had lost both basilisks to the 6 obliterators and the demolisher was immobile with its 3 heavy bolters stuck forward and a whopping 10 guardsmen were dead.
It was a glorious day for the Cadian 222nd
It earned them their place fighting alongside Inquisitor Lord Marleheim attempting to destabilise the chaos grip in the Cadian systems (my background story for my Conflict edinburgh force)

Gather round children and listen to my tale
Its one of war, death, sacrifice and woe...And an Eldar warlock named Ted.
Now, during the time Ted was in the eldar army, i was playing under 2nd edition rules, from these rules, we had basically figured that:
1) the warlock could actually get 2 witchblades
2) the warlock could get from the eldar wargear a 3+ unmodifiable teleporting shield
3) one of the psychic powers he could get would be psychic shield, providing him with a 4+ save.
So...to review, we have 1 elite warlock, with 3 saves (shield, psychic shield AND rune armour) and 2 witchblades (a better balance would've been 1 WB and 1 shuriken pistol, but we liked the effect)
Now, we had no idea how well this would work out until we actually used him in combat. On our side were an assortment of eldar troops led by Ted, on the other side, 50+ imperial guardsman in one long line with heavy support behind them aiming at the few card walls that were included with the boxed game....ALL on overwatch.
The game progressed as such:
1) IG goes first. the falcon grav tank and a nearby vyper are instantly brought down by the las cannons that the IG had behind their lines. Shortly afterwards, 2 banshee squads of 5 each, 1 5 scorpion-strong squad and 12 guardians + 2gunners are killed by the shelling of 2 basilisks.
2) second guardians try to leave cover to get a shot at the IG and are promtly torn apart by the sheer number of IG on overwatch. The same happens with a squad of dire avengers, things are looking extremely grim, even a squad of swooping hawks fails miserably to do damage as their grenades miss.
3) another artillary bombardment, this time the warp spiders which had failed to move were hit, reducing them substantially, and the swooping hawks (although agile) are rendered apart by the sheer volume of weapons bieng used against them.
4) with only a squad of 5 scorpions and Ted remaining, the decision to make a suicidal charge into the front lines is made. With overwatch the scorpions are quickly dispatched, HOWEVER, the 3 saves AND toughness saves of Ted keep him clear of harms way and he is actually teleported INTO the enemy lines. What happened next was what i could only describe as 'inspired fighting' as Ted slowly but surely plowed through the long line of IG soldiers in HtH reciving nil wounds, using his witchblade(s) to great effect. What was most useful about this was the fact that each hit had to go through the long process of toughness->shield->shield-> rune armour and although he got wounded once by a comissar, he still had plenty of fight left in him as was made clear when he went on through lines, eventually meeting the leader of the IG (Comissioner Yarric i think was his name) and taking his clawed hand as a trophy.
5) with his entire front line routed, his heavy weapons uncrewed and what vehicles he had in direct danger of bieng attacked by the berserk warlock, the IG leader decides its time to retreat.
Ever since this battle, the teleporting shield has been banned, Warlocks can only be regular, and the witchblade was significantly toned down.
Still, for when it lasted, it was fun, i remember how we were talking about what the situation would've looked like from a soldiers point of view and all we can think of is Sauron from the LOTR:FOTR film except much smaller. with a glowing sword and the poor IG holding lasguns instead of swords.

I have a few memorable gaming moments.
1) the time my space marine whirlwind killed (or banished) a lord of change (greater daemon of tzeench).
2) The time I killed my own super beardy space marine commander (who had master crafted lightning claws) with my own vindicater - I rolled a 6 for scatter in his direction
3) The time my 10 chaos mutants killed abaddon (Warlord of all Chaos) by pilling on him.
4) Having my entire 1,500 points Dark angels army killed by an Ultramarine command squad with 4 guys with powerfists - But in the end I killed their damned techmarine who had previously been killed but had bionics and had rolled a 6 to get back up, he met his end when he punched my whirlwind and it blew up in his face and killed him. (Yes!!!)

This thread reminds me, does anyone know where i could get resources on 2nd edition rules? ever since they've released the 3rd edition, the 2nd edition rules have completely vanished in all shape and form....i miss save modifiers :( .

I have 2nd edition rules.......
I remember when one grey knight brother captain obliterated 20 ork boys in one turn (holocast, multiple attacks, sweeping advance)

It's been so long I can't remember but in 2nd ed did shields work in close combat, or did we just used to ignore them?
I think I we decided that they shouldn't work in close quarters
especially displacer fields good if you got em bad if you don't

yes well, i hated all the old shields part for conversion fields, however i think the most boring things were characters in termie armour with displacer fields, i do think there were alot of problems with 2nd ed, a there are with 3rd ed, maybe 4th ed will get it right

2nd edition rules make the game last longer, in a good way and bad way. On one hand, troops are more resiliant in the 2nd ed rules and really, the save modifier is a lot more realistic than the very simplistic AP value. A EDIT: bolter (not heavy bolter) is gonna have a better chance in penetrating a space marines armour than an autogun, this is represented by the fact that the space marine's save is changed from 3+ to 5+ indicating this fact. On the other hand, these rules (when you used all the 2nd ed rules) made the game drag out for a really, really long time, meaning most people got sick of it after a few hours.
The only reason i ask is that certain people i know flatly refuse to play with any rules but the 2nd ed ones and, well, games workshop seems to have completely purged their memory of the 2nd edition rules as i cant even find a mention of it ANYWHERE.

i agree - my first impression of the 3rd edition rules was definatly that they seemed 'dumbed down'
great thread too - you guys have managed to get me interested in warhammer all over again - going to have to dig out my army :p
btw, there are afew full sets of 2nd ed rules on ebay atm.

