I cannot fathom why multiplayer gaming has gotten so difficult.

I get why most console games don't have dedicated servers (it'd have to be hosted on someone else's machine and it costs money and most games lose nearly all of their playerbase after like two months) but for the love of God is matchmaking really the best anyone can do?

The good games have had party systems and join friends games for ages. I've also seen at least one browser.

My point was that it mostly revolves around matchmaking which is shitty and not as fun as just server play especially since it nearly always dumps you back to the main menu right afterward. Only have a few (or no) friends who play a certain game? Tough shit, roll the dice and hope that it's the gametype with the settings on the level you want. You can't even make a game yourself, because in general only friends ever do because no one's aware you did outside of player match, which has problems all its own, not the least being little population because everybody flocks to ranked for achievements and leaderboards.

Well yes, but that's part of the console but not the game.

I don't know, I found Halo 3 online pretty addicting, owing in large part to the matchmaking system.

With servers you have to dick around in crashing, unstable servers running on old pentium 4's with shitty pings and assholes for admins. And "cool" mods that are just really shit and usually break the game too in some manner, none of which is very conducieve to having any fun at all.

Matchmaking has consistently been the worst part of Halo for me, because I never, ever fail to get paired with terrible, obnoxious players, with only a few shining gems in the crap pile, and in general don't get what I actually want to play (and when I vote for another chance, I typically get something worse).

And player match always ended up being infection which I've hated since Halo 2 but that's no fault of the game.

You get terrible obnoxious players on servers too. That has nothing to do with matchmaking.

That's true, I suppose, though the point was that happened more in the Halo series than anything else I've played.

This isn't, unless you go out of your way to search for the moddeds hit with high pings in the server list.

In my experience you don't have to go out of your way at all. 80% of hits will have one or more of the above. Finding a good server is a chore, and favoriting is useless most of the time since they either dissapear, pings go really bad, you never see it populated again or something else. Like how Source games seem to like deleting my favorites.
Maybe I'm biased since my primary experiences have been with UT2k4 and HL2DM, which might be completely shit in thise regard compared to the average.
And as I said, I've seen at least one browser on consoles. So matchmaking isn't the only option, but IMHO it's the best for that environment. Though I'll give you that not being able to specifically request a map or gamemode in Halo is a bit annoying. The system doesn't seem to dispell the usual gravitation towards a map or gamemode(de_dust anyone?) But instead create it. :-\

Anyway, wasn't the issue whether or not you could play together with specific people? Does it matter if it's the console or the game that allows you to do it as long as you can?

I think this is a Steam issue actually because with the sole exceptions of the dolt server for TF2 and some other one every single one has vanished from my favorites too. Out of curiosity which game has the browser?

And it started off me complaining about that but then moved to me complaining about finding games in multiplayer on consoles in general. :p

I can't remember, I just know I saw it. Maybe it was one of the Far Cry's, or perhaps Vegas. Or something else, can't remember. All I remember is browser, on TV, coming out of xbox.