Most memorable moment in 40K came from 2nd Ed, back when vehicles were "dangerous" and not "bunkers", like the are now.
The Basilisk, back in the day, could fire twice every turn. You had to fire at the same target, but you would always get two shots off.
Anyway, I checked LOS and all I could see was a single solitary Assault Marine on the other side of the board. "Why not?" I thought, and pounted away with him.
First shot hit, second shot missed.
First Shot:
Hits and kills the Assault Marine, plus the 4 guys standing around with him. Also clips the track of the Land Raider next to him. I roll penetration - penetrates the track. Roll track damage, 6, tank flips over, landing on and killing a Marine with a Missile Launcher.
Second Shot:
Scatters into a Land Speeder. Land Speeder goes out of control and hits the Dreadnought. The Dreadnought explodes, the explosions hitting the other Land Speeder. It goes out of control and crashes into the Techmarine, who fails his 2+ Power Field save.
So, the first shot of the first turn yeilded the following death toll:
5 Assault Marines
1 Tactical Marine w/Launcher
1 Land Raider
1 Techmarine
1 Dreadnought
2 Land Speeders
The game was pretty easy after that.
How I miss 2nd Ed...

hmm, i really wouldnt mind a game of 2nd ed rules, i just hated the wargear and stuff, i do like how that changed in 40k
Not too long ago...right after Tau came out, and I still played Eldar..
First turn, after my friend moved a devilfish, shot up the center with a waveserpent, diembarked, fired, blew it up. All the pathfinders died too, it was pretty cool.

Warpspiders vs low armour units like Orks and Imperial Guard in 2nd edition were completely brutal. I had to stop taking them because people would forfeit around turn 4.

My devilfish being charged by meltabomb-toting stormtroopers, catastrophically exploding and taking seven of the little buggers with it. This is also the game where the hammerhead killed a leman russ, my broadsides killed a basilisk and my pathfinders killed a chimera with an armored fist squad inside, all on the first turn.

This is the type of unpredictable (but exciting!) things that the 40k tabletop permits. I really hope Relic will be able to port at least some of this to DoW

Most memorable thing i ever saw was Kharn the Betrayer taking on a mob of of about 35 gretchin. Now everyones money was on Kharn, hell mine was. The guy rolling however ,with a cocky smile, decided to roll 1's and only ones.....
His armour saved him for the first 5 Grots, then to his horror Kharn was promptly killed, munched and laughed at by a bunch of grots.
Funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
Most memorable I remember from a game I played, rather than watched. I had my Command group including Fabius Bile in a Rhino. I thought I'd placed it and the jump pack assault troops in support, in complete cover. As it turned out, I hadn't. Step in Eldar Dreadnaught (this was 2nd Ed again) with las-cannon. ZZZAAAPPP-BOOM! the Rhino fliped over killing everyone one board, landed on top of the jump parkers, killed all but one, he fled.... 1 shot took out about 700pts of command section and 300 point close assault squad. In a 1500pt game, that really hurts =[

The die god HATES me. And I do mean hates me. I'm playing fantasy WH High Elves, obviously some of the best archers in the game. He's playing a super-ghetto lizman army. I'm talking about he was using PLASTIC BARNEYS for some of his Kroxigor's for god's sake! One of his salamanders was a plastic dinosaur model he put on the base...
I actually had to fight him twice in a row, as we were playing a campaign and he "happens" to choose right next to my starting spot on the over map. So first game, it's a 2000 point battle and I tell him I'm going to use the High Elf Character Teclis. This is under the current set of rules, but everyone watching was used to the old rules. So he tells me I have to ask him "ahead of time" if I can use characters. So I'm like, "Okay, can I use him?" He says no. D*ck. At the time I'm a new player and trying to make an army on a budget, so I take a lot of high cost stuff to try to fluff it out and Teclis helped a lot. Well losing him, I made him as high a point elf mage as I can but I still end up with about 400 points short of stuff. So of course he makes mince meat out of my high elves. Do you know how sad it is to see Silver Helms being slaughtered and then running away from Barneys?? Well I check the rules between weeks. You don't have to ask for characters using the current guides. I was soo mad.
The next week, we end up having to fight again. He shows up with his stupid ghetto barney army. I have revised my army and have a lot more archery now. During the course of the game I probably lay down about 6-7 full volleys and kill... 5 skinks. This is coming from High Elf Bowmen and their bolter. My High Elves apparently decided to get drunk during battle. I say it rained and their bows were warped. :^P
Another time playing 2E 40K (the only type I have played), I had a full squad of 5 termies get shot down by two groups of eldar with shuriken guns. I think he rolled about 20 dice, so of course he shreded my guys.
The only time the die god has been in my favor was when I brought Mephiston forward and used a well-placed forked lightning to take out the max number of nid. I think I took out 6 of them, then my marines waited for the nids to come across the board and took them all out in a hail of bolter fire. Glory to the Emperor!
Of course I also learned about karma in a match against that same person, we both mainly played BA, so we were playing against each other for the hell of it. I had Mephiston poised to take out a squad with the void spell. Only problem was they weren't quite in LOS. Well while my friend is looking away, I *nudge* him and what do you know, they're in line of sight! :^D So I fire away with the void spell... and through spectacular bad dice rolls, it ends up eating Mephiston. Karma is a b*tch, and I learned my lesson the hard way. :^(

One Salamander assault marine running down 12 Kroot and 5 Pathfinders. I just had to change my veteran sergeant to represent a change of leadership for the squad.
